Coverage - Two separate bodice patterns are included. TheClassic Halter style has bikini-style cups that meet in the center.While cool and breezy, the classic version is still perfectlyappropriate for all occasions. The Full Coverage style crosses overat the front, and also comes up higher under the arms to wrapmore fully around the sides and back.

Skirt Length - The A-line skirt can be made in a range of lengthsfrom mini to maxi. The longer the skirt, the more flare at thebottom. The short lengths make for great tops!

Fabric - The dress can be made from a single fabric, or multiplefabrics can be mixed and matched. We love using a contrastingfabric for the lining and/or waistband.

Selecting fabric: Choose light to medium-weight fashion fabrics for the dress. All fabricsshould be prewashed prior to cutting.

Yardage requirements: The chart belowgives the yardage requirements for thedifferent sizes (see page 7 for cutting layouts).The yardages for each component are givenindividually so that the dress can be madefrom different fabrics. If you are making asolid dress, simply add the individual yardagesto get the total yardage needed.

The halter top/dress is a relatively free-fitting style. Each dress sizecan be made in a range of cup sizes to accomodate different bust sizes.

In most cases, sizing should be based on the hip measurement.Because the waist is elasticized, there is some flexibility in waist size.Measurements should be taken around the hips at the largest point,and around the waist at the smallest point. Refer to the size chartabove to determine which size to use. If you do not have the actualmeasurements, go with the size that recipient normally wears in off-the-rack clothing.

Skirt Length

If you do not have actual measurements, use the chart below todetermine skirt piece length. The numbers on the legs are thepossible skirt piece lengths, and fall at approximately the sameplace they would on the leg of a woman of that size. Allowancesare accounted for in the chart, so no other length calculations arenecessary.

To determine which bottom cutting line to use on the skirtpattern pieces, measure from just below the breasts to the pointon the leg where you would like the hemline to fall. Subtract 1from the measurement to account for the waistband andhem/seam allowances.

The suggested cutting layouts for all sizes are provided below. Forsolid dresses, all pieces are cut from a single piece of fabric. Fordresses made with contrasting linings and/or waistbands, thosecomponents will be cut from the contrasting fabric and omittedfrom the main fabric layout. All pieces are cut on or near folds.

Topstitching - A row of stitchingthat is sewn near a seam on theoutside of a garment. Topstitchingadds durability and detail to the seam.

Edgestitching - Topstitching that issewn very close to an edge or seam. Aregular presser foot can be used toposition the needle about 1/16 fromthe edge or seam. For hems, a ditchquilting foot or a blind hemming footcan be to control stitch placement.

Zig-zag finishing - Medium-widthzig-zag stitching on a raw edge toprevent fraying. Serger stitching maybe substituted for zig-zag finishing.

Basting stitches - Long, loosestitches that can be used forgathering. Make sure the bobbinthread tension is set very low (1 or 2),but not all the way down to 0. Usethe longest straight stitch lengthpossible.

Gathering - Pulling the bobbinthreads to make tiny, even gathers inthe fabric. Do not pull on the needlethreads at all, because that will causethe stitching to tighten up andultimately break.

For each bodice piece (fashion fabric and lining): With the rightsides facing, align the top short edge with that of the strap. Stitch1/4 from the aligned edges (a). Press the seam allowances open(b). Place a fashion fabric piece and the corresponding lining piecetogether, right sides facing (c). Align the all of the edges and pintogether. Stitch 1/4 from the side/top edges, leaving the bottomedge unsewn at this point (d).

For each bodiceassembly: Snipthe seamallowance at thecurves, and trim itdown to 1/8 atthe tip of thestrap (e). Turnright side outthrough theopening in the bottom. Work the edges between your fingers to fullyroll out the seams and press (f). Topstitch 1/8 from the edges, allthe way around the assembly (g).

Lay the lining waistband piece outwith the right side facing up (a).

With the right sides facing, matchthe double notches in the fashionfabric waistband with those of thelining waistband. The bodicepieces will be sandwiched inbetween the waistband layers (b).

Stitch 1/4 from the alignededges (c).

Pull the waistband pieces awayfrom the bodice pieces and alignthe single notched edges. Workthe stitched edge between yourfingers to fully roll out the seam(d).

Topstitch 1/8 from the seam.Remove any visible bastingstitches (e).

Pull the fashion fabric waistbandaway so the wrong side of thelining waisband is facing up (f).

Fold the single notched edge ofthe lining waistband over 1/4 tothe wrong side (g).

Front Skirt Addition (All Options)

With the waistband layers pulled apart, lay the assembly out so thatthe bodice pieces are down against the lining (a).

Match the top corners of the front skirt panel with the corners of thefashion fabric waistband. Pin together (b).

Match and pin at the center notches (c).

Align and pin the edges in between. You may need to stretch thewaistband edge a bit to ease the pieces together (d).

Stitch 1/4 from the aligned edges (e).

Pull the waistband layersapart. Press the seamallowance up against thefashion fabric waistband(f).

Apply pieces ofWonderTape to the seamallowance (g). Remove thepaper backing. Note: Forthis step, you may use aglue stick instead. Or,proceed to the next stepand hand baste to hold thelayers together.

Bring the lining waistbanddown so that the foldededge just covers thestitching (h). Stick intoplace.

Working on the fashionfabric side, topstitch alongthe waistband, 1/8 fromthe skirt seam (i). Makesure the stitching catchesthe lining layer.

Lay the back skirt pieceout with the right sidefacing up (a).

With the right sides facing,align the notched edge ofthe casing with the topnotched edge of the skirt.The tabs in the casing willhang over the edges of theskirt. Pin together (b).

Stitch 1/4 from thealigned edges (c).

Flip the skirt piece/casingover to the wrong side andpress the seam allowancedown against the skirt (d).

Flip the casing downagainst the skirt back,making a fold the positionof the seam. Press to setthe fold (e).

For each side seam: Slipthe top/dress over theironing board, and pressthe side seams backagainst the back skirtpiece (k).

Cut the 1 wide elastic to thelength given in the chart onthe right.

Attach a safety pin to one endof the elastic and use it toinsert the elastic into thecasing. Pull it through untilthe opposite end is about1/4 from the casing opening(p).

Pull the snipped seamallowance out from inside thecasing and align it with theend of the elastic. Stitch backand forth near the edges tosecure the elastic to theallowance (q).

Draw the elastic all the waythrough the casing.
