On-Call Procedures

You will be scheduled for one DOD (Doc of Day – this is the “on-call” shift) per week which runs from 0800-midnight (regular shift for physicians 0800-0800). An exception to this would be when you are scheduled to work DOD on a weekend, and then you would normally be on-call from 0800-0800. During the week, you will still be scheduled for other duties like clinic, etc. on these days.

DOD Hand-Over - WeekendsWhen working DOD on a weekend, before you can go home you must look after 0800 hand-over. All DOD worked over the weekend (Friday, Saturday or Sunday) must report for hand-over on Monday 0800.

DOD Hand-Over - WeekdaysIf a patient has a family doctor with hospital privileges in the region, notify the doctor sometime between 0700 – 0800 the next day. This is usually done by phone, unless you see him/her in the hospital.

For those whose physicians do not have hospital privileges, there will be another doctor that will look after their patients if/when they are admitted to hospital.

Most just want to know they have a patient who has been admitted so they can round on them. Some will want a very brief story (most of them get a list of patients when they arrive to hospital.)

It is the resident’s choice (in most cases) if they want to follow after they admit patients to hospital. If they chose to follow patient(s) they would coordinate with that patient’s attending and discuss throughout the admission. You would round on the patients you are following daily.

If there are issues with patients you are following that come up during the day, nurses usually call the attending. If there are less urgent issues they would wait until the patient is rounded on, so if residents see the patients before the attending then they can deal with it and then coordinate with the attending.

You will be scheduled to work one weekend per block during FMBT. If you are scheduled to work DOD on the Sunday and you stay until after midnight you will have the Monday off post-call (after hand-over if having worked DOD). If you foresee needing a day off to rest after working the weekend you may opt to use two of your half-day SDL slots. Please notify the program assistant of this in advance.

Academic Days These occur the last Tuesday and Wednesday of each block. We join with Steinbach and the bilingual program.

If you do not attend our rural Academic Days you will be expected to make this up by presenting extra talks at Academic Days (one extra talk per Academic Day missed) when hosted by Boundary (whether you are sick or unexcused; however this does NOT include vacation) and/or extra SAMPS on the topics you missed. Remember to notify chief resident of off-services through VENTIS with days you need off for Academic Days. Also note that you are still expected to attend Academic Days when you are on elective time so please consider this especially if making plans for out-of-province electives.
