August 5, 2018 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In an on-demand society, it's not always easy to imagine life with less. The crowds of Jesus' day depended on the weather and successful growing seasons for their livelihood. For many of Jesus' listeners, even "food that perishes" would have been a welcome relief. Jesus acknowledges this but tries to draw them deeper. "You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." For people who have just witnessed a miracle, the response is strangely marked by ingratitude. "What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert." Jesus fed them for one day, but Moses interceded with God for 40 years of bread. "Jesus," they seem to say, "can't you just give us more?" How often do we behave similarly in the spiritual life? "If I only I had more patience, then I could be kind to her." "I could be welcoming if I was more outgoing, but that's just not me." "I know I'd be a better parent if I just had more time." Like the crowds, we want Jesus to give us more. We always don't want him to completely shift our paradigm. Perhaps it's not "more patience" we need, but a deeper sense of our own imperfections for a greater sense of empathy. Maybe God is inviting you not to entertain an entire group, but to seek out the quiet person on the fringe. And time may limit you from family engagement, but could God be asking you to reorder your priorities entirely? After all, it wasn't more loaves that the people needed. Jesus is "the bread of life," who sustains our most essential needs. This week, are you looking for more or are you looking for God Himself?

CATHOLIC RADIO OF MARSHALLTOWN As announced last week, our two radio stations - KCRM and KDNH are currently off the air due to the tornado. But our group has met and we are working on several ideas to get back on the air soon. We thank everyone for their prayers.

Catholic Radio of Marshalltown Deacon Roger Polt, General Manager Bob Dick, President CHRIST OUR LIFE - CATHOLIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE We’ve heard from thousands of you. Your words have inspired us. Now let these words from conference attendees inspire you…

“Attending the conference is like being one of the 5,000 that Jesus spoke to on The Sermon on the Mount.”

“The speakers were powerful, the music was moving and the Masses and Adoration were like nothing I have ever experienced! Everyone needs to attend this amazing conference!”

“I am not Catholic, but strongly considering becoming Catholic. This conference helped me cinch the deal.”

“I will never be the same.” For tickets and more information, to ChristOurLifeIowa.com

SISTER PARISH NEWS - FROM FATHER DON Our sister parish in El Salvador is actively providing opportunities for the youth. This is for the future of the church and also to keep them out of the gangs. They organize athletic activities and try to reclaim green spaces to play. The parish is providing music classes for singing and instruments and bringing in musicians to

play in their community. They try to provide books for the children in order to increase literacy. Several youth have painted murals on churches and other community buildings to increase the beauty and counteract gang graffiti. When we visited, our committee and the Catholic school combined to create a mural representing the joining of our people. The parish in Santiago de Maria uses art and music in many ways to express their faith and their thoughts. The logo in this article is from the mural that was created in El Salvador.

“I repeat a great principle that is often forgotten and that has to be taken into account at all levels of morality. You can’t do evil for a good end. You can’t buy freedom. You can’t try to console the families of the oppressed by causing other families the same anguish. You can never say that the ends justify the means.” Oscar Romero ~ July 9, 1978
