The site is located in Hunters Point in Long Island City, Queens. Adjacent to the West of the site is Gantry State Park with the view of the Manhattan skyline including the United Nations building. Immediately to the north of the site is a 32 story high-rise apartment building. Further north there is a food/drink stand for the kids playground, that functions with solar panels. Then the infamous Pepsi- Cola sign is on the far north edge of Hunt-ers Point, with a view of the Queensboro Bridge. Across the street to the east of the site is a 39 story high-rise apartment building, These surrounding buildings are designed “pancake-style” construction where all the fl oors are typical and repeat on top of each other. To the south of the site there is a circular seating area that is framed around a drain. Adjacent to the south of that is a public open plaza for pedestrians to sit and enjoy the view or sometimes concerts. To the east of this plaza is the Riverview restaurant. There also traces of two old gantries and indications of old train tracks. The site is six blocks away from the 7 train at Vernon Jackson Avenue. Between the site and the train station there are multiple restaurants on Vernon Jackson Avenue, a police presinct and a playground for kids.

Gantry State Park, which is right next to the site possess high attraction for tourists and photographers for wedding pictures. They would use the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

However, there is still a high sense of community around the site. There is a great amount of parents walking their dogs and kids. There are a lot of open spaces for pedestrians to sit and enjoy the view, or to watch their children and pets play. There are multiple types of seating, with some implied by the structural attachments and other various types of benches. These parents could potentially be working from home or the mothers may have recently given birth up to a two years ago. There is a elementary school south of the site where kids would leave from to go to the park or playground that is to the north of the site. These parents may also have an artistic background based on the paint on their clothing and due to the high amount of artist studios and musuems such as P.S. 1 in the neighbor-hood.

There are various experiential indications of meshes and skin physically and conceptu-ally on the site. These may act as boundaries, dividing spaces, structurally or act as a sort of enclosure.

There are various types of vegetation which may combine with the use of meshes and structure. There are also different indications of textures and material imperfections. This may be due to the tye of decay, material, time, weather, physical contact or install-ment. This leads to the issue of the strengh and life of a material that should and should not be used on this site.

Population

The population is generally low towards the edge of Hunters Point due to the high amount of industrial facilities. The new residential proposal for Hunters Point South should attract more of the middle class population to move towards the area.

The income/costs near the edge of Hunt-ers Point is higher due to the waterfront and the view of the Manhattan skyline.
