BRIEF GUIDE TO THE SPANISH 1A FUNDAMENTAL COURSE

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Spanish 1 series is based on a communicative and task-supported curriculum that helps students develop basic skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) in Spanish to engage in interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes of communication. Students are also exposed to products and practices of Spanish-speaking countries and Latino communities in the United States.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:

1. Textbook: Conéctate: Goodall, Grant and Lear, Darcy (1st edition, 2016) McGraw-Hill: New York. ISBN # 978-0-07-338525-9.

Audio material is available through ConnectPlus website that came with your textbook.

COURSE/UNIVERSITY POLICY:

1. Class Dynamics. I will attempt to balance a relaxed atmosphere, where students will be willing to use the Spanish language without fear of criticism, with a need for academic excellence. Try, however, not to get as comfortable with the class so as to not study enough; some anxiety about academic performance is always helpful. On the other hand, avoid getting so tense that you “freeze up”. Please, avoid monopolizing the class or otherwise creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for your classmates. Remember that I am always available during office hours to help you.

2. Academic Dishonesty. Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at the University of California, Irvine. Cheating, forgery, dishonest conduct, plagiarism, and collusion

in dishonest activities erode the University’s educational, research, and social roles. They devalue the learning experience and its legitimacy not only for the perpetrators but for the entire community. It is essential that all members of the academic community subscribe to the ideal of academic integrity and accept individual responsibility for their work. Please familiarize yourself with the UCI Policy on Academic Honesty: http://www.senate.uci.edu/senateweb/default2.asp?active_page_id=754Note: Any incident involving cheating, plagiarism, etc. will affect your course grade and will be reported to both the instructor’s as well as to the student’s Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

3. Students with Disabilities. Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact the Disability Services Center at 949/824-7494 as soon as possible to better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Students with a registered disability are encouraged to make an appointment with the instructor.

4. Workload. Students with a large course- or workload and students with weak studying skills/habits are not encouraged to take this class until they solve those problems first. Each class will require approximately two hours a day of careful and systematic studying. Without sufficient time and solid studying skills/habits, you will struggle to pass this class. You are strongly advised to evaluate your particular situation carefully before deciding to stay in the class.

5. Add/Drop Policy. The School of Humanities follows the university’s deadlines on adding and dropping courses. A student may drop a course only during the first two weeks of the quarter and may add a course only during the first three weeks. Students are responsible for making sure they meet all deadlines. An exception to these policies may be requested only for extenuating and documented circumstances outside the student’s control. See http://www.humanities.uci.edu/ undergrad/current/add_drop.php

6. Grade Requirement to move on to next level. It is the School of Humanities’ policy that, “within the beginning and intermediate foreign language instructional sequences, students must earn a ‘C’, ‘P’ [73.0%], or better, in order to advance to the next level of instruction.”

COURSE COMPONENTS:

1. Attendance. To develop communicative skills in Spanish, class attendance is critical; and therefore, it is mandatory. Regular class attendance is expected and essential for successful completion of the course. Students may fail the course due to excessive absences. You are allowed two absences per quarter. For each absence beyond the second one, your final grade will be lowered 1.0 percentage point. Three late arrivals will be counted as an absence. A tardy is arrival is defined as arrival within the first ten minutes of class; arriving any time after 10 minutes is considered an absence, not a tardy. Excused absences are granted in the case of a verifiable emergency (e.g., medical or legal leave). You are required to present proper documentation. It is your responsibility to make up all the work and meet all required deadlines. You will sign an attendance agreement stating that you have understood the attendance policy.

2. Participation. Being prepared for and participating in class activities are some of the most important means of attaining the goals of this course. This course requires active participation in

3

Spanish, which involves arriving to class well prepared, participating in group activities and class discussions, volunteering to answer questions or sharing ideas, and remaining on-task. Using your laptop for surfing the web, checking email, sending instant messages, speaking to classmates in English about unrelated class discussions or similar behavior is disruptive to class and will negatively affect your participation grade. Participation grade will be evaluated during the middle and end of the quarter using a Participation rubric. The instructor will calculate the average of both grades.

3. CONNECT Activities. You will see required activities from the Connect site. You must complete all of the exercises assigned in the Connect site as indicated on the syllabus. Your overall grade for each Capítulo (1 through 6) will be based on: a. completion of all exercises; and b. the effort you put to completing the activities.

The activities are graded by Connect site and your instructor will get a percentage of your grade. For the activities, you will have three attempts to resubmit activities with corrections from the first attempt.

Overall Grade Scale (for each Capítulo):

100 points:

a. All or nearly all (maybe missed one or two) activities for that Capítulo were completed.

b. The effort to complete the exercises was EXCELLENT based on the high percentage scores obtained (above 85%).

75 points:

a. The majority of the exercises for that Capítulo were completed.

b. The effort to complete the exercises was SATISFACTORY based on the percentages obtained (70-80%).

55 points:

a. Less than the majority of the exercises for that Capítulo were completed.

b. The effort to complete the exercises was UNSATISFACTORY based on the percentages obtained (less than 70%).

0 point:

a. None or close to none (only completed one or two) of the activities were completed.

4. Redacciones (writing tasks). You will complete a 200-350 word writing task with a first and second-revised version. You will be graded on the first version and then you will re-write a second version incorporating your instructor’s feedback from the first version. To encourage you to write a good first copy, you can only receive a total of 3 additional points added to your first version grade for your second version. The final grade will consist of the average of both

versions. If you fail to complete a second revised version, a total of 3 points will be deducted from your first version. This assignment must be turned in on the website turnitin.com – Class code: 13599785; password: zotzot.

5. Oral Exam: Interview. At the end of the quarter, you will take an oral exam that will consist on an interview of two possible scenarios: (1) you applied for a job at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles; or (2) you applied for an internship at an architectural firm in Panama City. Both positions require some basic knowledge of Spanish. You will not have a choice and will know your scenario the same day of your exam. Your instructor will play the role of a director who will test your Spanish skills for the internship. There will be more details to follow during the quarter.

6. Prueba de verbos. During the quarter, there will be a total of 5 short verb quizzes based on the homework for that day. This is a way to encourage you to memorize the different verb endings throughout the quarter.

7. Pruebas. There will be three regular chapter quizzes. They will test reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. There are NO MAKE-UPs for the quizzes. If a quiz is missed due to a documented police, court or medical emergency of your own, the next quiz will count double; permission to make-up the last quiz is given solely at the discretion of the individual instructor.

8. Final Exam. This exam will reflect the overall emphasis given to most of the skills practiced during the quarter. Please make sure to refer to the first page of the syllabus for date, time and place of the final exam. It is your responsibility to resolve any scheduling conflicts you may have due to work, other exams, etc., before that date. Final exams may not be taken before the scheduled final exam date on the first page of the syllabus. If you are unable to take the final exam during the scheduled time on the first page of the syllabus, you must take it after that final exam date. Students, who cannot make up the final exam before the due date for submission of grades, will receive an INCOMPLETE. In this case, students are responsible for making up the final exam before the end of the following quarter. If a student does not make up the final exam the next quarter, the student’s final grade will be calculated with a “0” for the final exam.
