INTRODUCATION

Text

Extrasensory perception is called sixth sense

In the tactile world, we use our five senses to take in information about our environment and respond to it.

Page 4: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

INTRODUCATION

Text

» But a lot of the information that helps us to understand and respond to the world doesn’t come from these senses.

» Our goal is to harness computers to feed us information in an organic fashion, like our existing senses.

» Sixth sense device is a wearable that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

INTRODUCATION

Text

» The prototype of sixth sense uses a camera and projector brought together in a pendant that is worn around the neck.

INVENTOR

Text

» Pranav Mistry , an IIT graduate and research assistant with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s – MIT Media Lab, has unveiled new technology called Sixth Sense.

» The thrilling potential of sixth sense technology won “Inventor of the year 2009” by popular science.

DEVELOPMENT OF SIXTH SENSE TECHNOLOGY

» "We wanted to make information more useful to people in real time with minimal effort in a way that doesn’t require any behavior changes". To provide such an interaction an idea came for the development of Sixth sense device.

» To develop this technology a simple hardware, but some serious programming is needed to merge the digital world with the physical world.

Just a few things it can do…

“The device recognizes items in stores, and then gathers and projects information about products to the user. It also able to provide quick signals to let users know what the best products are based on their needs.”

“Another amazing feature is the device’s ability to look at an airplane ticket and let the user know whether the flight is delayed or on time. It is also able to recognize books (based on an image or RFID) in a book store and then project reader reviews or author information from the Internet onto blank pages.”

“The device can also recognize articles in newspapers, retrieve the latest related stories or video from the Internet and then display them on pages for the user. Say goodbye to your dictionary and encyclopedia.”

WORKING OF SIXTH SENSE DEVICE

» The sixth sense device operating person has to wear the device around the neck and colored Magic Marker caps on four fingers (red, blue, green and yellow) helped the camera distinguish the four fingers and recognize his hand gestures with software.

»"We have a vision of a computing system that understands, at least to some extent, where the user is, what the user is doing, and who the user is interacting with".

Page 10: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

WORKING OF SIXTH SENSE DEVICE

» The software searches the internet for information that is potentially relevant to that situation, and then the projector takes over.

»The Sixth Sense can then proactively make information available to that user based on the situation.

»"All the work is in the software". The system is constantly trying to figure out what's around you, and what you're trying to do.

WORKING OF SIXTH SENSE DEVICE

»The device gathers data on the environment around the user, searches for information using the Internet as a data store, aggregates the results, and presents it back to the user via a display.

» Interaction with the projected digital data is possible with molecular caps. Means they are the sensors for receiving the information from the external world.

» We can think it as a meta-data system for real life.

Purpose of Sixth Sense

I believe Sixth Sense’s purpose would be to allow K-12 students and teachers to interact with information on a level not experienced before

In my opinion, at least initially, its purpose would be to motivate…motivate…motivate

This can be used in almost all fields of study.

Operation of the device is simple with the natural gestures.

APPLICATIONS

Current applications

» In games: Unlike the Nintendo Wii, which keeps you in front of the television, the Sixth Sense system might allow a kid to go outside, and be able to get a real tennis lesson on a real tennis court.

»In hospitals: Imagine its application in hospital set up. The nurses and doctors, can simply walk to the patient and track info. Integrating EHR(Electronic Health Record) would make this application an amazing solution in hospital info management.

Page 14: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

APPLICATIONS

» In smart phones: To identify the thieves. As is as soon as the thief try to steal the smart phone then it captures the photograph of thief and sends it to the owner's server that night, giving police enough visual evidence.

Taking pictures with simple hand gestures, interacting with projected keypad, finding a member in our blogger, searcing for the best product, knowing a plane’s late arrival, drawing a picture, sign in to our mail, to open a menu.

Page 15: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

APPLICATIONS

» Sixth Sense is a clever way of combining RFID as a sensor with other patterns and behavior of people

• Radio frequency identification (RFID) is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wirelessly, using radio waves.

Page 16: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

APPLICATIONS

Future applications

» Marker less, bare handed tracking of gestures, robust object recognition and tracking and self-correcting projection.

» The next generation washing machine that implements the 6th sense technology.

• This new technology can sense the weight of the load and sets the speed of the washing cycle accordingly. It can even sense the amount of soil in the clothes and utilizes the required amount of detergent and water for a perfect ‘A’ class wash.

Page 17: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages:

»Easy to use.

»It will not cost more.

»Highly flexible.

»It can be operated with simple human gestures.

»Direct interaction with the projected digital information

Page 18: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

» It is open source model. So it is available to everybody. This development is more interested in allowing the public to access the tools to carry the technology further than just a research company.

»This is an effective application for the development of android scanner application.

»Interactive shopping.

Page 19: Sixth Sense Ppt2003

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Disadvantages: (after all coin have 2sides)

» Sometimes there is no control over the data.

» Sixth sense software and hardware at present works with only smart phones like Google phone and the iPhone.

» What about the medical issues of electronic pollution? Like it took many centuries before we discovered the negative effects of the industrial revolution, it may take many years before we discover the negative effects of the digital revolution.
