Sir Isaac Newton• First scientist to be

knighted.• 4 January 1643 – 31

March 1727.• Considered to be one

of the most influential people in human history. (as Most physicist are.)

• Wrote the Principia.

Newton’s Laws of Motion1) At body at rest (or at constant velocity) will remain at rest (or at constant velocity) until disturbed by an outside force2) Force = mass x acceleration3) Any action has an equal but opposite reaction.

You need to memorise these in the correct order.

Newton’s First Law

• At body at rest (or at constant velocity) will remain at rest (or at constant velocity) until disturbed by an outside force

• Also known as the law of inertia.

Example:

• If this was not the case the book would fall through the table.

Newton’s Second Law: FORCE

• Force: The ability to do work. That is the ability to apply energy.• Force is also Newton’s Second law of

Motion.• The unit of Force is the Newton• 1 N = Force applied to shift 1 kg at an

acceleration of 1 m/s2. • Force is a Vector

Types of force:

• Applied.• Gravitational • Electrical.• Magnetic.• Friction.• And many more.

Newton’s Second Law of Motion

F=maFor every student who forgets this a small fairy will die.

Example:

What is the necessary force to move a 1500 kg Volvo at 3 m/s2 North. Solution

F= ma = 1500 x 3 = 4500 N North

Now you try:1) A small and extremely cute kitten of mass 0.16kg is given an acceleration of 400 m/s2 south. What was the net force required?

2) A net force of 5.0N acts on a stationary chicklet and causes it to reach a velocity of 4.0 m/s in 2.5s. What is the mass of the object?
