) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The Nathan Boone House is a one and one-half story "Classic"
saddle-bag pioneer log house, built in 1837. This'house is of
the typ'e constructed on the east coast from ViTginia and North
Carolina, west through Kentucky and Tennessee to the Oaark area
of Missouri and Arkansas. (Buford L. Pickens in a letter to
Dr. Richard S. Brownlee, Director of the State Historical Society
of Missouri, December 16, 1963.)
The facade (west wall) is approximately 55 feet in length. It is
symmetrical with two windows on either side of the central doorway.
The hand-hewn oak log walls rest on a stone foundation. Portions
of the foundation visible on the north, east and south sides have
been faced with cement. The logs have been sheathed in two layers
of weatherboardlr.g. The log structure is visible, however, on the
rear porch where the wall is exposed above the eave line of the
lean-to roof.
All of the structural timbers appear to be original with the
exception of a 10 to 13 foot section of replaced roof rafters
on the west slope of the roof. (Buford L. Pickens in a letter
to Dr. Richard S. Brownies, December 16, 1963.)
Current roofing is wood shingle ex-posed on the west (front) slope,
and covered with sheet metal on the east. The deteriorated con
dition of the underlying structure of the roof is evidenced by
its sagging between the rafters.
Two large chimneys of rough-cut, locally quarried stone are centered
on the exterior of the north and south gable end walls. Cf these,
the north chimney appears to be in good condition with base,
stepped shoulders and stack intact. The south chiraney has lost
its stack; the opening has been capped vrith concrete. Mortar
used in the chiraney construction is sandy-colored and fine-grained
with pebble inclusions I/loth of an irch or less in diameter.
A porch on the rear (east) side of the house, originally open,
has been partitioned. The southern 2/3 of the length of the porch
has been screened in; the northern 1/3 of the porch is enclosed
by wood frame walls to accommodate a kitchen and half-bathroom.
The window and door openings on the exterior are all siraply framed
in wood. The four windows symmetrically placed on the facade
contain double-hung four over four light sash. Two windows on the
east wall of the kitchen addition are also double-hung with six
over six light sash. Attic windows appear only on the gable end

walls and are of the casement type, with six lights in each
fraioe and one frame to each window. Both pairs of attic
windows have recently been covered with sheet metal.
Although the exterior house is devoid of ornamentation, a
noteworthy feature appears on the facade. The four major,
plate support beams (butts visible) orienting east and west
project in a line just below the eaves forraing a slight
overhang. Each of these beam butts is cased for weather
protection.
The-interior plan of the house is reflected in the symmetry
of the facade. Inside, two generous size roons, each 21 feet
square, flank a central hallway.
In the north room the original, wood-pegged, wide-plank
flooring has been covered with narrow width flooring. The
floor level is raised about 3" above original. Flooring in
the south room is original.
Fireplaces in both rooms are stone, and .neither is functional.
The firebox of the north room fireplace has been reinforced on
each side with brick and mortar which extends the length of
one brick into the fireplace. The mantles do not date from
the construction of the house, and are ante-bellum with mould
ings similar to the door trim. (3-aford L. Pickens in a letter
to Dr. Richard S. Brov.nlee, December 16, 1963.) The hearth
and firebox of the south room fireplace are in deteriorated
condition. This fireplace is presently concealed from view
by the addition of a dryvrall partition e;-tending the width of
the room immediately in front of the fireplace from the east
to the west wall. Shallow closets have been added to either
side of the fireplace.
The north room fireplace wall has been paneled with knotty-
pine of recent date. A stove pipe hole has been cut above
the fireplace. The remaining walls in the north and south
rooms are plastered and wallpapered.
Each interior door is made of six upright planks secured by
a bevel-edged batten at top and bottom. (See photograph.)

NATHAN BOOEE HOUSE
7. (continuation sheet ff2)
An enclosed corner stairvjay at the rear (east end) of the
central hallway gives access to the second floor loft or
attic. The attic is partitioned into two rooms, separated
by a narrow hallway, the east end of which has been par
titioned. The structural members and partition log walls
are e;tposed in the attic. Interstices are filled with wooden
wedges and a coarse-grained mortar which includes pebbles
and chopped straw.
Although a high proportion of the original form and material
survive in fair condition, the house is deteriorating.
This former homestead is pleasingly situated in a shallow
valley between two low, prairie hills, one to the east and one
to the west. Ash trees abound on the property. The Kathan
Eoone family graveyard is approximately 500 yards to the north
of the house. Inscriptions on the gravestones are still
legible. A slave cemetery is located north of the family
plot. Also included on the grounds are a threshing floor and
several springs. (Dr. B.B. Lightfoot in a letter to Dr.
Richard 3. Brownlee, December, 1?63.) There are no visible
remains of the original outbuildings.

The Nathan Boone House is primarily significant as one of the
first structures built in southwest Missouri. Nathan Boone,
the youngest of Daniel 3oone's ten children, constructed the
house in 1837 with the assistance of his sons. This building
is architecturally significant as a rare surviving exanplo
in Missouri of the "classic" saddle-bag type of pioneer log
house built prior to the advent of saw mills. (Buford L. Pickens
in a letter to Dr. Richard S. Brownlee, December 16, 1968.)
Born on March 2, 1731 in Boone's Station, Fayette County, Kentucky,
Nathan Boone came to Missouri in 1799 settling in the Ferine Osage
River Valley District in St. Charles County. Nathan and his
wife, Olive Van Bibbar, received Spanish land Grant Ho. 179U
(630 acres) near the Fenine Osags Creek where he constructed a
tv,To-story rock house.
Wiile living in the St. Charles area (1799-1337), Nathan Boone
mnufactured salt at Buonslick in Howard County with his brother
Daniel Eorgan Boono froa 1307-3/315; served as a captain of a-
coi7pany of rangers during the War of 1812; and traveled with
William Clark in 1303 to the point above the Missouri River at
which Fort Osage was constructed for the protection and trading
rights of the Osage Indian tribes. Boone acted as messenger to
sum-iron the Big and Little Osage tribes to the newly constructed
fort which served as the westernmost outpost of the United States
Government until 1319.
In May of 1320, Nathan was chosen as one of three delegates to
represent the St. Charles District at the Missouri Constitution
Convention in St. Louis. (Louis Houck, A History of Iflssouri,
Vol. Ill, p. 2k9.)
Nathan also served as a surveyor for the Federal government in
Missouri, Kansas and the Indian Territory. While engaged in this
work, Boone was attracted to his future homesite, located in a

grove of ash trees in southwestern Missouri. In 1835, Nathan
sent his son to this location to file preemption rights.
(History of Greene County, Missouri, 1333, p. II)?1.) The
exact amount of land preempted"!)/ Nathan's son is not known.
However, Nathan Boone is said to have owned at one time 1,200
acres at this site. ("Graves of Nathan Boone's Family,"
Missouri Historical Heview, Vol. 23, July 1929, pp. 660-661.)
In 1837, Nathan Boone was forced to sell his home and 700g-
acres in the Fernme Osage "/alley to pay a debt which he had
contracted while serving as a bondsman for a county official
who'had absconded with the county funds. Some time during 1337, Nathan Boone and his family moved to the newly acquired
land located north of the present tarn of Ash Grove. The log
house was built that same year.
Nathan Boone is noted for his distinguished service with the
United States Army. He entered the array as a Captain during
the Black Hawk War of 1332, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel
in 1853. (ifouis Houck, A History of Missouri, Vol. Ill,
pp. 26V265. ) '
Nathan Boone died at his hone in 1856; his wife died two years
later. Boone and other members of the family are buried in a
graveyard north of the house.
