The maths balance in a Singapore classroom is used with a teacher-created equation board to help first graders master the concept of the equal sign. Students who do not receive high-quality instruction often perceives the equal sign as a signal to give an answer and make mistakes such as 4 + 3 = 7 + 5.

Summary
Singapore Math uses the CPA Approach derived from
the Bruner’s theory of representations of
mathematical ideas. Singapore Math does not
focus on computations per se. In fact mathematics is
seen as ‘an excellent vehicle for the
development and improvement of a person’s intellectual competence”.

Looking Forward
Two other major theories are fundamental to
Singapore Math – Dienes’ Theory and Skemp’s
Theory. These will be dealt with in the next session on
