District 287 School Board The school board meets twice monthly in January, February, March, May, June, September and October. During the months of November, December, April, July and August, they meet monthly. The monthly meetings are open to the public.

Online Participation for Educators Provides online professional development particularly in topics needed for re-licensure. Explore Middle: Provides a positive, structured, safe and secure environment in which academic, social, emotional, vocational and behavioral needs are ad-dressed to assist students who have been identified with Emotional and Behavioral needs that impair their ability to learn in a traditional academic setting. Focus North: Provides students, who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and who have significant social-emotional and behavioral needs, with an education program that prepares them to be functional, participatory adults. Phase North Provides a “bridge” between school and adult programs for young adults with moderate to severe mental impairment and often one or more sec-ondary disabilities. About Edgewood Education Center Each day, more than 150 students and 50 staff go to Edgewood for their School day. During their November, 2009 meeting, the District 287 School Board approved the purchase agreement for Edgewood Education Center. The seller was Osseo Area Schools, a member district. The purchase is a long-term, cost-effective solution that will continue to serve stu-dents well into the future. Recent improvements include technology and energy updates; a basketball court/fitness area; and a student garden that was built to promote healthy eating.

The Production Center is a work environment where students with disa-bilities do the hands on work for technology lab projects requested by the District staff and the community. CIP CIP serves students K-12th grade with an educational label of Autism Spec-trum Disorder and others who benefit from a predictable and individualized program focusing on social skills and academics. CIP provides programming for students that are identified with Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD) along with a serious and persistent mental health diagnosis. Students receive full day academic, social emotional and transition curriculum to meet their needs and intensive supports/services provided for emotional and behavioral needs.

Invest High School: Provides programming for middle school and high school students who are identified as EBD with serious and persistent mental health diagnosis; stu-dents receive full day academic, social emotional and transition curriculum to meet their needs with intensive supports/services provided for emotional and behavioral needs

NEC Elementary: This program serves the target population of students in grades K-5 whose primary disability is Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD). These students have struggled with success in a less restrictive setting or are reintegrating from a more restrictive setting. Options Middle The target population for this program includes students grades 6-8 identified as Emotional Be-havioral Disorder (EBD) who need a structured educational program that addresses their struggle with self-regulation, academics, and attendance. Students may also have poor social skills and difficulty with authority. Safe: Students served in this program are K-12 with a medical diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), who need more intensive services than are provided by other programs. Students typically have significant behavioral chal-lenges related to their diagnosis of FASD including: difficulty generalizing infor-mation, sensory overload, tactile defensiveness, impulse control, slow cognitive pace, deficits in executive function, and a marked immaturity compared to peers of the same age. Strive: The target population for this program includes students in grades K-12 who have a primary disability of Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD) and Develop-mental Cognitive Disability (DCD). These students have struggled with success in a less restrictive setting or are reintegrating from a more restrictive setting. SUN: This program is for stu-dents grades K-12 with a focus on meeting the needs of students who have been identified with social, emotional, sensory and behavior needs. Most SUN students have a cognitive disability and other health impairments. Instruction focuses on developing appropriate social, aca-demic, functional, and transitional skills.

ALC Plus Provides diverse options through a flexible schedule and individualized curric-ulum to meet home districts’ graduation requirements for students referred from Hennepin County workers. Independent Study Programs Provides credit recovery for students 16 years or older who meet periodically with a teacher and complete work assignments on their own time. North Education Center Alternative (NECA) Provides a site-based, secondary academic education for high school credit recovery, pregnant and parenting teens, English Language Learners, students on probation, and those who need a vocational or practi-cal work experience program. Early Learning Center Onsite daycare for parenting teens. Targeted Services Programs Provides an educational boost through extended day and year programs to elementary and middle school students identified as poten-tially at-risk.

About the North Education Center On September 4, 2012, more than 400 students arrived for the

first day of school in the new North Education Center. The 157,000 square foot building was de-signed for learning. Each day, approximately 200 staff arrive at NEC, to work with students in programs designed for their specific learn-ing needs. The 4-year NEC project began in 2008 when the School Board and Administra-tive Team conducted facilities study examin-

ing potential financing, sites and building use.

Venture High School Provides intensive instruction and strategies for students with unique needs with a diagnostic profile of a neurobiological disorder (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety and/or obsessive-compulsive disorders, Tourette Syndrome) and frequently a co-occurring mental health diagnosis and have cognitive abili-ties within the average range. Venture Transition Provides transition programs for young adults; ages 18-21, with special needs who have significant needs with a diagnosis of a neurobiological disorder e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette syndrome). Most students have cognitive abilities within the average range, and need intense social emotional programming in addition to development of transition skills. Most students served in this program design require multiple and intensive services from disability specific specialists. These students can move between classes and manage class changes as well as social transitions throughout the day given accommodations as identified on their IEP.

Northwest Tech Center was in the national news this year. An article featuring the NWTC literacy program was printed in the Odyssey, the an-nual magazine pub-lished by the National Deaf Education Cen-ter. Instructors Greta Palmberg and Kendra Rask were guest au-thors in the story High Expectations + Reading Intervention Plan = Big Jump in Reading Scores. Greta and Kendra began a literacy program for Deaf/Hard of Hearing transition students. The intense daily program benefits students by increasing reading skills by several grade levels. West Education Center (continued)

West High School Provides an academic learning community which supports the educational needs of students between the ages of 13-18 who are committed to, or are working to maintain sobriety. The environment is nurturing and supportive of the social and emotional needs of the students and offers a full range of educational opportunities within core academic and elective content areas via direct and on-line instruction. W-ALT NEW IN 2013 Provides a highly personalized approach to earning a high school diploma

through a blended on-line model and seat-based model.

About West Education Center Each day more than 130 students and 85 staff go the West Education Center. District 287 purchased the Bren Education Center in 2008. Following minimal remodeling and safety updates, staff and students arrived at BEC in the summer of 2008. In 2012 the name was changed to West Education Center to reflect the site geographic location. Also in 2012, the Bulldog Café opened. Students work in the café along with job coaches. The Bulldog is the school mas-cot at WEC. The beautiful artwork below was made by WEC students.

Who is Intermediate District 287? Intermediate District 287 is a consortium of 12 west metro school districts offering more than 120 programs and services specially designed to help meet the unique learning needs of member district students. For our many programs listed below, students are referred by their district of residence. In some cases, students and parents can choose to enroll directly. In addition to student services, District 287 offers other educational support services including: staff development; conference center; legal services; testing and assessment services; and student accounting and billing services. Member Districts District 287 is an education partner focused on innovative solutions for twelve Member Districts including: Brooklyn Center, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Orono, Osseo, Richfield, Robbinsdale, St. Louis Park, Wayzata and Westonka. How is District 287 funded? District 287 operates on a fee for service basis. Revenue to fund student services is generated by tuition billing. District 287 manages an $83 million budget. Our Important Mission The mission of Intermediate District 287 is to be the premier provider of innovative spe-cialized services to ensure that each member district can meet the unique learning needs of its students.
