    INTRODUCTION

Sixth Sense is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical

world around us with digital information and lets us use natural handgestures to interact with that information

It was developed by Pranav Mistry, a PhD student in the Fluid InterfacesGroup at the MIT Media Lab

SixthSense bridges the gap by bringing intangible, digital information outinto the tangible world, and allowing us to interact with this information vianatural hand

SixthSense comprises a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera. Thehardware components are coupled in a pendant like mobile wearable device

    Camera

Capturesan object in view and tracksthe users hand gestures

It sends the data to smart phone

It acts as a digital eye, connecting you to the world of digitalinformation

    Projector

The projectorprojects visual information enabling surfaces and physicalobjects to be used as interfaces

The project itself contains ab atter y inside, with 3 hours of battery life

A tiny LED projector displays data sent from the smart phone on anysurface in viewobject, wall, or person

    Mirror

The usage of the mirror is significant as the projector dangles pointingdownwards from the neck

AWeb -enab ledsmart phone in the users pocket processes the video data

Other software searches the Web and interprets the hand gestures

    Color Markers

It is at the tip of the users fingers

Marking the users fingers with red, yellow, green, and blue tape helps thewebcam recognizegestures

The movements and arrangements of these makers are interpreted intogestures that act as interaction instructions for the projected applicationinterfaces.

The hardware that makes Sixth Sense work is a pendant like mobilewearable interface

It has a camera, a mirror and a projector and is connectedwirelessly to abluetooth smart phone that can slip comfortably into ones pocket

The camerar eco gnizes individuals, images, pictures, gestures onemakes

with their handsInformation is sent to the Smartphone for processing

The downward-facing projector projects the output image on to themirror

Mirrorr eflects image on to the desired surface

Thus, digital information is freed from its confines and placed in the

    physical world

    RELATED TECHNOLOGIES

Augmented reality is a term for a live direct or indirect view of aphysical real world environment whose elements area ugme nte d byvirtual computer generated imagery.

Gesture recognition is a topic in computer science and language

technologywith the goal ofinter p r eting humangestur es viamathematical algorithms.

Computer vision is the science and technology of machines that see. Itis concerned with thetheo r y behind artificial systems thatextr actinformation from images.

Radio Frequency Identification is basically an electronic taggingtechnology that allows the detection, tracking of tags and consequentlythe objects that they are affixed to

    14/22

You can use the Sixth Sense to project a

keypad onto your hand, then use that virtualkeypad to make a call.Make a call

Call up a mapWith the map application we can call up

the map of our choice and then use thumbsand index fingers to navigate the map

Draw a circle on your wrist to geta virtual watch that gives you thecorrect timeCheck the time

Create multimedia readingexperiencesSixth Sense can be programmed toprojectrelated videos onto newspaper articlesyouare reading

The drawing application lets the user draw

on any surface by tracking the fingertipmovements of the users index finger

Sixth Sense uses image recognitionormarker technology to recognize productswe pick up, then feeds us information on

those productsGet product informationGet book informationThe system can project Amazon ratings onthat book, as well as reviews and otherrelevant information

The system will recognize your boardingpass and let you know whether your flightis on time and if the gate has changed.

Get flight updatesFeed information on peopleThe system will project relevant informationabout a person such as what they do, wheretheywork, and so on

Take picturesIf you fashion your index fingersand thumbs into a square("framing" gesture), the systemwill snap a photo.

After taking the desired number ofphotos, we can project them onto asurface, and use gestures to sortthrough the photos, and organizeand resize them.

Sixth Sense recognizes the objects around us, displayinginformationautomatically and letting us to access it in any way we need

The Sixth Sense prototype implements several applications thatdemonstrate the

usefulness, viability and f lexibility of the system

Allowing us to interact with this information via natural handgestures

The potential of becoming the ultimate "transparent" user

interface foraccessing information about everything around us
