Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 12th, 2017

PARISH NEWS My dear parishioners and friends, I find Pope Francis to be such an inspiration.......I have used his words, found in two little books (“365 Daily Meditations With Pope Francis” published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and “A Year With Pope Francis” published by Paulist Press....every day as part of my meditation...I’d love your thoughts on these reflections “If one has the answers to all the questions----that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble.”

and then, “Let's open our eyes, the slave is not one who is chained, but the one who does not think, nor has convictions. You are a citizen. not by the mere act of voting, but by your vocation and commitment to build a nation of solidarity.” after a discussion about education here in the parish, I was amazed to open my little book and read: “There is nothing worse than a Christian educational institution conceived from uniformity and standard expected behavior.... Our goal is not only to form “individuals useful to society,” but also to educate people Who can transform it! This cannot be achieved by sacrificing the skills that lead to maturity, the deepening of knowledge, diversification of taste because, finally, to neglect those results will produce not “new men and women” but lifeless puppets of a consumerist society.” And now to much more mundane, but important things: While the snow on Thursday delayed things.....the scaffolding continues to rise around the whole of the church. Let us pray every day for the safety of those working on Restoring our Home. At this time again I would like to say thank you to all who contributed to the capital campaign. l goal of $4 million

hopefully you might push us over. Just to keep you up-to-date on what is happening, we've engaged a new exterminating company they'll be spraying once a month in the church. They use a very green product that leaves a bit of a minty smell. The church itself will be serviced usually on the last Thursday of the month. Please pray for peace Father Duffell CHURCH CAMPAIGN AND REPAIR UPDATE

February 2017

We are very happy to announce that the exterior repair work has finally begun with the scaffolding rising along the church façade. This extensive project includes work on the building’s roof, façade, and side elevations, and will take about 400 days to complete. We have already received the first Invoice from the contractor, totaling $450,000, for the "general conditions" including a significant portion of scaffolding start-up costs. Thankfully, so many have come forward to help in this great effort. As of January 31, 2017 the parish, through 318 gifts, has raised $3,877,586 of its $4,000,000 goal to cover the cost of this necessary work. Not everyone can give equally, but each has given sacrificially. We continue to reach out to those families that, during Commitment Weekend, asked for a little more time to pray about their decision, and we hope that they too can sponsor this work. Thanks to everyone who is so generously supporting this vital project, and if you are interested in helping, please contact the Rectory staff for more details.

SPECIAL NEEDS MASSES This weekend February 12th, 2017, at 4:00pm we will celebrate our Special Needs Mass. Your children are especially welcome at this warm, family celebration. The following Special Needs Masses are February 26, March 12 & 26, April 9 & 23, May 21, June 11. Please join us.

This Sunday the Gospel continues to carry us deeper into the Sermon on the Mount, begun a couple of weeks ago. Now we hear Jesus repeatedly telling us, “You have heard it said…, but I say….” And what Jesus says is really tough: not just don’t kill, but don’t be angry; not just don’t commit adultery, but don’t even look lustfully at another; not just don’t take a false oath, but don’t swear at all. Yikes! How do we do that? Can we do that? It would seem that Jesus thinks we can. He trusts us to be able to be better than our worst selves. He trusts us to be able to be righteous, loving, honest. He challenges us not only to give charity, but to do justice, to give to the needy, for example, but also to work to correct the systems that allow people to be needy. Jesus is calling us to our best selves. Let’s give it a try. ~Pax Christi Metro New York
