“We are not the pill for a cure, we are a blanket for their comfort” – Mr. Les Freidman

GOAL

The foundation strives to help children face the emotional and physical hardship of long term, debilitating treatment by staying connected with their loved ones even when they are far apart in the hospitals for their treatment.

In a year they nearly do 18-20 Mikey’s way day.

PROJECT GOAL

The project is aimed to increase the no of Mikey’s Way day for the organization from their current no. of days visited i.e. 18-20 to 20-24 days/year.

Outcomes from the initial Meeting

o Utilization of the fund raised from the sponsors for the purchase of the products which are to be distributed.

o Analyzed that in almost all the Mikey’s way day, the amount purchased for the products that were distributed

to the children was almost double.

Conclusions

o Lack of analysis of the data of previous serving done at the hospitals.

o No centralized purchase system of the organization.

Actions

o DMAIC

DEFINE Defining the process improvement at Mikey’s Way

o Increasing Mikey’s Way Day.

o Increasing no. of patient covered in the single Mikey’s way day.

o Improve the analysis of the pre event survey.

Six sigma tool:

o Project Selection Matrix.

The project selection matrix shows the Givens, wants and threats of the three potential

project choices.

o Project Charter.

Helped us in creating a high-level view of the process, and to understand the needs of the

customers of the process.

MEASURE Measures the performances of the process or the processes in an organization.

Tools used in this phase of DMAIC are the data collection plan, benchmarking, measure system analysis, voice of customer gathering, process flow chart.

Analyzing the current process, the new improved process flow was recommended: Value added process flow:

1. creating a calendar for organizing the events.2. Taking a beforehand survey on the hospital for the event organized.3. Purchasing according to the age group and gender.4. Less in transit time for product deliver as the order is pre placed.5. Distribution of goods in hospital.6. Storing of balanced inventory at warehouse.

ANALYZE Analysis stage consists of analyzing the collected data and finding out the route cause and critical

parameters affecting the system.

Key Factors:

o Identify potential root causes for the process problem.

o Confirm actual root causes with data available.

o Analyze data to establish the baseline performance of the transactional process, relative to the

critical to quality measures established based on customer input.

Six Sigma Tool used:

o 5-Why Analysis

o Cause and Effect Diagram

o Pareto Chart

IMPROVE The problem in its core was found to be Improper planning & scheduling of events.

Key Factors:

o Improper planning & mapping of required area for listing of appropriate hospitals.

o Periodic meetings with the employees to discuss the targets, aims & goals.

o Procurement of the statistical data at least one week before the distribution day.

o Pre arrange the transportation of products from facility to the hospitals.

Six Sigma Tool used:

o Product Failure mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA)

CONTROL Control phase of DMAIC is to make sure the new way of working is sustained over time.

Key Factors:

o Standardizing and documenting the new process.

o Training and creating a plan to monitor the process.

o Procurement of the statistical data at least one week before the distribution day.

o Pre arrange the transportation of products from facility to the hospitals.

Control Measures suggested:

o Proper utilization of funds.

o Records of Mikey's Way Day.

o Proper Inventory Management.

CONCLUSION Six sigma tools helped to understand their individual importance and application at Mikey’s Way

Foundation.

six sigma DMAIC methodology assisted to systematically define and highlight the problem areas

within the scope of the project.

six sigma methodology helped to find out the various causes affecting the failure modes of the

organizational operations and results are seen by comparison of before condition with present

condition.

Upon implementation and controlling the recommended actions, we expect that at least 20%

increase in Mikey’s way day so that they serve more customers and with 40% reduction in the cost

of arranging a Mikey’s way Day.
