Urban Ecology for PAssion Wave @ Marina Bay East Gardens; the 8th outdoor sports recreational facility by the Peoples’ Association and Platinum Green Mark Award achiever SINGAPORE- Cultivating serenity through the picturesque landscapes and views of the Marina Bay skyline from the Bay East Gardens, enthusiasts can now kayak or dragonboat amidst the Marina Reservoir. With teeming greenery and designed for an air of relaxed elegance, this 4000sq.m facility is built with minimal intrusion of forestry.

Biodiversity retention and Other Features- Trees are conserved and relocated careful, planned selection of plants were chosen to replace biodiversity interception. - Green roof to transform bare monotonous surfaces into green vegetated roof systems.- Rainwater harvesting to irrigate building plants and installation of water saving ttings help cut back water usage by 50%. - Embodiment of energy saving concepts help reduce consumption by 30%.

LEED Commer-cial InteriorNewly relocated SHELL oce earns the LEED Commercial Interior Certication

SINGAPORE- Relocated to the Metropolis Tower in Buona Vista, the new oce was tted to promote healthful, durable, aordable, and environmentally sound practices in tenant space design and construc-tion.

Cleaner indoor air quality can be realized by simply using low VOC building materials. Low levels of VOC provide for a cleaner and health-ier environment for the new oce space.

MALAYSIA- Nestled between Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, Bukit Bintang, the Vida Bukit Ceylon SoLo by Spritzer is within an abundance of basic, shopping and entertainment services.

VIDA Bukit Ceylon High rise Embraces Eco SoLo (Small Oce, Livable Oce) Concept

Redeveloping urban areas with sustainability strategies will not only reduce the carbon footprint of occupants, but promote energy eeciency and water conservation as well.

Solar panels are commonly used in Europe and North America, with Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea increasingly scaling

up installations with smaller planned increases. Utilising this form of green energy is still new in Malaysia and the installation of solar panels for the SoLo will inuence other new establishments under Developer, Spritzer to do the same.

Vida Bukit Ceylon SoLo uses wood species and products that comply with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Malaysia Timber Certica-tion (MTCC) as its initiative to source for ethical and responsibly grown and harvested materials and resources. Most of the building materials are also sourced regionally to reduce carbon emissions from transpor-tation.

While occupants enjoy the breathtaking skyline of Kuala Lumpur through the ceiling to wall windows, day lighting would also be optimised to not only save energy from articial lighting, but illuminate spaces for a comfortable ambience as well.

WEIL Hotel Ipoh’s First Green Sojourn

Environmental Awards for Organizations

MALAYSIA- The Weil Hotel was built on and around an abandoned 7 storey structure with 8 new stories added. Spanning across 580.000 sq.ft., the Weil Hotel and Ipoh Town Club will incorporate the following environmental design:

- 35% savings in water and energy consumption through installation of ecient water and electrical ttings.

- Conventional building materials substituted with light structure such as dry wall and steel to lower material consumption of the building.

- Chillers represent the single largest electrical load in most facilities. Apart from achieving 30% in energy savings, hot water is able to be generated through waste heat from the chiller.

- Walls are insulated with high visible light transmittance performance glazing and dual core walls to minimise heat absorption through walls, thus lowering cooling requirements.

- Waste hauling is a huge expense for hotels. Weil Hotel aims to reshape the norms of hotel operations and part of the innovation sustainability model will include recycling food waste into compost to be fertilised for the hotel’s landscaping as well as for its own botanical garden.

EcoSky; Retail, Oce, Residential Luxury Eco Escape Above it AllMALAYSIA- Located in the vibrant Kuala Lumpur suburb of Taman Wahyu, EcoSky has been designed as a 360 lifestyle hub for the upwardly mobile community.

The mixed-use development of professional, sophisticated oces, retail spaces to fulll lifestyle needs and 3 towers of high rise residen-tial oerings has been awarded the dual certication of Green Mark and LEED by the Building and Construsction Authority, Singapore and the U.S Green Building Council respectively.

By optimising natural daylighting in staircases, lift lobbies, corridors as well are designed to not only reduce energy consumption, but improve air quality and occupant comfort as well.

The conceptualisation of the rainwater harvesting system will assist

in water conservation as water captured in tanks on each tower is used for landscape irrigation.

Horticulture waste generated onsite such as fallen leaves and dry grass will also be used to fertilise the landscape within the complex.

Designed along the principles of sustainable building, residents would be able to enjoy more discerning, eco-councious lifestyles.

NHC Place; The First Green Building in TanzaniaEstablishing Green and Safe Standards in Construction

EAST AFRICA- There exist the misconception that going green by switching from conventional energy and water systems to more ecient ones would incur a tremendous amount of incremental cost. While many believe in the idea of sustainability, cost may sometimes be of hindrance.

The National Housing Corporation (NHC), which is under the Ministry of Housing and Settlements in Tanzania managed to strive in both aspects; going green without any incremental cost.

Intial designs for NHC Place were re-evaluated and altered to devise an approach that is holistic. Systems are interdependent to t economic, social and ecological needs and by controlling mechanisms, a sense of wholeness is principally established.

A holistic approach to system design will have all parties ( building owner, architects and builders e.t.c) to communicate their plans. This allows for the detection of incompatible designs and elements in its early stages.

Green Features of the Building: - Photovoltaic of 4KWP are installed to service all public and common areas.- Turning long facades toward the direction of prevailing breezes to enhance the cooling eect of natural ventilation.- Improved glass facade for better insulating properties, sieve out uncomfortable glare whilst optimizing day lighting. - Location sensors to optimise controlability. - Ecient HVAC systems to reduce energy consumption by 30%. - Water saving ttings resulting in savings of 50%. - Building user guide to encourage good practices among employ-ees. - Green transportation options. - Plants are 100% irrigated by water collected through the concep-tualisation of the rainwater harvesting system. - Sustainable native landscaping with draught tolerant plants.- Acoustic comfort to manage noise controls in the oce.- Green canopies to reduce heat island eect and moderate building temperatures.

By initiating our own green iconic building for NHC, we will be setting the benchmark for future green development and will make a significant statement for the country about our commitment to the environment.

Apart from optimising energy and water eciency, particular focus on the selection of materials and resources to reduce the district’s environ-mental impact. Sta also continue to keep up the good work by reducing and recycling waste.

An enhanced building energy commissioning system will take place 10 months after substantial project completion. The performance testing that will be conducted will check whether the main system is operating as eciently as promised. Education will also be carried out for the building maintenance team and a system manual is being produced for future operation sta. Having a well-rounded approach toward sustainability solutions has helped HP achieve the LEED Silver as well as Green Mark Certication.

Energy- Motion sensors along corridors, staircases and toilets and implemen-tation of timer system to ensure all lights will be switched o between 11pm and 5am.- Energy ecient LED lighting 29.3% better than ASHRAE standard 90.1.- Energy modelled savings of 18.1%-35% of energy usage is being oset against annual energy consump-tion.

SINGAPORE- The newly built Becton Dickinson facility in Singapore has achieved the Green Mark Certication as well as the LEED Silver Award.

The facility is designed to reduce its potable water consumption signicantly; by 80%. Receiving its supply of non-potable water via a separate distribution channel, direct from the Public Utility Board, the use of NeWater in industrial application frees up potable water for domestic consumption.

An intensive multiple barrier process safeguards the purity of reclaimed water and its quality consistently exceeds requirements set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The application of NeWater in the BD Building system ensures that water conservation is sustainably practiced.

Signicant water savings were also congured with the installation of water ecient ttings; especially the waterless urinal. Another notable green feature of the BD Building would be the installation of horizontal and vertical external shades to prevent the heat from the sun from entering the space, thus lessening cooling requirements.

The modern and open oce design ensures that comfortable levels of day lighting will be captured to illuminate the space naturally and this helps reduce articial lighting.

The district cooling also connects the building to the existing chiller water plant, thus increasing eciency. This, coupled with the installation of T5 lighting as well as motion and automated sensors which helps keep all lights shut between 11pm and 5am, totals up energy savings to 40%.

How to design for natural ventilation in warm, humid climates?

When designing for natural ventilation, CFD takes wind speed and prevailing wind directions during the dierent months of the year into account for its simulation.

The simulation of natural ventilation takes advantage of both wind and buoyancy in

in order to drive fresh air through a building.

Airow modelling method that can be used to predict airow and heat transfer to create a thermally-comfortable, healthy and energy ecient space.

Having a well-rounded approach toward sustainability solutions has helped HP achieve the LEED Silver Award as well as Green Mark Certication.

plants were selected as they thrive in local conditions. The installa-tion of the green walls will also help reduce the heat build up as well as bring a more artful and calming ambience to the urban environ-ment as well.

With an emphasis on community engagement and green knowledge expansion, a green corner will be set up to educate residents on the types of recyclables to be deposited at the bins and what the various recycling logos mean.

A unique green feature of the CC will be its compost programme. Every day last year, each person in Singapore wasted an equivalent of one packet of economy rice or nasi padang. All of this added up to an astounding record of 769,000 tonnes- the weight of about 1,420 fully loaded Airbus A-380s of food waste.

Singaporeans love their food. However, the amounts of food being wasted is scaling up each year. The implementation of a composting programme to recycle unwanted food scraps/ waste into rich nutrient soil for plants.

Due for completion in the rst half of 2015, this unique CC is driven to revive and strengthen community togetherness through cultural preservation as well as cultivate eco-consciousness amongst residents and visitors.

Kigamboni Housing EstateSecond Aordable Housing in the World to be Certied Green

EAST AFRICA, TANZANIA- Dar es Salaam is a city where people dream, hope and work towards better opportunities. Many have migrate to the city, but nd it dicult to aord proper homes, thus the congregation of poor, unplanned settlements which account for 70% of the city’s population.

The passive design was conceptualised- reducing the consumption of energy without the compromise of comfort or performance.

By reducing the east-west facade, exposure to the sun is reduced and homes have greater access to favourable breezes. Day lighting brings about warmth and creates an inviting ambience. Draught tolerant plants were also included as part of its native landscaping.

Like most developing countries, Tanzania faces a water issue, with water leakages being a discouraging problem. With the implemen-tation of the community rainwater harversting system, access to clean potable water will be improved. Residents will no longer need to travel to get their supply of clean water.

Making up the highest surface area, walls have a great impct on thermal mass. Houses in Kigamboni were built to be adjointed in pairs and the structure is made from hydro-foam and concrete with high levels of recycled content. Small openings were also strategi-cally located to help hot air escape and increase internal ow.

synonymous to the Changi Airport signature. Smaller petal shaped skylights would also add on to daylighting.

Local culture and heritage-theme features will also be infused into the design with old Peranakan shophouses as facades of the retail stores.

In keeping up with Changi Airport’s passenger centric model, T4 will also boast breakthrough features to raise levels of productivity with a range of self- service options where passengers can expect to whizz through touchpoints with ease.

With a gross oor area of about 195,000sq.m – or about 27 football pitches, the Terminal will facilitate a planned annual capacity of 16 million passenger movements and this will bring Changi Airport’s total annual passenger to 82 million.

With T4, we are rethinking travel, exploring how key operational functions can be designed differently to optimise process flow, interior space, as well as manpower resources. We are also challenging ourselves to deliver an even higher level of the Changi Experience, by creating a boutique ambience and reflecting thought-fulness for our passengers through the details in our design. In the aspects of architecture, layout and technology, we have future-proofed the terminal so that it can adjust to changing requirements of the industry.

SINGAPORE- Winning the BCA Green Mark Award for the rst time is the new 1.2 billion, 800-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine plant on Jurong Island by PacicLight Power.

Featured on The Straits Times on the 23rd of May 2014, the PacicLight Power Plant is the rst and only power plant on Jurong Island to be Green Mark certied. Not only was careful consideration given to ensure that design requirements met Green Mark standards, other environ-mental standards including the World Bank emission standards were prioritised as well.

Achieving the certication didn’t come easy. In order to achieve the award, all systems, which has already been installed had to be analysed and Environmental Sustainability Consultant, GreenA, put together proposals to ensure that the entire district operates in an environmen-tally sound manner. The plant uses NEWater as much as possible in its operations, reducing the need to further process the water or buying alternative resources.

SINGAPORE- Located in the developed industrial area of Singapore, the new HP facility takes advantage of utilities already in place such as the separate channel provided by the Public Utilities Board for a direct supply of non potable water.

The new HP building is projected to use 78.7% less potable water than a comparable non green building. For energy consumption, 35% of energy usage for the HP building is being oset against total energy consumed.

To cut back on materials and resources, the builders recycled at least 75% of the deconstruction and construction waste from the site. Furniture from an previous HP oce were also reused for its t-out. Centering importance around occupant health as well as comfort, an emphasis was given to indoor air quality.

Low VOC materials are used and an indoor air monitoring system is implemented. The production area of the facility also supplies 100% fresh air. After a year, a verication survey will be conducted to measure whether occupants are satised with thermal comfort levels. Should 20% of the occupants feel dissatised, a corrective action plan will take place to ensure that comfortable temperatures and relative humidity are maintained.

SINGAPORE- The Ci Yuan Community Centre (CYCC) located at Hougang Avenue 9 is the rst community centre in Singapore to adopt the design and build concept, enabling the CC to desire on what should be housed in it.

Bringing back the vibrant Singaporean communal dining experience which has been partly lost since 1986 after the Government stopped building hawker centres, the Ci Yuan Community Centre will have 40 stalls serving a variety of well loved local delicacies operating under a taller-than-normal, two storey high ceiling to ensure a light and airy feel even when every of the 640 seats are taken.

A 500 seat performing centre aimed to cultivate arts and cultural interests among residents, a family medicine centre as well as a senior care would be amongst the facilities reserved for this CC.

The embodiment energy concepts reduces the consumption by 30% through good thermal performance and heat gain minimisation. Rainwater harvesting and water conservation practices and tting installations help which cut back water usage by 50%.

The CC will be covered and sprawling with lush greenery. Native

supplying cool air at the bottom. Apart from window typologies, installation of four wind tunnels 26 meters high supports evapora-tive cooling in humid Kuala Lumpur, assisted with mechanical ventilation, ensures thermal comfort, when during full occupancy of the gym. For the classrooms, long horizontal strip windows will help ventilate the space more evenly.

Fresh air is driven through the building, creating healthier, more ambient spaces for everyone. According to a study conducted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, student performance can increase by 5-10% with the supply of more fresh air which natural ventilation provides for free.

Without the compromise on occupant and thermal comfort, the use of natural elements into sustainable systems signicantly reduces energy bills as well as carbon emissions.

It is best to integrate these systems at the earliest possible stage. However, natural ventilation can be also be introduced as part of a retrotting project for existing buildings.

MALAYSIA- Today, the LFKL (Lycee Francais de Kuala Lumpur) accommodates around 850 students from the kindergarten to Terminale. These numbers continue to grow by 12% each year. The opening of the French/English stream at the start of 2011 attracted a foreign public which represented nearly 24% of total number of students in September 2011. To extend the school’s capacity to 1500, a modern and functional extension of the site will be built, under the code name LFKL 2020.

With continued urbanization, preservation on natural resources is implicated. Natural ventilation is increasingly being used in urbanized buildings to minimize the consumption of non-renewable energy and the reliance of active means for environmental control.

Although the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is commonly associated with aircraft and vehicles, it is fast in nding a home in building sciences. Conceptualizing air ow modelling for green building helps optimize HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) designs and performance is foreseen before adoption or execution of systems; allowing proposals for awless and productive designing most vital for sustainability improvements.

Added Facilities and Amenities The present LFKL was constructed on a land area of 13 351 m2 with a built up area of 6, 654m2. Located at the compound of the building, the extension will feature a central building; encompassing a gymnasium, library as well as an exam hall and is surrounded by 2 four storey classroom buildings.

Thermal comfort in humid Malaysia Kuala Lumpur experiences dierent directions of prevailing winds depending on month, therefore, design needs to be optimized to adapt to the current winds throughout the year.

Large, tall entrances at the gym as well as small openings at the top of the building helps pull hot air out the top of the room while

Prevailing Wind

Kuala Lumpur has dierent directions of prevailing winds depending on the month. An external CFD simulation was conducted to study the surrounding wind speed. The design has optimized the best prevailing wind possible for the site along with its openings. The gym, in which proper ventilation is important due to its function, is right on the path of the prevailing winds for every months of the year.

Wind Towers

Wind tunnels are designed for a specic purpose and speed range. The installation of four wind tunnels 26 meters high supports evaporative cooling for the building.

Roof Ventilator

A roof ventilator helps create a depression to suck the hot air out of the space. It can also help extend the life of a commercial or industrial building by providing proper airow.

MALAYSIA- A mixed development in Puteri Harbour undergoes Green Mark Certication. The development- a mix of residential, oce as well as retail space incorporates the following green building innovations:

Site Planning and Building Orientation The orientation of a building determines the level of ventilation, insulation, solar shading as well as day lighting . With feel like temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius in Kuala Lumpur, heat may sometimes be unforgiving. By minimizing the East-West façade, exposure to the sun is reduced.

Building Vegetation and Green Roof The rapid urbanisation around the globe during the last ve decades has come at a heavy price to the environment, with rising air pollution, the worsening heat-island eect, and losses of biodiversity and green spaces.

Building -integrated vegetation is a simple and eective way to reduce urban heat islands. Planting deciduous trees is typically most eective for cooling a building, especially if they shade windows and parts of the building.

Green roofs will help transform grainy, bare monotonous concrete surfaces into green vegetated roof systems creates relief and a natural view. Green roofs absorb, evaporate, inltrate rainwater as well as reduces heat transfer; thus expanding the usefulness of the building.

GreenA Consultants has been commissioned by the Singapore Prison Services to conduct a desk study to analyze the feasibility as well as provide recommendations for the Singapore Changi Prison to go green.

Rehabilitation, as opposed to penal sentences. That was the philoso-phy behind the Singapore Changi Prison (SCP) since the start of its operations in 1936.

Social sustainability, bears a deeper signicance for the Singapore Prison Services. By reaping the benets from caring for the environ-ment, the Singapore Prison Service is able to cut back on utility and reallocate funds toward rehabilitation purposes.

Cutting back more than $78,000 every year through the utilization of alternative water resources alone, there is no question why the SPS

has advocated the concept of a ‘green’ prison into its organizational culture. The SCP will also be the rst prison to achieve a Green Accreditation Award in Asia.

Sustainability has become increasingly critical with the surge of inmates (from 12,000 to 23,000) coming in from the dierent prisons around Singapore. The SPC will serve as the central prison in Singapore and is gunning for the Green Mark Award under residential district.

Minimizing Cut and Fill Earthworks Much of earthworks involves machine excavation and ll or backll. This development minimizes cut and ll of earthworks by repurpos-ing them or sending them out to neighbouring development which needs them.

Green and Blue Spaces for the Public The development will truly be a modern nature haven with the innovation of connecting blue and green spaces. The development aims to reintroduce the natural water cycle into urban environments and integrate lush greenery to welcome biodiversity. Blue and green spaces help mitigate against future climate change, while minimis-ing environmental degradation and improving aesthetic and recreational appeal of the development.

SINGAPORE- YTL Construction bagged the Excellent Accolade for the Green and Gracious Builder Award (GGBA) 2014; an award recognising progressive builders who take the eort to address environmental and public concerns arising from construction works and serves to develop a more positive image of the industry over time.

Given the urban challenge of high visibility and impact construc-tion in Singapore, it has become more important for builders to adopt ‘friendlier’ and more gracious construction practices to minimise the impact. YTL Construction used the top-down construction method to enhance productivity and reduce noise and dust generated by construction works and also conserved trees on site.
