sip trunking - aspire technology solutions
TRANSCRIPT
In this whitepaper you will:
• Meet John, the finance director at a multi site facilities management firm
• See how he attempts to boost profitability and improve telephony performance
• Consider the options open to John, and how they fit into his objectives
• Learn how SIP Trunking can play an important role in meeting those objectives.
TThis is a non technical guide designed to be read by IT and Finance Managers, who have specific business
objectives to achieve. You will likely be operating an ISDN circuit, and may have considered the benefits of
SIP Trunking. Our guide should help to provide intelligence ahead of achieving your own strategic goals.

Infrastructure
Meet John...John is the Finance Director of a North East based facilities management business which has a national client base.
The business is growing year on year, with its headcount growing by 15% per annum. As a result, John is
undertaking a strategic review of all business contracts and costs in order to boost profitability.
JohnJohn is currently reviewing his business telephony, lines and calls contracts. As a business which relies
heavily on its phone system to communicate with both customers and staff, changing the telephony
contract has always been something John’s been cautious of - using the mind-set of “if it isn’t broke, don’t
fix it.”
He currently has a legacy ISDN30 system in place across the business, and commends the resilience it
offers.
InternetInternet connectivity is supplied via a 100mb leased line, and John is vaguely aware of the benefits he
could see from upgrading his ISDN30 to SIP Trunking. But with cost savings and resilience as his key
strategic objectives, what options are available to him?

The Options
Maintain existing contractsJohnJohn could continue to operate his existing legacy ISDN30 system with his current
provider. This is the simplest option, and one which provides the sole benefit of
continuation. John is aware that BT will be switching off their Public Switched
Telephony Network in 2025. He realises that whilst he can maintain his current
infrastructure in the short term, he does know that he will need to switch to an
internet based communications system before that 2025 deadline. Whilst
maintaining the existing contract does give John the same level of resilience he’s
previouslypreviously enjoyed, he is very unlikely to deliver any form of cost saving to the
business.
Change ISDN30 ProvidersNot all ISDN30 providers are the same, and subsequently, not all charges are the
same. John could switch providers, and continue on his resilient ISDN30 set up,
whilst also achieving a cost saving for the business. At Aspire for example, a client
will typically realise around a 35% cost saving from switching to our ISDN30.
Switch to SIP TrunkingSIP Trunking is a method by which business phone systems can operate using an
internet connection instead of a traditional phone line. John is vaguely aware of the
benefits available via SIP Trunking, which include reduced telephony costs, (as
much as 80%) increased resilience and scalability. On the face of it, this looks to be
the obvious move, and one which would achieve both of his strategic objectives.

Switching to SIP Trunking:Realising John’s Strategic Objectives
Reduce CostsSIPSIP Trunking via Aspire can save up to 80% versus an ISDN30 setup. In John’s case,
the business already operates a dedicated internet connection via 100mb leased
line, and a modern Mitel phone system. This is an ideal combination for operating
SIP Trunks, and so John should realise an impressive cost reduction almost
immediately.
IfIf a business operates an older analogue or digital phone system it is recommended
that this is upgraded before switching to SIP Trunking. This will require investment.
Similarly, to achieve the optimum level of resilience and to guarantee excellent call
quality it is recommended that a business operates via a dedicated internet
connection with the required amount of bandwidth available at all times.
Increase ResilienceWhenWhen correctly configured, SIP Trunking offers far more resilience than ISDN. SIP
Trunking is reliant on connectivity. As previously mentioned a dedicated leased line
or EFM connection is our recommended set up. A slow or poor broadband
connection can cause call quality issues. In John’s case however, he is already
operating the recommended connections, and so he will benefit from excellent call
quality and resilience.
OneOne of the other ways in which SIP Trunking delivers added resilience is via it’s
simplicity in the event of a disaster. With SIP it is incredibly easy to move or divert
fixed lines anywhere you need them to go, such as to back up lines or mobiles.

Switching to SIP Trunking:Additional Benefits
ProductivitySIP Trunking can bring with it a number of productivity benefits including call management and online
portals, as well as unified communications integration (able to support voice calls, instant messaging,
video conferencing, and call recording across the business).
ScalabilityScalabilitySIP Trunking offers the freedom to scale up (or down) your business without the added infrastructure
expenditure. SIP allows an organisation to set up the connections it needs, as and when it is needed.
This makes planning for any peak periods simple and straightforward. In a practical sense, an ISDN30
circuit can only cope with 30 calls at a time, whilst SIP trunking can accommodate 1000s of calls at a
time.
Future ProofingBBT are due to switch off their Public Switched Telephony Network in 2025. By switching to SIP
trunking, you’re freeing the business from the deadline. If at some stage the business was to expand
and move premises, it can also retain its existing telephone number, unlike with ISDN.
