The Foundation for Strategic Sourcing has a Sustainability Initiative Team (SIT) and we are actively seeking additional team members! Sustainability is one of the hottest, most interesting areas in supply chain management. There are many emerging, important issues confronting our industry. We think that the Based on our recent success with Audit one, we know that SIT has the potential to have a lot of influence and can make a positive impact in our industry. We define Sustainability to include all three pillars:
o Environmental sustainability, the greening of our supply chains. o Social sustainability, especially corporate social compliance in the supply chain. o Economic sustainability, especially ethics, compliance and governance in the
supply chain. Examples of emerging issues include:
o Customer expectations that Palm Oil derivatives be sourced from sustainable
palm oil. o Supplier fatigue related to too many corporate social compliance audits o Human trafficking in the supply chain and recent anti-human trafficking legislation
in the UK and in California. o Standardized sustainability surveys being requested by large retailers
What the SIT does is to shares and promotes best practices in sustainability for FMCG companies and their stakeholders. The SIT objective is:
o Complimenting current industry work and driving value for members and
their suppliers by implementing and driving: Sharing and promoting best practices (for example, webinars and symposiums). Establishing common expectations and goals
Driving industry alignment where it will add value and efficiency (for example, harmonized corporate social compliance audits)
o Our approach is to build working sub committees to drive these areas to include:
Develop a series of webinars and/or symposiums to drive education into sustainability best practices and trends
Benchmark and recommend value-added industry leading processes
SIT membership is open to any manufacturer or supplier in the FMCG supply chain, including non NGO’s and outside consultants supporting sustainability initiatives[Cerminaro, Michele] (are we saying we are going to keep this open to outside F4SS members?)
We think that your company should to be a part of this because of previous interest and participation in some of the SIT webinars. Over the next several weeks we will be contacting you to discuss your company’s participation on this team. We are hoping that you will consider joining the SIT, or help us identify the right person(s) at [your company].
