QUESTION OF THE WEEK Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: How do you experience God’s blessing in difficult times, when you are sad, hungry, or when friends reject you? Question for Youth: How does trusting in God make a dif-ference in your life? Question for Adults: In today’s Gospel, we are reminded that we will be either blessed or have woe done unto us. It’s a challenging teaching! Which half of this Gospel reading applies to you?

BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of to-day’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short re-minders about the characteristics that one will find in a fol-lower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as de-scribed by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beati-tude!

Sacrament of Matrimony Group Weddings at St. Linus If you are currently in a civil marriage, but were not mar-ried in the Catholic Church, you can receive the Sacra-ment of Matrimony (marriage convalidation). St. Linus invites couples into the life of the Church and continue to bless them on their journey by celebrating regularized unions with group weddings (recognizing nu-merous convalidations in one celebration), which can also lessen the financial burden for couples. Group Weddings will take place on November 16, 2019 at 10:00 AM. The fee is $200.00. This will be a bilingual mass. A wedding reception will take place in the Parish Center Patio, following the cere-mony. The celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage can be a truly enriching and wonderful experience. If you wish to begin the preparation and participate in the Group Weddings, you must register on or before the deadline of August 15, 2019. If you have further questions, please contact: Deacon Chuck and Marge Baker at (562) 921-6649

Last weekend, Archbishop Gomez invited all Catholics to make their an-nual commitment to the 2019 Together in Mission Appeal. This year, St. Linus has been asked to raise $65,800, our 2019 PARISH GOAL. If you and your family have

not had the opportunity to make your pledge, I ask that you complete a pledge card found in the pews, or make your pledge online by visiting the Together in Mission Website (found on the St. Linus website). Your gifts to Together in Mission ensure that every Catholic living in the Archdiocese has a parish to celebrate their faith and access to a Catholic school education. You are living your faith through your actions when you support To-gether in Mission.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN

DID YOU KNOW? Know when words are warning signs future Some predators will use comments and conversations to groom potential victims. Be on guard any time an adult is talking to a child about sex, no mat-

ter how they’re presenting it (hygiene, reproduction, etc.). Physical flattery can be another red flag — predators some-times try to make children feel good about themselves by com-menting on their physical appearance. Many lives depend on us advocating for them! Attn: Spiritual Parents/Brothers & Sisters!!

Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pray daily for your spiritually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happiness with him/her. 6 Months Your spiritually adopted baby is growing quite beautifully now. Their weight is approaching 2 pounds. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good chance of sur-viving. The medical advances in caring for extremely small newborn infants are extraordinary indeed! Each passing year, we witness medical advances that allow our medical professionals to save younger and younger pre-mature infants.
