Big SIR - Al Edwards (916) 847-5582

We had Tony Basile and Roman at our demonstration

at the February meeting. I wanted to add that Tony, by

trade, is actually a equine dentist. So I'm not sure what

he does for work and what he does for fun except that

he is also an accomplished ball room dancer.

The March meeting has been cancelled to protect our

members from catching the Covid-19 illness. We were

scheduled to have Officer Dave Armstrong of the Cali-

fornia Highway Patrol present a condensed version of

the "Age Well, Drive Smart" program which familiarizes

senior drivers with current and new driving laws as well

as safe driving practices. We hope to have him sched-

uled again for a later luncheon.

Jerry Thomas, Br 49 Treasurer

I attended the State Town Hall meeting in

Yuba City chaired by Ed Benson, SIR President.

There were three main subjects that were dis-

cussed that I would like to bring to Branch 49 members.

BRANDING - Since it is no longer a requirement for mem-

bers to be retired we have been rebranded as just SIR,

Social Activities for Men, not Sons in Retirement

MISSION STATEMENT- The mission of SIR is to en-

hance the lives of our members through fun activities,

luncheons, and events while making Friends for Life.

RECRUTMENT- Our membership continues to decline. The

only way SIR will survive is by the present membership

actively recruiting new members. We should all think of

ways we can attract new members. The two main reasons

men join SIR are for specific activities and social contact.

If anyone has ideas for new activities;

feel free to bring them to my attention.

Big SIR— Al Edwards

Bill Cobb recently had spinal surgery, and the recovery

did not go well. He came home from the hospital, and a

day or two later, fell and could not get up. He was

taken back to the hospital, and subsequently moved to

Manor Care Rehab hospital in Citrus Heights at Bird-

cage and Uplands. His wife told me he will be there for

a week or more, is about to start physical therapy.

Charley Novello is home, being quiet, goes to the Doc-

tor next week and hopes to be able to start physical

therapy at that time.

Bud Powers and his wife Bernie have moved to the

Stock Ranch Retirement community in Citrus Heights.

Both have had multiple medical problems recently, and

decided that they could not manage their house any

longer. I visited Bud and Bernie last week, and they

seem content to be in a safe and comfortable place.

Paul Kuzmich suffered a small setback in his recovery

when the latest scan revealed that one of the cancer-

ous nodules on his lung had increased in size. He will

resume chemo, and meanwhile continues to live his life,

planning a fishing trip to Reno to pursue the wily trout.

Dan Belsito, who fell on the golf course a couple of

months ago remains sidelined. The workup of his injury

revealed a cardiac problem, and he will have a heart

valve replaced as soon as he can stand the surgery.

Herb Wilstatter has died. He passed away in mid-

February. I have not been able to get any further in-

formation regarding services.

Bob Garcia is taking a break from SIR to be with his

wife, who suffered a massive stroke a couple of years

ago, and after failing to recover in a meaningful way,

has decided to discontinue all medications and let na-

ture take its course. I offer Bob and Donna my

prayers, and I know that all of us here do as well.

There are few happy exits from life.

Library Problem: SIRS Book Exchange. As many of you

know, after a book sits in the exchange with no action af-

ter 3 luncheons, we donate the book{s} to the Folsom Li-

brary. Thus we have a PROBLEM: our available books for

the exchange has now reached a very low inventory.

WHAT TO DO?

The exchange needs donations. Thus please check your

closets, under the bed, your family, friends, etc. and bring

what you uncover to our next SIRS luncheon. Specifically

we prefer recently published (past decade) fiction

(prominent authors preferred) books but will also welcome

non-fiction books.

Your donations will be appreciated by

our SIRS many readers.

REMEMBER THAT READING HELPS KEEP THE BRAIN

CELLS ALIVE AND WELL AS WE ENTER OUR

TWILIGHT YEARS!

Best regards, Marshall

The winter season finally has ended. It seemed that

even though we had a very wet winter last year that we

had more good days then we had this year. Virtually every

week had something different going on: Rain, fog, mud,

wind. And now the first two weeks of the summer season

have been plagued by high winds.

The first tournament of the year

was held at Timber Creek.

Don Fuller was low gross with an 86 won the A

flight.

Ron Peters won the B flight with a net 72.

Ed Puchi won the C flight with a net 74.

Our Kickoff luncheon at Cattlemen’s was very popular.

The food was great and the service terrific.

Our first tournament in March was at Empire Ranch.

Once again it was very windy. It made for a very challeng-

ing day. For the most part, pace of play was good.

Tom Coultas won the A flight with low gross

score of 82 and net 68.

Gary Veffredo won the B flight with a net 68.

Steve Sims won the C flight with a net 68.

Jon Hillegeist won the D flight with a net 69.
