About Me:
My name is Ani Avetisyan and I am the Special Assistant to the Executive Director at the University Student Union at CSUN. I recently received my Master’s degree from CSUN in College Counseling and Student Services. Given that not too long ago I was a student myself, I understand the various challenges and struggles that many of you are encountering. When I began my journey attending community college, I faced many obstacles which have shaped who I have become today. As a first generation college student, it was difficult for me to find support and guidance. Although my family was supportive, they could not provide me with the proper resources and knowledge about college.
Choosing to attend community college after high school was a safe decision for me because I did not believe that I was capable of attending a four-year university and successfully graduating. Due to the lack of motivation and doubt within my abilities, and myself I was often times challenged with taking risks and making the most out of my experiences. My counselor impacted my life critically because he was a great support system for me. He helped me in exploring many different areas in my life and was an influential role model. Through my experiences as a college student and my relationship with my counselor, I developed a passion in helping students accomplish their goals and succeed in higher education. As a mentor for Sistahood Community, I want to be able to provide you with various opportunities and experiences that will enhance your experience at CSUN. As you mentor, I want to be able to support you by providing you with knowledge and strategies that will help you overcome different challenges and ultimately accomplish your personal, academic, and career goals.

About Me: Assistant Professor, Pan African Studies. I teach courses in the Stretch Writing Program, “African American literature since 1930,” and “The Black Woman in Contemporary Times.” I have a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Harvard University, 2012. During graduate school, I served for three years as a residential tutor in a residence hall where I lived with, advised, supervised, and mentored undergraduate students. If you need any ideas for study breaks, please ask me because I organized them once every month for our students.
What I can offer to Sistahood Community: I am happy to share my listening skills each week and would love to help brainstorm solutions for any and all concerns or issues that may arise for Sistahood members. Likewise, I am thrilled to celebrate the victories of our members. Also, I speak Spanish and conversational Portuguese and would be excited to share language learning with members as well. I want to learn an African language and hope to start studying Yoruba again. Let’s learn a new language together! My strong project management and planning skills could be put to good use for any future Sistahood events or activities. I am eager to discuss academic and career planning with members as well. As a formerly shy student, I developed many tips for surviving and thriving in academia—particularly the classroom experience—and I would love to share these.

Finally, I am interested in starting a Sistahood reading and discussion group where we would read a common text and discuss together. As the instructor for PAS 324: “The Black Woman in Contemporary Times”, I invite all Sistahood members to take the course and hope to build a formal connection between the Sistahood community and this course in the near future.
What do you enjoy most about working with CSUN students? The enthusiasm, energy, talent, and perseverance of CSUN students inspire me every day. I greatly enjoy working in small groups and having 1-on-1 discussions with students in addition to interacting in the larger classroom setting. I am delighted to develop relationships with students outside the classroom in an informal, mutually supportive environment.

About Me:
I earned my master’s degree in Public Administration in 2005. What I enjoy most about working with CSUN student is the diversity; diversity in family structure, race, culture, and insight.
What I can offer to Sistahood Community: (Personal) Being the first college graduate in my family, I understand the determination one goes through to “make it”. I came to college by myself, navigated the college campus and made it a point to get involved and find likeminded, positive women. I want to let these young ladies know that strong, positive, like minded women are within reach and enthusiastic to guide. (Educational/ Professional) My experience in Human Resources and earning my master’s degree will allow for me to assist those interested in this field or those related. (i.e. Resume, interviewing, applications, etc.) (Networking/Etiquette) The importance of networking and how to carry oneself in various situations/environments is imperative to navigate one’s career path. These are skills that need to be shared and taught to the young ladies.

“Uniting the hearts and minds of African American & Black female students to explore and learn together”
About Me:
My name is Paulette Theresa and I have a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. The Concentration of my degree is in Culture & Diversity.
What I can offer to Sistahood Community:
What I can offer to Sistahood Community is Workshops on “Anxiety Management,” “Self-Care,” “Becoming a Woman of Confidence,” “Black Females and Eating Disorders,” and Black Women and the Impact of Images.”
What I enjoy most about working with CSUN students is that they are hard-working and they persevere
through life challenges. As a psychologist I believe it is important to connect with and meet students
where they are at, and help foster their mental health, social maturation and academic needs, which is
why I established the CSUN “Sistahood Community.”
Our innovative support group allows African American/Black female students to realize congruency
between themselves and their academic environment. I hope the Sistahood Community and its
gatherings remain as a caring network and opportunity for young Black women to connect around
psychological and ethnic-specific needs in a safe environment.

About Me: M.S. – College Counseling and Student Services (a CACREP accredited program)
Manager, USU Events - University Student Union, Inc.
Coordinator of Academic Success and Residential Leadership, Student Housing Residential Life
Community Director – University Village Apartments, Student Housing Residential Life
Graduate Assistant, Involvement Advisor – Matador Involvement Center
Graduate Assistant, Training and Development – Associated Students
I have an M.S. in counseling, so I take a holistic approach to student development and 1:1 conversations
in general. I am also a CSUN alum twice over, so I carry a set of institutional knowledge and experience
that can lend good personal insight.
I am a mother, wife, Christian, and first generation college student – one or more of these dimensions
may overlap with our mentees and serve as an anchor of familiarity. I had to achieve work life balance
very early on in my career, often working two jobs to afford school as I received no financial support
from home. Many CSUN students find themselves juggling multiple commitments and discussions on
prioritizing and balance can be useful at any stage.
I am the owner of Well Said, LLC – a custom writing services business where I specialize in helping
people craft and revamp their personal narratives. Learning how to define yourself well, and early on,
means others don’t have to do it for you.
What do you enjoy most about working with CSUN students?
I enjoy the familiarity of my work given not too long ago I was a student myself. I remember the
excitement I felt as a new student and what I believed pursuing a college education meant for my
future. I enjoy their excitement for what the campus has to offer and I admire that so many students
come here in efforts to better themselves while remaining closely connected to and often times a
critical piece of, the home environments where they were raised.

What do you enjoy most about working with CSUN students?
Diversity of opinions and backgrounds, which make for rich, textured discussions, both in and outside
the classroom.
Many are creative, enthusiastic and hungry for knowledge and self-growth. I hope to be instrumental in
assisting in that growth process.
There are quite a few first generation college students (as am I), and I especially enjoy helping to turn on
the “bulb” for them, and assisting them in painting a vision for their future that they may not have ever
dreamed possible.
I, just in general, enjoy shaping minds and heightening students’ awareness.
There are many talented, bright students on campus. I consider my job very reciprocal, in that I
constantly endeavor to learn from my students and to gain insight from their unique perspectives.

A ROOM FULL OF SISTERS
A room full of sisters, like jewels in a crown
Vanilla, cinnamon, and dark chocolate brown…
Now picture yourself in the midst of this glory As I describe the sisters who are part of this story.
They are wearing purples, royal blues and all shades of reds
Some had elegant hats on their heads.
With sparkling eyes and shiny lips They moved through the room swaying their hips.
Speaking with smiles on their African faces Their joy and laughter filled all the spaces.
They were fashionable and stylish n what they were wearing
Kind sisters who were loving and caring.
You see, it’s not about how these sisters appeared Their beauty was in the values they revered.
They were smart, articulate and well-read
With all kinds of Black history stored in their heads
Jugglers of professions, managers of lives Mothers of children, lovers and wives
Good-hearted reaching out to others
Giving back to the community and supporting our brothers.
All of these sisters struggled the path Suffered from prejudice, endured the wrath.
But they brushed off their dresses and pushed on the door
And they came back stronger than they were before.
Now, imagine if you will The essence and thrill
As you stand feeling proud In the heart of this crowd
A sisterhood of modern Sojourners today
Still out in front blazing the way.
A room full of sisters like jewels in a crown Vanilla, cinnamon and dark chocolate brown.

I am a Black Woman
I am a black woman
the music of my song
some sweet arpeggio of tears
is written in a minor key
and I
can be heard humming in the night
Can be heard
humming
in the night
I saw my mate leap screaming to the sea
and I/with these hands/cupped the lifebreath
from my issue in the canebrake
I lost Nat's swinging body in a rain of tears
and heard my son scream all the way from Anzio
for Peace he never knew....I
learned Da Nang and Pork Chop Hill
in anguish
Now my nostrils know the gas
and these trigger tire/d fingers
seek the softness in my warrior's beard
I am a black woman
tall as a cypress
strong
beyond all definition still
defying place
and time
and circumstance
assailed
impervious
indestructible
Look
on me and be
renewed

“Ego Tripping” – Nikki Giovanni
I was born in the congo I walked to the fertile crescent and built
the sphinx I designed a pyramid so tough that a star
that only glows every one hundred years falls into the center giving divine perfect light
I am bad
I sat on the throne drinking nectar with allah
I got hot and sent an ice age to europe to cool my thirst
My oldest daughter is nefertiti the tears from my birth pains
created the nile I am a beautiful woman
I gazed on the forest and burned
out the sahara desert with a packet of goat's meat
and a change of clothes I crossed it in two hours I am a gazelle so swift
so swift you can't catch me
For a birthday present when he was three I gave my son hannibal an elephant He gave me rome for mother's day
My strength flows ever on
My son noah built new/ark and I stood proudly at the helm
as we sailed on a soft summer day I turned myself into myself and was
jesus men intone my loving name
All praises All praises I am the one who would save
I sowed diamonds in my back yard
My bowels deliver uranium the filings from my fingernails are
semi-precious jewels On a trip north
I caught a cold and blew My nose giving oil to the arab world
I am so hip even my errors are correct I sailed west to reach east and had to round off
the earth as I went The hair from my head thinned and gold was laid
across three continents
I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal I cannot be comprehended except by my permission
I mean...I...can fly
like a bird in the sky...

Still I Rise You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may tread me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history's shame I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.
