Berm
A berm is a mound of soil, usually
topped with plants, berms are great
for screening, shutting out noise,
giving instant height to a garden.
They can also add interest to a flat
landscape, direct foot traffic and
drainage, provide some wind
protection, and be a focal point in the
landscape.

Deciduous Tree Detail and Drip Line
Fort Totten Park Cross Island Pkwy. bet. Totten Ave. and 15 Rd. Queens
Deciduous trees include oak, maple, and hickory
trees. Oak trees are characteristic deciduous
trees that lose their leaves in the fall and re-grow
them in the spring.
A drip line is the area defined by the outermost
circumference of a tree canopy where water drips
from and onto the ground.

Buffer A buffer is a natural or man-made
buffering, and landscaping requirements
address visual, light, and sound impacts.
Screens and buffers can enhance
community appearance, reduce land use
conflicts by separating incompatible land
uses, improve the appearance of parking
areas and public rights-of-way, minimize
soil erosion, and reduce stormwater
runoff.

Buffer
Bulb-outA bulb out extends the sidewalk into the parking lane to narrow the
roadway and provide additional pedestrian space at key locations;
they can be used at corners and at mid-block. Bulb outs enhance
pedestrian safety by increasing pedestrian visibility, shortening
crossing distances, slowing turning vehicles, and visually narrowing
the roadway.

Reinforced Concrete Retaining Wall
Retaining walls are constructed of
reinforced concrete. They consist of a
relatively thin stem and a base slab.
The base is also divided into two
parts, the heel and toe. The heel is the
part of the base under the backfill. The
toe is the other part of the base. They
can be precast in a factory or formed
on site
Bayside, N.Y
Catch BasinA catch basin or storm drain is a curbside
drain with the sole function of collecting
rainwater from our properties and streets
and transporting it to local waterways
through a system of underground piping,
culverts and/or drainage ditches. Storm
drains can also be found in parking lots and
serve the same purpose.
Commack NY
CulvertA culvert is a structure that allows
water to flow under a road,
railroad, trail, or similar obstruction
from one side to the other side.
Typically embedded so as to be
surrounded by soil, a culvert may
be made from a pipe, reinforced
concrete or other material.

Accessible Rampa slope or inclined plane for joining two different
levels, as at the entrance or between floors of a
building. An Accessible ramp has a slope ratio of
1:12 meaning, for every foot, the ramp height is
one inch

Planted Parking IslandA planted parking island is an island designed parallel to
the front of parking spaces and at the end of parking rows.
They provide a buffer as well as define space in a parking
lot. Additionally, they help ease turning in parking lots.
Planted parking islands allow for the preservation of trees.

Sight TriangleA triangle at an intersection, formed by
the two roads or rights-of-way and a third
line, which must be kept clear of
obstructions such as hedges so that
people in one road can see cars
approaching on the other.

Septic Tank
Septic Tank - a tank, can be above or below ground, in
which sewage is collected. Typically it is installed due to the
lack of connection to main sewage pipes. Waste that is not
decomposed must eventually be removed from the septic tank
by a service company. Otherwise the septic tank fills up and
wastewater containing undecomposed material discharges
directly to the soil, which is detrimental for the environment

Dry Well
South Setauket, NY
Dry Well - A shaft chamber(s) constructed using
concrete or plastic, which helps drainage issues on
properties by having all water directed into the
chamber. It then will slowly drain through the holes
around or continue through another drain pipe.
Trench Drain
South Setauket, NY
Trench Drain - A trench drain (aka channel drain) is a
channel-shaped body that is level with the floor surface.
It is used to contain and drain water in certain areas.
Commonly seen around pools of water, tree stumps,
showers and in front of garage doors.
Invert (Pipe)
South Setauket, NY
Invert (Pipe) - The base interior level of a
pipe, trench or tunnel; (aka the "floor" level).
While the crown level is the highest interior
level, (aka the "ceiling" level).

Roll Curb
Smithtown, NY
Roll Curb - Also referred to as mountable curbs.
They have sloping faces that allow vehicles,
carts, etc. to pass over on it without damages
and with ease. (ex. Crossing over an island as
seen in picture to the left.) Similar to a ramp.
Permeable Pavers
A range of sustainable materials and techniques for permeable pavements with a base and subbase that allow the
movement of stormwater through the surface. In addition to reducing runoff, this effectively traps suspended solids and
filters pollutants from the water.

Silt Fence
A temporary sediment control device used on construction sites to protect water quality in nearby streams, rivers, lakes and seas from
sediment (loose soil) in stormwater runoff.
