Remembering its Memorial Day We who are blessed to live here in South County know this weekend is the “official” beginning of summer. The beaches open, Brickley’s, Nanna’s and many seasonal shops are vibrant. We also start the season of hospitality in our homes, restaurants, pews and churches (remember to share your pews with a smile!). We would be remiss if we didn’t really enter into the depth and meaning of Memorial Day. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to our soldiers who have fought and died in the history of our nation. I call to mind the ultimate service and sacrifice of Lt. Corporal Eric Valdepenas who gave his life in Iraq and our own Gold Star Family of Michael Simpson. We live in somewhat unstable times with an air of uncertainty in the Middle East and ever increasing threats to true religious freedom here in our own country. As Catholics, we see with sadness the attacks on places of worship in Sri Lanka, France and even in our own United States. The Catholic Mass is called a memorial. We understand it to mean that in the Eucharist the real presence of Jesus Christ, comes to us from eternity so it is not just a symbol or a re-enactment but an encounter. This Memorial Day is an opportunity to pray for the souls of our deceased veterans. We also pray for all those who have served in our armed forces and for all families who sacrifice in secret in their own hearts and minds. May God bless our military not only this weekend but throughout this year. We owe you gratitude, respect and our prayers. Here at St. Thomas More you have them. God bless America!

Piano Player Needed The St. Veronica Music Ministry is in need of one or two more pianist/accompanists for Masses at St. Veronica's Chapel. We would like to have enough people so that pianists would only need to commit to playing twice a month. We already have 4 pianists for the 3 Masses each weekend, so have flexibility with scheduling. The music ministry is a fun and rewarding ministry to be involved in, and is a great way to use the talents that God has given you, and become more connected to your parish family in a meaningful way. Please call Steve Lydon for more information at 742-8708.

Crowning of Mary Last Sunday at the 9AM Mass at St. Veronica Chapel, some of our First Communion students participated in the traditional May Crowning of Mary.

Food Collection Next weekend, we will have our monthly Food Collection. Please donate any non-perishable food items: gravy, cranberry juice, canned hams, boxed potatoes, rice, cans of juice, juice boxes, cereal,

cookies, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, coffee, pasta, pasta sauce, baked beans, soups, canned fruit, canned meats/tuna fish, personal hygiene products, diapers, dish & laundry detergents and gift certificates. Please deposit items in the bins at the Church entrances. Non-perishable food items may be left at the Church entrances at any time during the month.

Men’s Bible Study Our parish has a very active group of men, who for more than 16 years, have met each Saturday at 7:30AM in a "round table" format to discuss the Sunday scripture readings. It is very informal and attended by some scholarly and not-so-scholarly folks. It’s rewarding and even some fun. Bring your coffee and come on over to St. Thomas More parish hall!

The Gift of Peace

“There arose no little dissension and debate.”· Did that happen at work this week? Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on politics, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a little “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no little dissension and debate?” That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Christian ancestors, disrupting the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beautifully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolution. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity”, often encouraged by Pope Francis and even en-visioned in today’s Revelation passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gos-pel gift: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”·
