April 2017

In the Gospel of Matthew, right

after the moment of what we fig-

ure was the resurrection of Jesus

(there was an earthquake), a de-

scending angel came and sat on

the stone. I guess it meant the

stone that had been rolled up

against the tomb where the Lord

had been laid. Had the earth-

quake dislodged the rock, or, did

angels from heaven move it? It

doesn’t really matter: the stone

was rolled away from the dank-

ness of death, opening the way of

the light and life of Jesus Christ!

For me, the fact that this particu-

lar angel actually sat upon the

stone was his way of proclaiming

victory over the darkness of sin

and loss. A wrestler who wins is

the one who ends on top; the

golfer who is at the zenith of the

leader board is the prizewinner;

the horse that wins the race is the

one who is triumphant. The angel

who sat on what had at first held

the Messiah of the world inside

(while He shared His victory with

hell itself), must have been

mighty proud of what God had

done that morning!

And so should we!

But first, we must face the passion

of this Messiah. We must contin-

ue through a few more weeks of

Lent, enter into Holy Week—

when the passion of Christ reach-

es a crescendo—and come to the

tableau we can only watch

through “proverbial” fingers as

we sense His dying moments up-

on the cross; the storm that thrust

itself upon the earth at the mo-

ment of Death; and, the slamming

of that same stone up against the

tomb where Christ was laid –

with the seal of the governor

placed upon it to secure its con-

tents. Death. Real Death.

And then – the light of an Easter

dawn, those rays of sun, those

rays of hope, that glisten above

the darkness and point the world

into a new creation, a fresh direc-

tion: everlasting life!

Come and see; my brothers and

sisters, come and read through

this newsletter and find those

ways that help us know the pas-

sion and sense the true joy of the

resurrection! Worship with us.

Study with us. The angels are sit-

ting on the stone—God has won

again. And He did it for you and

for me. We will rejoice!

Marcia Peters opened the meeting with devotions: Proverbs 20:18.

Rev. Mike Ward, from Gronlund Sayther Brunkow shared with council how to grow our aware-

ness and desire to be more charitable toward agencies in need, institutions, and for our own

congregational needs for the future.

Thanks was shared for Pastor Myers’ work during the Lenten season; by Tom Marshall for those

who looked in on Susan while he was out of town; and, to Property Committee for the new mi-

crowave and working on a plan for the back steps in the parking lot.

Last month’s minutes and monthly reports were approved.

It was decided that all special Lenten Offerings will be given to our WELCA’s health kits pro-

ject.

Council discussed ways to work with the congregation as to how to adopt a more permanent

Sunday worship schedule. A letter will go out soon, followed by small group discussion at the

church so council can hear from the parish about what they think is best in this situation.

We need congregational members to help out in the nursery for the next few weeks (5-6

weeks?) because Tammy Crawford has sustained a broken ankle and is on crutches. Please

volunteer!

Property has suggested that since the back steps need repair that we might want to consider

doing the renovation to the back entrance while we are at it. Council requested Property to get

cost and labor bids for the April meeting.

Richard Koepper announced that the audits are almost finished.

2nd Confirmation Retreat with Pastor Jim

Saturday, April 29, at the Nipper house, Pastor Jim will meet with the class to discuss “all things cat-echetical.” Sounds dubious, huh? It will be educational and fun.

We will meet from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and lunch will be provided. Ru-mor has it, it will be tacos (per re-quest from last time….the home-made pizzas were, well, interest-ing…ha!)

See you all then!

Your Council Needs to Hear from You!

Everyone watch for a special mailing coming very

soon that will help us gather thoughts and ideas for

the decision-making process on a more permanent

Sunday worship schedule. We are planning to pro-

vide small group meetings at the church (schedules

for signing up for a group discussion will be posted

soon). Please make plans to make yourselves avail-

able for these important meetings. We will try our

best to set up different days and times of the day

and night so that everyone has a chance to attend!

Thanks for your patience! We are looking forward

to hearing from you!

Lenten Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

From the Cradle to the Empty Grave

The season of Lent is one of thoughtful reflection. During this time of the church calendar, Christians ponder the unfolding events that led to Jesus’ condemnation and crucifixion: His triumphal march into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday; His firm words of warning about the events to come; His sham trial, brutal scourging, and hor-rific crucifixion. No day could be any darker; no travesty more calamitous than the slaying of God’s own Be-loved Son. And yet, that’s what we find on Golgotha: our sins demanding His death on a cross to satisfy the Father’s righteous judgment.

Taken from the cross, the lifeless form of Christ was placed in another man’s tomb. With that action the world thought the ordeal complete, the savagery it had witnessed something it could now put behind it. But God’s work wasn’t quite done. Three days later, out of a sealed tomb—guarded to prevent theft—Jesus rose from the dead. And with that thunderous crescendo, mankind’s disgrace and ruin, which had destined it for eternal slaughter, is forgiven through the blood of Christ.

Lent is when we turn our eyes to the cross. It is there where Jesus, the sinless Son of God, suffered the in-

dignity and shame of dying for our sins. And it is there where God’s wrath was satisfied by His Beloved Son’s

supreme sacrifice, winning salvation for all who call Him their Savior.

For some time now we have had blood collection

services with Marsh Blood Services. After their

merger with Wellmont some changes have been

made. For us to have the mobile bus and the em-

ployees needed, we must have a minimum of 20-25

donors that are PRE registered. During our last

blood drive (that was moved from Wednesday

night to Sunday morning), we collected 14 units of

blood. Only three people pre-registered. That was

much better than the two previous drives held on

Wednesday evening when only 6-8 units were col-

lected, with no one pre-registering but, this was

still short of their requested quota. Walk-ins are

always welcome and never turned away, but to

continue to have the blood drive on a regular ba-

sis, we must have 20-25 people signed up by mid-

week prior to the drive.

So where are we going to get more donors? Do we

want to try to partner with another church or busi-

ness, taking turns being the host? Would you be

willing to go to a different location to donate on a

rotation? Do we have more members who would

be willing to donate? How can we reach out to

them? Do we need to have a contest, maybe the

over 40 challenge the under 40? Should we discon-

tinue the drives at OSLC and all that want to donate

go to the Marsh center?

We want to hear from you. Please offer your

thoughts. Have you or a loved one had to have a

lifesaving blood transfusion? Would you be willing

to share your story with our church family? We

would love to hear from your personal experience

about what donated blood has done for you or a

loved one.

Please give prayerful consideration on becoming a

committed donor. We do not want to lose this im-

portant mission. Contact us with your thoughts on

how we can sustain this important out-reach pro-

gram. Please remember—it only takes a little to

help so many. One donated unit of whole blood

can help up to three people in need.

Musings from the Organ Bench

Hello My Friends:

It is Spring! Officially! I am looking at the cal-

endar for the next few months and I am getting

so very excited about events here at OSLC!

As I think ahead, I want to share a great oppor-

tunity with you! Many of us talk about making

improvements in our world! I have a great way

to do this! Work with our children! Show them

love and kindness while instructing them in the

faith – and what better way than to help in Va-

cation Bible School this summer! (June 25 – 30).

We are doing a musical called “Moses and the

Freedom Fanatics.” This classic production

centers around the plagues and Pharaoh’s de-

cision to let the Israelites leave Egypt.

We will need helpers in the following areas:

Serving meals each night (easy meals).

Cooking/serving one meal that Moses and

the children of Israel would have eaten

(more challenging but I have recipes.)

Making rhythm instruments.

Working on a backdrop.

Working with the acting and speaking.

(Any former Thespi-

ans???)

General helpers (wherever needed).

I hope that you will

contact Marcy Aaoren

or me soon to nurture

and encourage our lit-

tle ones in their first VBS musical. Bible School

is always fun and I believe we’re onto another

spectacular venture this summer! If you are un-

able to help us, please come to the production

the last night. (More about later.)

Yes, the children are our future – but they are

also our “now.” As Pastor Jim so often has said

in the past: “Come and see.”

Blessings and peace as we move toward the

holiest day of all – Easter!

Love in Christ, carolynn bailey

We Take Requests! Do you have a hymn that you dearly love but haven’t sung in a while? Give your request to our organist and she will find a way to work into our celebrations.

Covenant Presbyterian Church – Weekend of Earth Day

All are invited to this dynamic symposium, a 4-hour multimedia workshop that uses videos, personal re-flection, and group activities to engage citizens as the co-creators of an environmentally-sustainable, socially-just, and spiritually fulfilling world.

Four questions are asked: Where are we? How did we get here? What is possible now? Where do we go from here? What’s happening in our modern world (economically and politically) that prevent us from creating the world in which we want to live?

Covenant Presbyterian, our neighbor up the street at 603 Sunset Drive. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Program begins around 1:30 p.m. An optional pot-luck luncheon is at 12:30 p.m. Learn more and regis-ter at www.Pachamama.org for more info contact: Noel Marshal at: [email protected] or call 920-312-0301.

PRAYER REQUEST BOARD

In your bulletin every Sunday, we have a list of family/friends and service people that we pray for regularly. Our new Prayer Board (located on the “sign up” board in the hall) will give us an opportunity to know a little more about the people we are praying for. The Prayer Board will give us a closer connection to the people on the lists.

Please use a form provided to give some specific prayer information and you are en-couraged to add a photo as well. Tack this to the board. When your prayer has been answered, remove your form and photo, drop the form in the pocket for Cindy’s in-formation, and add their name to the An-swered Prayer List so we can thank God for His love and care.
