  • Dear friends of YogaYoga is one of the most important spiritual and healing traditions in the world. It teaches regular and consistent practice of asanas, pranayama, mantras, meditation, service, devotion and self-knowledge.Yoga addresses principles of human behaviour and right lifestyle. These include the right use of the senses, the emotions and the mind. Thus it is relevant to everyone and to the deeper aspect of human culture.Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda developed a practi-cal teaching system to share this knowledge with all audiences and all levels of society. The crisis we have in civilisation today is not simply an ecological and political crisis; it is a crisis of consciousness. Yoga can help to act with compassion and awareness, to bring greater unity and harmony to our-selves and to humanity.

We look forward to seeing you!Sivananda Yoga Retreat House

Welcome to the Yoga Retreat House

THE UNIVERSAL SCIENCE OF YOGA has been practised for thousands of years in India, where people have retreated to the peace of the Himalayas for yoga and meditation. Today many people all over the world appreciate yoga as a very open and hol-istic system, which provides a positive philosophy for everyday life. At the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House, people from around the world have been finding their way back to a holistic lifestyle in harmony with nature, benefitting from increased resistance to stress, greater lung capacity, weight loss, regeneration and im-proved functioning of all body systems.Today in the West there is no doubt about the healing and pre-ventive benefits of yoga. Yoga gently brings body and mind into harmony with the laws of nature and illuminates the search for a deeper meaning in life. Everyone can practise yoga, no matter their age, culture or religion.Experience for yourself the benefits of a physical, mental and spir itual regeneration, and discover how it feels to be a healthier and more relaxed you. You can visit on your own, with a friend or bring the entire family. Everybody in our team is dedicated to the practice of y oga, and we are looking forward to being of service to you during your stay.

Swami Vishnudevananda provided the impetus to establish a spiritual oasis in the Alps as early as the 1970s. The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Retreat House was founded in 1998 in a wide valley of the Kitzbhel Mountains surrounded by fresh air, pure water, green meadows, the sound of cow-bells, quiet woods, medicinal plants along scenic foot - paths, sparkling brooks and pristine lakes.

Yoga recommends the following four practices to equally develop body, mind and spirit:

    The yoga of synthesis

KARMA YOGAActing selflessly, without thought of personal gain or reward, purifies the heart and sublimates the ego.

BHAKTI YOGAThe yoga of devotion appeals to the emotional nature. Through prayer, worship and ritual, the awareness is focussed on the Divine as an embodi ment of love.

JNANA YOGAVedanta philosophy explains how to realize the union with the unchang-ing Reality of the Soul. The delusion of diversity and all apparent cont-radictions disappears in the Light of Reality.

RAJA YOGA/HATHA YOGAAsanas (yoga postures) and Prana-yama (breathing exercises) of Hatha Yoga play a major role in the physi-cal and mental control of yoga. In Raja Yoga the main practice is silent meditation. This brings about physical and mental balance.

Swami Vishnudevananda taught a synthesis of the classical four paths of yoga in five simple principles:

Proper Exercise (Asanas) enhances the flexibility of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments and stimulates circulation. Flexibility and strength of the spine keep the body youthful.

Proper Breathing (Pranayama) connects the body to its battery, the solar plexus, which is an enormous storehouse of energy. Stress and depression can be overcome by breathing more deeply and with increased awareness.

Proper Relaxation (Savasana) If the body and mind are subjected to constant overload, their perfor-mance suffers. Yoga relaxation techniques not only help to relieve existing stress symptoms (like muscle tension and breathlessness) but also help develop resistance against external stress factors.

Proper Diet (Vegetarian) is healthy, natural and simple to prepare. It is digestible and easy for the body to absorb. It consists in proper food choices which have the most positive effect on body and mind, at the same time causing the least harm to other living beings and the environment.

Positive Thinking & Meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana) are the keys to peace of mind. By con-trolling the mind, we can eliminate negative thought patterns and experience inner peace.

The Daily Schedule at the Retreat House

    Practice

Yoga classes The morning and afternoon yoga asana classes consist of breathing exercises, Sun Salutation, basic postures, variations and deep relaxation under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Individual corrections and detailed instructions allow participants to perform the exercis es safely and in a relaxed manner, enhancing flexibility and mobility.Newcomers and rusty students are encour-aged to practise simple variations of the basic poses. Special guidance is available for those with back problems or other health conditions such as general exhaustion. Advanced partici-pants are encouraged to try classical variations and hold the poses longer.Weather permitting, the yoga classes are held outside under large sun shades on our beauti-ful cedar platform, which affords a spectacular view of the Wild Kaiser mountain range.

New to yoga? First-time visitors to the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House are given an introduction to the basic principles of the yoga practice, meditation, the philosophical aspects of yoga and the yoga vacation schedule.

MeditationThe morning and evening meditation sessions are the most peaceful hours at the Retreat House. The practical guidance for positive think ing and mental relaxation combined with concentration exercises gradually lead to inner peace. The chanting of Sanskrit mantras (heal-ing and energising sound sequences) deepens the experience of peace. A reading from yoga texts gives inspiring insights into yoga philoso-phy and psychology.

Silent walksThe guided silent walks at the Retreat House

offer moments to treasure the gentle rising and setting of the sun, the various phases of the moon, the hidden beauties of the valley, the panoramic view of the Wild Kaiser and Hohe Tauern mountains, the songs of many bird species, the variety of trees, bushes and medicinal plants along the footpath. The breath deepens, body and mind relax, the flexibility of the joints increases, the senses regenerate and expand and the mind rediscov ers natural contentment and peace.

The vegetarian dietLight, nutritious and freshly prepared meals are an integral part of the yoga vacation. The Sivan-anda Yoga Vedanta Centres many years of ex-perience in both East and West have gone into the development of menus which provide a more balanced nutrient intake, increased vitali-ty and better digestion.Meals are served buffet-style and are made from fresh, organic ingredients using only pure oils. During your stay you will enjoy a variety of whole grains, carefully cooked vegetables, a nice variety of side salads, expertly prepared pulses, dairy products from the best organic dairy farms in Tyrol, home-made bread, jams and stewed fruits as well as imaginative desserts. You can get individual advice on how to choose the right food combinations for your constitution.

Learn how to cookIn regular cooking workshops you can learn vegetarian alternatives for promoting physical and mental well-being: a variety of recipes for busy people, energy-giving breakfast ideas and light dinners.Youll learn how to make healthy, fresh and energising meals at home in no time. There is no additional lecture or workshop on days with a cooking class.

Programmes are subject to change or cancellation.

The Retreat House is a vegetarian, non-smoking and alcohol-free environment. To gain the greatest benefit from your yoga stay it is necessary to participate in all activities. Participation in the afternoon lecture/workshop is optional.
