What’s Inside

As a volunteer organization, we rely heavily on volunteers to conduct the business of the Branch. If the notion of volunteering for a position seems daunting, do not be dissuaded. We currently have most all chairmanships filled and are looking to create support positions to assist the chair-men. These positions would not require a great amount of time or effort on your part.

For example, if you have spent a career in advertising or marketing, you might want to join the staff of our Recruiting/Promotion Chairman and supply crucial insights or strategies in getting our branch name and mission out into the community.

If you have an interest in finding well qualified speakers, contact our Little SIR and join him in finding such people. Little SIR Jim Waltz also heads up the Nominating Committee, so if you are looking to contribute but are unsure how to proceed, let Jim know and maybe he can find you a suita-ble position. Jim can be reached at (415) 408-8695 or [email protected]

So if you are a new member or a longtime member or anywhere in be-tween, please pick up an oar and help us row the boat! Good for the Branch and good for the Soul!

AARP Experience Corps

Marine

Judy Kramer is the program manager for AARP Experience Corps Marin, a non-profit focused on literacy in kindergarten-3rd grade. EC Marin places volun-teer tutors aged 50+ in 8 public schools in San Rafael and Novato. Judy’s father was a professor who raised her with the belief that education is the key to many things in life, the gift that keeps on giving. But like many chil-dren, she didn’t heed her father’s wisdom and proceeded to get an MBA from Cal then spend 21 years working with corporate clients at Bank of America. After BofA she stayed home for a time while her children were going through their teenage years. As she volunteered at her children’s schools, and later with

10,000 Degrees, Judy found her father’s teachings coming back and resonating with her. Experience Corps Marin needed someone with management experience and Judy wanted to help others have the educational benefits that she and her family had. By day Judy manages over 100 volunteer tu-tors. On her own time, she is a mentor to high schoolers through 10,000 Degrees. This is a very hap-py chapter in her life.

David McConnell Was Born in New York City, brought up in New Jersey. Has studied in Minnesota, Illinois, and Oklahoma. He has live in those states plus Alas-ka, Nevada, and California. Retired from Pacific Bell at the end of 1987, and since then he has gotten (re)married ,Traveled to all continents and Australia Visited every US state Volunteered with: Environmental Forum (Board incl. President), Golden Gate National Seashore, Audubon Canyon Ranch, Novato Human Needs Center, Marin Medical Equipment Recycling, Gnoss Field Community Association, Political campaigns and Experience Corps (most fun). He’s also built two airplanes and tried to "be there" for 7 direct/step children as well as 5 grandchildren. I’m

also trying to learn to play classical guitar . They will be talking about Experience Corps Marin. EC Marin volunteers must be aged 50+. They tutor in San Rafael and Novato public schools and focus on literacy in kindergarten – 3rd grade.

We inducted 5 new members at the April Lunch-

eon, so let’s make sure we welcome them aboard

at the next one. We had a great speaker, check

out his story on page 5 and the following mem-

bers won bottles of wine. Bill Scott won the Birth-

day wine, Art Boudrealt the Anniversary wine, Bob

Hiday for attendance and Ray Crawford was the

secret greeter and Walt Zebrowski was his tenth

guest for a bottle of wine.

In this month’s installment there are not many updates. Most of what is posted are stories of what

happened in pervious countries.

In their brief visit to Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in Chile, along the Strait of Magellan,

they learned that it played an important role in the heroic story of Ernest Shackleton, an Irish-born

British citizen. In 1916 against incredible odds, he managed to rescue the crew of his ship, the Endur-

ance, after they were stranded in Antarctica. They discovered Shackleton Bar in a grand old mansion

on the main square. Here they learned the story of Ernest Shackleton and how he came to this very

same mansion to beg for help to rescue his men.

Their next installment is of the Iguazu Falls located on the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Para-

guay. The Iguazu Falls are labeled as one of the world’s seven natural wonders, but that doesn’t

even begin to capture the jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring grandeur of this incredible collection of 275

waterfalls. Iguazu is nearly twice as wide as Niagara and 70 feet higher.

Their last report was on April 9th were they tell a story of a brief, overnight visit to Lima. It was a

layover on an air itinerary that took them from Quito, Ecuador, to Santiago, Chile. They tell of an

another experience with a rental car, the loss of a backpack and its recovery, all with the help of

some very friendly people they meet.

I’m not sure where the guys are now, but updates will be posted as soon as entries are made in

their blog.

Hi my name is Raul Carter. I was born in Central America, in the city of San

Salvador. We moved to San Francisco in1943 where I attended parochial

school, St. Paul's , then high school at Riordan, Sacred Heart, and Balboa. I

majored in sports, girls, and getting into trouble. I served in the Air Force,

seen a bit of the world, and returned to the city to continue my education.

I graduated from S.F. State with a degree in psychology and then a master

degree in Counseling Psychology. My major interests are sports of all kinds,

including ,but not limited to baseball ,softball, basketball, football. As I

aged, I became more interested in fishing , especially “FLY FISHING”. It has become my Main inter-

est. I have the privilege of 3 very nice kids, 1 boy, 2 girls, 6 grandchildren, and I great grandchild.

Lastly, I am an avid animal lover. Currently, a Cairn Terrier, 5yrs old, 2 cats, and a Cherry Head

Conure, meanest little parrot in captivity. Lest I forget to mention, I have been married 36 years, not

counting our courting years. In closing, I am pretty much open to trying new things and helping out

where and whenever needed.

Hi I’m John Eller and I grew up in Tulsa, OK. Moved to San Mateo, CA. Then

moved to Cincinnati, OH. Where I graduated high school. From there I went

to the University of Oregon and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture

in '74. I played football, basketball and baseball all four years of high school

but just played intramural in university. I was at university throughout the

Vietnam conflict and never did any military service. I've enjoyed a great

deal of travel. I've visited every state in the US and study and business took

me to me to many countries. Business took me to the Pacific Rim...Japan,

Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and eventually China. I had a Miami office so I also

worked in the Caribbean and Mexico and Costa Rica. In retirement my wife and I have continued to

travel for pleasure and have added New Zealand, Bermuda, St Barth's, Croatia and hiking in the

Alps...France, Italy and Switzerland as new adventures for us. Hobbies obviously include travel and

generally sport related activities like hiking, tennis, bike riding and kayaking. My wife and I enjoy

going out to dinner with friends, going to theater, plays and musicals. We enjoy an occasional date

night with a movie matinee followed by a dinner out. We've been season ticket holders with Marin

Speaker Series and with the Ross Valley Players for many years. My career as an Architect was that I

began with a company right out of college, worked for two years plus and then quit to study archi-

tecture traveling throughout Western Europe for three months and then came home to San Francis-

co found my second job, which I stayed at for 34 years and got married. My wife, Margy, and I have

been married for 39 years this August. Things of note from my career would include joining a firm

with 16 people, helping grow the company to 150, taking over the company from the two founders

and then successfully selling the company to six young partners that I either recruited or promoted

from within the company, all while doing work I loved with remarkable people and got to travel the

world to do it. I have two grown sons. The older is a teacher of under privileged middle school kids

in New York City who just got married this past July. We are hoping for grand kids soon. The younger

is working in San Francisco. He is employee #5 at a fast growing startup company, Zenefits, and is

enjoying it and learning a lot. He has purchased an engagement ring and we expect to hear soon

that he and his girl friend have set a date to wed. I am a Board member for nonprofit organization

known as the Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative or MEHC. I am a Marin County Planning

Commissioner. I also work as a construction volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. I read pretty much

everything and enjoy many different authors and different styles of writing and subject matter,

though mostly fiction. I am a big sports fan and have been a huge Giants and 49ers fan, and now with

Curry redefining the NBA a big Warriors fan as well. I continue to root for the University of Oregon

Ducks and generally have supported the Pac 8,10,12 over the years.

John Noren introduced the Area Governor, Sir Frank Sokolowski to BEC members present. Frank talked about the SIR Speaker Survey and asked how we arrange speakers for our lunch meeting. His branch has selected speakers for the entire year, Question by BEC, how come you have a waiting list for members to join. His response was due to the many activities they have for their membership. This is some of the items John Noren is working on having Activity Coordi-nator for our branch to coordinate all events. No action taken Secretary Report: Copies of the February minutes were emailed to BEC members. A few copies were available at this meeting. The Motion Made, Seconded, & Approved (MMSA) to accept prior meeting minutes as documented. Treasurer Report: Copies of Treasurer’s report were emailed. The Treasurer’s report was accepted by MMSA. Ron still had a couple of checks for individuals not cashed. We are still in need of Audit committee report for review of the financial statement. Kent questioned the check for the roster printing, but this check has cleared by the bank state-ment. The ending cash balance is $2,402.91 for February. Joe Sauerland indicated he would not chair the BBQ Par-ty in August or September. He was not sure if Bob Doering will continue as co-chair this event. In any case a new co-chair will be needed if we will continue with this event this fall. Attendance was down last year. No action was ad-dressed at this meeting. Jack Futoran indicated he will not chair the Day at the

Races this year. This is another event that needs to be ad-

dressed at future BEC meeting

Jack Friesen has five mugs from Christmas party will be distributed today. Ray Crawford talked about the attendance at the month-ly meeting. We are getting mixed numbers of lunches being served and who was present or paid for lunch. Ray needs a better handle on who is being excused (not showing up) and who are AWOL for several meetings. Kent indicted we are doing actual head count verses the paid meals. This infor-mation is needed to complete the Form 27 each month. Kent Dutrieux delivered the reprinted 2016 roster to BEC for distribution to members attending today’s lunch. Kent was informed of the death Wally Fenn’s wife . Joe Sauerland sent a sympathy card to Wally Fenn and family. Big SIR John Noren reported that there was a phone mes-sage left with Little SIR Jim Waltz by Whistlestop Official Yvonne Roberts expressing displeasure experienced by her two presenters at our last month (Feb.) luncheon. Ms Rob-erts asserted that the tone and content of the jokes at our meeting were considered inappropriate and the presenters were embarrassed when asked to come up with their own jokes. Big SIR John assured Ms. Roberts that our Executive Board has made it official policy that members are to avoid any jokes that could be considered in any way offensive and never require our guest speakers to produce a joke. Big SIR Noren apologized and assured her this would never happen again and that it is our wish that our relationship remain cordial. Big Sir John thanked everyone for coming to this month’s meeting at 10 am. A lot was discussed and now the follow up actions need to move forward.

What a treat Herbert Rowland was. Our

speaker this last luncheon was well versed in

his family history. He started his talk with

Bartolome Pacheco who arrived with the 1776

expedition which was led by Capt. Juan Bau-

tista de Anza. We followed his family history

through the original land grant of Agua Ca-

liente Rancho grant in Sonoma which Ignacio

Pacheco turned down as being unsuitable for

agriculture and in exchange accepted Rancho

San Jose in Marin County. This land grant

would become the city of Ignacio and later

incorporated into Novato. A small portion of

the grant has stayed in the family’s hands and

has become Pacheco Ranch Winery. Herbert

told of how parts of the family’s branches

came from San Jose and as far away as Chica-

go Illinois. The only complaint that we could

come up with Herbert was that his time was

way too short. He was rated as a 9.4

Bowling Update

Roger Burstrem

Bowling Chairman

Due to the urgency of meeting the im-

posed newsletter dead line of the 23rd,

and not having the secretary’s report from

week 31, I can only speculate that the

‘Strikers’ and ‘Perfect 10’

teams, 2 of our branch 68

teams, have a shot to win the

2nd half of the season and to

fight for the overall season

championship. They may very

well be going against each other in the posi-

tion round on April 29th to see who rolls for

the league championship on May 6th.

Week 27 produced a new record for the

number of members from our branch exceed-

ing the plus 20 pins over their 3-game aver-

age to be recognized in this

column; 14 of our 23 bowlers

present are to be congratulat-

ed with Rich Berkvam lead-

ing the charge with a 519 3-

game set for a +114, picking up the $20

jackpot; John Zeiter rolled a nice 541 set,

+75; Bob Hiday +68; Les Church with a nice

219, 567 set for a +60; Joe Grasso +48; Don

Gregory +45; Rich LeFrancois +33; Bill

Bunderson +25; 3 with 24 pins over: Steve

Medvic, Charles Salinas & Ray Crawford;

John Noren with a 3-game set of 515, +20.

Not in the jackpot but nice scores: Ray

Schmitt +57 & Eckart Sellinger +36. I led

the downside activity with a minus 48 pins.

Week 28 brought a reversal of for tunes in

that only three bowlers are on the tally sheet:

Jim Waltz won with a +68;

stealing it away from Bob

Sampson who rolled nice

games of 212, 202 on his

way to a 537, 3-game set for

a plus 66 pins; 3rd in this short list was Bill

Bunderson +43.

Week 29 generated another shor t list with

only four bowlers earning recognition: Win-

ning $20 for a 2nd time in three weeks is Rich

Berkvam with a 1 pin miss from hitting 500

(499) for a +91 pins over; Bob Hiday +28;

Eckart Sellinger +25. George Aster returned

to the alleys for the first time in many weeks

and shot 47 pins over, it ap-

pears that the hip is working

well. We are all happy to see

him back on the alleys.

Week 30 saw another close call for the

winner of a $21 jackpot. Ray Crawford

rolled 65 over to edge Charles Salinas by a

pin; George Aster came right back with +55;

Rich Berkvam continues to show improve-

ment with a solid performance +51; Kent

Dutrieux +44 and a 512; Bill Bunderson

+39; John Noren with a 536 3-game set for a

+38; Les Church with a 503 set and myself

with a 500 set.

As it stands right now, Rich Berkvam has

locked in that 3rd position for the branch roll

off (May 13) with a +40 3-game average

over 9 weeks. Week 30 also saw Charles

Salinas (+27) slide ahead of Ray Crawford

(+26) by 1 pin on the weekly 3-game over

average, for the 4th position on the branch

roll-off team with two weeks to go. Hope

you two bring your best games over the next

2 weeks.

Weeks 33 (May 6) & 34 (May 13) are also

sweepers weeks, were there is prize money

to be distributed by the league based on how

well you individually bowl scratch and with

your handicap; see everyone there and hope

you bowl your best.

We are now halfway through the spring ses-

sion with all teams working hard to perfect

their aim and distance skills. At this point

we find our two Monday teams, Sirs A & B

in the middle of their respective division ( B

in the upper and A in the lower). The

Wednesday boys on the China Campers

are doing great and are near the top of their

division with 8 wins as of 4/20. Our two stal-

warts on the Al Dente team (Ron G. & Bob

H.) are getting some hard fought experi-

ence but are near the bottom. Take cour-

age fellas, our I Mezzo Buoni team is in the

same spot on Thursday. Remember that

on Tues., Fri., and the weekends we have

open play and you can show up and prac-

tice for a couple of hours for a measly

$ 4 . Sir Bill Risch was seen on Sunday

morning, 4/24, putting down some very

good shots. I guess that's why the China

Campers are doing so well-practice makes

perfect. Keep up the good work guys and

remember, ---take the time to smell the ros-

es. There is a beautiful rose garden at the

courts which you will see if you sign up for

our Garden Party in June. Come and en-

joy.

Robert reported at the last luncheon on the

tennis front by pointing out that like the walk-

ing group there are also some very lovely

sights to see on the tennis courts. So don’t

forget to come out on Wednesday mornings

and catch the sights and maybe play a little

tennis also.

The Branch is trying to start a new activity.

We would like to do a day at Golden Gates

Fields at least once a quarter if not once a

month. There are already two All SIR Days

at the track (February and November). This

would involve 2 extra dates or several more

depending on involvement. Ron Gurich (415)

233-1584 or [email protected] will be

the contact point. We are also in contact with

the other Branches within Area 6 to see if we

can get a larger group. If your interested

A get well card was sent to Ray Schmitt, who

is on the road to recovery after a series of

health concerns. Sadly we lost two long

time SIR in April. Ted Little and Del King,

both members of our "over 90" group. have

passed away. Sympathy cards were sent to

their families. If you hear of a fellow SIR who

is ill, or could use cheering up, please let me

know and I'll send a card. Joe Sauerland

Well several new things have been in the pipeline. First the BEC is making a more concreted effort

to increase membership, lower AWOLs at Luncheon, instill more involvement from the membership

in running the Branch and getting us more involved with Area 6 activities . These will be long and

hard steps to returning “Our” Branch to a more healthy state. As your Newsletter Editor and Pub-

lisher, I am trying to improve how and where we get information to keep our membership up to

date. Starting with this newsletter you will find blue hyperlinks in a few places. If you get the elec-

tronic version of this newsletter those links will take you to either a webpage or start an email to the

addressed individual. Those same kind of links will be found in the monthly Luncheon Reminder

letters that you will be receiving a week before each luncheon. This way it will just be a click away to

tell those in charge if you’re going to be missing a meeting, needing an alternative lunch menu or

bringing a guest. With each passing Newsletter I hope to improve my skills in making this a more

informative read and I will also be improving the website to be an information Bridge between each

newsletter. I’m still looking for member stories or travels, so if you know of a good one or just enjoy

telling a tale please forward it to me so that I can continue improving this publication. Until next

time.
