Now that you are more than halfway through your first term here at RIT, it’s time to enroll for the next term.

The Enrollment Process

Page 2: SIS Enrollment Process
Presenter
Presentation Notes
4 main things students need to remember to do during the enrollment period.
Page 3: SIS Enrollment Process

Step 1: Check Your Enrollment Appointments and Holds Log in to the new SIS and check what time your enrollment appointment is. Check for academic or financial holds—holds on your account may prevent you from enrolling. You may not be able to remove holds instantaneously, so take action to resolve them in the weeks before your enrollment appointment

Page 4: SIS Enrollment Process

Step 2: Search for Classes and Build Your Shopping Cart Use the new class search to find classes. If you are unsure of the course subject code, click select subject and you can browse all RIT course subjects using the number line provided. Although there is an alphabetical search, the alphabetical codes will not be used until we make the switch to semesters. Add classes to your shopping cart and create back-up plans in case your first choices fill up. Click "Validate" to make sure you meet the requisites and don't have any conflicts.

Page 5: SIS Enrollment Process

Step 3: Check-In and Double-Check If you have questions about what to enroll in, check-in with your advisor, either by email or in person, to make sure you are on the right track. Then make sure to double-check your shopping cart closer to the time of your enrollment appointment to ensure no classes have closed. If a class is full you may have an opportunity to wait list the class.

Page 6: SIS Enrollment Process

Step 4: Enroll In Your Classes When your shopping cart is all set and your enrollment appointment begins, click "enrollment shopping cart," select the appropriate term, check the box for the classes you would like to take, and click "enroll."

• This is what you will see the first time you log in to enroll

• You may have seen this before

Presenter
Presentation Notes
There is a lot of information in the student center and it can be a really great tool to use once you know what it contains.
Page 10: SIS Enrollment Process

Notice:

• The Student Center is Personalized -- make sure it says your name

• The center shows your current class schedule

• Check out your contact information to ensure its accuracy

Presenter
Presentation Notes
First time you log into the student center you should see your current weekly schedule
Page 11: SIS Enrollment Process

Things to check before enrollment time: • Holds: All freshman will

have an advising hold when registering for the first time; you will need to schedule an appointment with your advisor before this hold can be lifted

• Do this before your enrollment time

• Examples of Holds

include: • Dean’s Hold • Registrar’s Hold • Financial Hold • Advising Hold • Judicial Hold • Health Hold

Here’s what a hold looks like when you click the details link and then click on an individual hold.

I have two appointments, what is the difference?

1. The shopping cart appointment opens across campus for everyone at the same time. • You can begin building your shopping cart at this time.

2. An enrollment appointment is a randomly assigned start time for you to begin your enrollment. • The time is just a start time; you can enroll in classes from the shopping cart and

continue to edit your schedule through the add/drop period of that term. • The day is determined based on Year level

What is the Shopping Cart?

• The shopping cart is a unique feature to the enrollment system that allows students to preplan their schedules.

• We encourage students to put back-ups into their shopping cart just in case classes fill up before their enrollment appointment.

• The shopping cart makes enrollment day quick and simple and can be completed in five minutes.

Page 14: SIS Enrollment Process

• Enrollment Dates: 1. Shopping Cart

Appointments • Open for all

students across campus on the same day

• Several weeks before enrollment begins

2. Enrollment Appointments • This will vary

across year levels • Click the details

link to find out your appointment time

Page 15: SIS Enrollment Process

Enrollment Appointments: • Your appointment is

just a start time; you can continue to add classes until the end of add/drop period, which is the first week of the quarter the class is offered.

• If you drop classes between week 2-7 of classes, you will receive a penalty grade of W.

Presentation Notes
Advisors in this system can look at students schedules and give opinions about classes but they have been encouraged to have students to enroll themselves whenever possible. Advisors can not enroll a student prior to their enrollment appointment, nor can they move a students enrollment appointment.
Page 17: SIS Enrollment Process

Note: You have been assigned different types of advisors that will fill different roles in your academic career.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
From here students can click on the advisors with a blue link and directly email them from the system. It is important to note the differences between types of advisors. Students can have multiple advisors, each with a different role.

• If you know the course subject code you can enter it directly into the Course Subject box

• Then you can hit enter to see all courses offered under that subject

• If you know the full course number you can enter the first four digits into the course subject and the next three into the course number then hit enter

• If the course is being offered it would appear on the next screen

• If you don’t know the course subject code, click select subject

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Course planning sheets from your home departments will help you identify the classes you should search for.
Page 21: SIS Enrollment Process

• The search by subject with the alphabet will not be used until the conversion to semesters in 2013-14

• The alpha will return no search results

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Fall 2013 enrollment, done in the Spring of 2013, will be different. For this enrollment, students will search by the Alpha codes. Ex. Clicking A will turn up programs such as Accounting.
Page 22: SIS Enrollment Process

• You will search by the course number

• RIT only uses numbers 0-5, so numbers 6-9 will return no search results

Page 23: SIS Enrollment Process

• Select the subject you wish to see results for

• You will be returned to the search page with the subject field populated

• Then hit enter to return all courses offered in that subject for that quarter.

Page 24: SIS Enrollment Process

Presentation Notes
The ”show open classes only“ box is automatically checked. Before the enrollment period begins all classes will show up with or without this box selected because students will not have enrolled in classes for that quarter. As classes fill up they will begin to be removed from the lists if this box is selected. Students may unselect the box before hitting enter.

Classes Offered

Page 26: SIS Enrollment Process

From the classes offered list you can click additional details to view Course Attributes.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Course attributes identify classes that have already been assigned interpreters, captionists, and notetakers, as well as other types of classes such as honors or general electives. If a class doesn’t have an interpreter, captionist, or notetaker assigned yet, you can still request one through Access Services.
Page 27: SIS Enrollment Process

• From the list of classes select the one you wish to take.

Page 28: SIS Enrollment Process

• Selecting a class is a two step process, you must hit next to put the course in your shopping cart

• Also, we recommend selecting the wait list box, so if the class is full you have a chance at getting in as people change schedules

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You can be on the wait list for up to 15 units. Classes are not added to your shopping cart until you have clicked Next, it is a two step process.
Page 29: SIS Enrollment Process

• You will be returned to the search results page after placing a course in your cart

• To see classes that are in your Shopping Cart you can select Shopping Cart

Page 30: SIS Enrollment Process
Page 31: SIS Enrollment Process

• View your Shopping Cart

• Select classes • Hit Validate

Presenter
Presentation Notes
What is the importance of validating? Validating can help students check to make sure that the class is not overlapping in a time conflict with another class they plan to enroll in. Validating can help students limit their problems on enrollment day. Validating can check requisites (ex. Correct year level, program plan)
Page 32: SIS Enrollment Process

Messages: • Read carefully

• A green check mark means that

you don’t have a conflict in your schedule and you meet the requirements in the class

• A red X means that there may be a potential problem, and will give you an explanation message

• Validation does not check: • Reserved capacity • Prerequisites

• In this system you can not:

• Enroll in time conflicts • Enroll in multiple sections

of the same class

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Validation does not check if certain seats are reserved for a certain group of students for a given time period. Students may validate and see they can get in, but then on enrollment day find that there was a major reserved capacity, and all the non-major seats have been filled. Students can enroll in classes they do not meet the prerequisites for (ex. Micro and Macro are prerequisites for Corporate Finance in Saunders) but that does not mean their advisor will not remove them from the class before they take it.
Page 33: SIS Enrollment Process
Page 34: SIS Enrollment Process

1. Check the date/time of your enrollment appointment

2. Select the classes you wish to enroll in 3. Hit the enroll button 4. Select the finish enrolling button to complete the

enrollment process

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is another 2 step process. Check the boxes, click enroll, hit finish enrolling.
Page 35: SIS Enrollment Process

It is important to read the messages next to the course:

• A red X means that your

enrollment into the course was unsuccessful

• A green check mark means one of two things:

1. You are successfully enrolled in a class

or 2. You are

successfully placed on the wait list

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The system is clear, when you read the messages. You can be enrolled in the wait list or enrolled in the class, read the messages.
Page 36: SIS Enrollment Process

• One way to view your enrolled classes is through the enroll tab and under my class schedule

• It tells you under status if you were enrolled or wait listed for a course

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Status appears
Page 37: SIS Enrollment Process

• Another view of your schedule is in your shopping cart, scroll down to view My Class Schedule

Here you can check the status of your class:

• Green check mark means you are enrolled

• Yellow triangle means you are on the wait list

Page 38: SIS Enrollment Process
Presenter
Presentation Notes
To view a different format of the weekly schedule students can click the weekly schedule
Page 39: SIS Enrollment Process
Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is the weekly calendar view that is created once students have enrolled for an upcoming quarter. “Meeting Information not available” means that the class is online.
Page 40: SIS Enrollment Process
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The schedule defaults to not showing class titles, to show the class title students must check the box and then refresh the calendar.
Page 41: SIS Enrollment Process
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Then students will see the class title. Students will have to select this option each time they look at the weekly schedule. It only shows classes students are enrolled in, not what is in their shopping cart.
Page 42: SIS Enrollment Process

Setting up a Swap: • You must be enrolled in classes • You can set up a swap between a

class you are enrolled in and a class in the class search or in your shopping cart

• Swap must be set up prior to being placed on the wait list

Swaps are handy: • When you don’t want to drop

below a certain credit limit • You are enrolled in one section of

the class but would take a different section, if the other is currently full

Page 43: SIS Enrollment Process
Page 44: SIS Enrollment Process

• Select the class you wish to drop

• Hit the drop selected classes button

Page 45: SIS Enrollment Process

• You must finish dropping

• You will receive a results page to show that a drop was successful

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Dropping is another 2 step process. Drop selected class and finish dropping.
