Pedone & Montgomery Earn Cornhuskers Futurity titlesBy tanya Randall Veteran futurity trainers and competitors Ryann Pedone and Jolene Montgomery took top honors at Marlene McGaughey’s Cornhusker Breeders & Open Futurities, held in Broken Bow, Neb. Pedone, Sunset, Texas, rode Double O Daryll, recently purchased by Sean and Stephanie Ashley, to a $5,098 victory in the $12,000-added Breeders Futurity. Montgomery, Purdon, Texas, guided Imafrenchprincess (“Baby Flash”), owned by Matt and Bendi Dunn, to the $4,000-added Open Futurity Championship, worth $3,091.

Breeders Futurity Pedone and Daryll, a 4-year-old gelding by BHR Frenchies Socks out of Debbys Royal Jet, by A Royal Jet, also earned Reserve Cham-pion honors in the Open Futurity for an additional $2,976. Added to their open carryover earnings, the duo hauled $8,446 home from Broken Bow. “I felt like he would place, but really didn’t expect him to win it,” said Pedone of Daryll’s performance. “He had the summer off and brought him back and made a couple of runs on him. He felt like he had matured quite a bit. It used to be if the ground was a little deep or something, he wouldn’t get gritty; he’d be a little timid. But, he’s been getting really solid.” She said the gray gelding reminds her of another BHR Frenchies Socks that she rode—Kiss This Guy (“Tyson”). “He reminded me a little bit of Tyson, not necessarily his style, but he really came on in the fall,” she explained. “He had some shiny moments in the spring, but in the fall, he came into his own. This horse seems to be the same way. He had some shiny moments this spring, making it back at Diamonds & Dirt, but he’s really gotten solid.” PedoneandDaryllplacedfifthinthefirstgoandwonthesecondgo of the Breeders Futurity to take the average. “Thefirstrunhewentinthereandranalow.8,”saidPedone.“Itwasasolidrun.Hekindof stumbledalittleatthefirst,notreallybad, but a little bit. The second day—I don’t really get that nervous on him because I always expect him to be solid—he went in there and ran a .6. I wasn’t really expecting that. I was really happy.” Pedone wanted to thank her pit crew, which includes Celsey Rater, who helps her at the events, Kim Buckman and Raney Nel-son, who look after her horses while she’s on the road, her dad Lee Pedone, her veterinarians Dr. Don Lee and Dr. Cliff Honnas, her farrier Sid Myers, her personal trainer Debbie Crall and her sponsor Classic Equine via Jeye Johnson. She also wanted to give thanks to the event producer. “I’d like to thank Marlene for putting on that futurity,” she said.

2015 Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Induction Class

It was an emotional day at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, and for good reason. Mark Garrett - the 1996 bareback riding world champion - summed up the day’s festivities in his speech by saying, “I can’t imagine life without rodeo; it taught me so much about life.” Garrett was one of 10 new inductees, joined by World Cham-pion Cowboys Tom Nesmith, Bob Wegner and Harry Charters, along with rodeo notable Jack Hannum, the Hendricks Brothers specialty act, four-time team roping head horse of the year Precious Speck (Walt) and the rodeo committees from the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo and Iowa’s Championship Rodeo (Sidney). Garrett, 49, joined his brother - four-time World Champion Bareback Rider Marvin Garrett (1988-89, 1994-95) - in the Hall of Fame, and not only thanked his brother for his success in the rodeo arena, but also friends and traveling partners Ken Lensegrav and LarrySandvick.Allfourmenfinishedinthetopfiveof thebare-back riding world standings in 1996. Nesmith, of Bethel, Okla., was a soft-spoken cowboy whose best events were steer wrestling and calf roping. He captured the 1962 all-around and steer wrestling world championships. “My dad was so quiet, but he would have loved this,” said Janette Nesmith-Kelly, Tom’s daughter. “He would be so honored, and he had so many friends come to this induction. He had friends come from all around the country for this, and that is so special.”Nesmith died of a heart attack on Oct. 16, 1972, at the age of 37. In an era full of Hall of Fame bull riders, Wegner made a name for himself. Overan11-yearspanfrom1956-1966,Wegnerfinishedamongthetopfivebullridersintheworldstandings10times,earningaworld championship in 1964 and four reserve world championships (1958-59, 1961, 1966). He twice won the NFR average title (1964, 1966). Unlike most PRCA cowboys - who start their careers in their teens - Harry Charters took an unconventional path to rodeo.Although Charters did not buy his RCA permit until 1958, at the relatively advanced age of 33, he managed to compete at an elite level for a decade. He won his only world championship as a rookie steerwrestlerin1959andwentontoputnineNFRqualificationson his career resume - six in bulldogging and three in tie-down rop-ing. The Hall of Fame ceremony included two current WNFR cow-boys giving emotional speeches on behalf of inductees. Steer wrestler Olin Hannum spoke for himself and his four siblings on behalf of their father, the late Jack Hannum, while team roper Travis Tryan spoke about his horse, Precious Spec (Walt).JackHannumwasafive-timequalifierfortheNationalFinals

Rodeo and a longtime administrator with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Joining Olin on stage were his brother, Jake, a 2007 WNFR tie-down roper, and their sisters, Amee, Emily and Jane. Tryan said before his induction speech for Walt that he hoped he wouldn’t cry, but the emotion came out as he recalled the 10-year stretch that he had with the horse. “He brought me to the place I needed to be before I was even ready,”Tryansaidof hisfirstof nineWNFRappearancesaboardthe horse in 2001. “This is like family going in. He was a huge part of my team, and helped me make my living.” Walt was voted the AQHA/PRCA Team Roping Heading Horse of the Year from 2007-09 and four times overall (also in 2003). He was also third in the balloting twice. The horse died April 24, 2010, of an aneurysm while warming up for morning slack at the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo. He was 20. The Hendricks Brothers - identical twins Byron and Lee - enter-tained rodeo audiences from the 1940s into the 1960s, with a variety of acts that included daredevil Roman riding, bridle-less jumps, dancing horses and dogs. The Flying Twin Act, with Byron and Lee riding Roman style, had each of them jumping their horses over an automobile in op-posite directions. It became their most famous stunt, but probably seemed easy for the brothers, who were both Army paratroopers during World War II. The Red Bluff Round-Up held its 94th annual event in April, and has become a must-compete destination for cowboys. “My great-grandfather, Claus Trede, was one of the 20 people whoputupthemoneyforourfirstRedBluff rodeo,andhe’dbesoproudof ourinductiontoday,”saidJohnTrede,firstvicepresidentof the Red Bluff Round-Up committee. Iowa’s Championship Rodeo, named the PRCA Small Rodeo of the Year in 1997, celebrated its 91st anniversary in July. “This honor means so much to our town of 1,200 people,” said Lyle Tackett, vice president of the Iowa’s Championship Rodeo board. The Guymon Pioneer Days, the 2002 PRCA Large Rodeo of the Year, celebrated its 83rd annual event this year. “We truly believe it is absolutely phenomenal to win this honor,” said Jim Quimby, chairman of the Guymon Pioneer Days rodeo committee. ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of former contestants and rodeo experts. More than 150 individu-als are nominated each year and selection is based on contributions to the sport of professional rodeo in any one of seven categories: contestant, stock contractor, contract personnel, rodeo committees, livestock, media and notables/lifetime achievement. “It’s a smaller futurity, but it’s so nice and laid back. She’s so easy to work with.” Next for Pedone and Daryll will be this weekend’s Mega. They shouldfinishoutthefuturityyearwithJudLittle’sBarNothinBarrel Bash, the AQHA World Show, JB Quarter Horses Futurity and BFA World Championships. The Ashley’s 17-year-old daughter Erica will also ride Daryll at a few high school rodeos this fall as her main horse, Streakin Reba, recovers from injury. Open Futurity Montgomery didn’t have Open Champion Baby Flash back in her barn very long before their victorious runs in Broken Bow. “I’ve only had her back three weeks now,” said Montgomery. Baby Flash and her talented full sister Ima French Kiss both went home to the Dunn’s in Bismarck, Mo., for the summer after the Old Fort Days Futurity in May. “I’ve probably only got to ride her seven or eight times before I came. Bendi and Madison were riding her at home,butshe’snotsuperfityetbecauseshehasn’thadanyruns.” Also hampering Baby Flash’s return to competitive form was an injury to Montgomery at a barrel race in Hamilton, Texas. She was making a run on Lyca Rock, who also placed in both the Breeders and Open averages in Broken Bow, at Hamilton when her off billet broke during her run home. “I was just concentrating on running home and didn’t realize what had happened,” she said. “I hit the ground and got a major concussion. I was down for a few days.” Without out much saddle time before the futurity, Baby Flash was alittlesluggishonherfirstrunandclockedoutof themoneywitha 15.965. “Herfirstrun,sheworkednice,butitwaskindof average,”Montgomery said. “She just hadn’t run all summer. On her second run, I just asked her to move her feet a little bit more and kind of smooched her up, and she threw down and did her thing.”

Their second round winning 15.434 was enough to give them a .049 edge on Pedone and Daryll for the Open title. Montgomery, who is sponsored by Classic Equine, Horse Hair Analysis, Priefert and Chrome Girl Accessories, along with Joy Wargo, are presently laying over at Ashley Schafer’s in Wyoming before returning to Nebraska for the Triangle Cross Classic Futurity in McCook this weekend. Schafer’s baby is due tomorrow (August 19), but her fellow horse trainers are trying rather unsuccessfully as of this writing to expedite the process.

By tanya Randall Kylar Terlip had always done well at the State Fair Park in Okla-homa City, but she’d never actually “won” a race there. At the 17th Annual Summer Shootout, Terlip nearly won three division titles and took home $6,400. The high school sophomore from Frontenac, Kansas, won the 1D Shootout aboard recent purchase Wrangler Biankus (“Gunner”) and topped the 3D Shootout aboard Sun Frost Scooter. She hit a costly barrel with Leos Wimpy Playboy to have the fastest time in the 2D Shootout. “I’ve done really well at Oklahoma City, no matter what it was, but I’d never won anything,” said Terlip. “I was reserve in 2010 at Shootout,andIwasTop5or6in2011.Thiswasmyfirsttimetowin something.” Terlip, 15, had started school on Thursday, so her father made the four hour trip south with the horses. Since she was in the late draw, running in the wee hours of the night, Terlip was able to drive down after classes on Friday. “He was my last horse to run, draw 826, so very close to the end,” Terlip recalled of her run on Gunner. “He just made a really nice run. He’s really consistent. His run on Friday…I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” After winning the opening round, Terlip decided to rest the 14-year-old gelding for Sunday’s Shootout. Surprisingly, she said she doesn’t even really remember much of her championship run. “I remember he smoked 1st,” she said. “I normally whip him between the barrels, but my whip actually broke. At the third, I thought I’m not going to get by it, but he worked really good. He’s pretty honest. As long as you ride him square, he’s really easy to ride.” Gunner was bred by Bob and Kay Weeks, Northwest natives

who now reside in Elk City, Okla. He is by Our Hush Money, a son of Juno Dat Cash, out of Sister Ann Biankus, a daughter of the legendary Biankus. “Monica McClung bought him as a 2-year-old,” Terlip said. “Monica high school rodeoed on him and sold him in 2011, I think. Paige Jones had him and I bought at the end of April, right before the BBR (Finals).”

Her determination and perse-verance has put her and her trusty steed French First Watch, aka “Custer” 11th in the WPRA World Standings where she is most likelylookingatherfirsttriptothebigshowinVegasinDecember.Her win from the Champions Challenge in Cody, Wyoming this past weekend helped launch her 2015 earnings to $54,782.73! “Winning the Cody Champions Challenge was absolutely amaz-ing! The competition was stiff and I am so happy that we were able to get the win. The timing was impeccable because we really needed to win a big check to boost us farther into the top 15,” explained Welsh. Welsh piloted her partner “Custer” around the cloverleaf pattern in 17.50 seconds which took home the win as well as a nice check for $5,440. “Custer has been absolute blessing to me. He is by Frenchmans Guy and out of a daughter of Dash Ta Fame. I purchased him from my good friend Rachael Myllymaki two-and-a-half years ago. I am just so thankful that she sold him to me because he takes such great care of me and has helped me come back from dealing with cancer. He is very special to me and I am forever grateful for all that he has helped me accomplish.” Welsh was diagnosed with kidney cancer four years ago and after battling it out, she found “Custer” and made her way back to the rodeo trail and barrel racing. A dream year this year has made a lot of her lifelong dreams a reality and the biggest dream may be com-ing true in December when she runs down the alley at the Thomas & Mack. “We have had a phenomenal summer! Placing at and winning some of these big rodeos is something I never imagined I would be

doing. I am so happy to be out here and making clean runs that are in the money is just icing on the cake,” Welsh said. Sitting within the top 15 with less than two months left in the season, Welsh plans on using the same game plan she has used all year long. “I am taking it one day at a time and will continue to give it my

TheBibleisfilledwithreallifeanswerstoourreallifeprob-lems. I didn’t know this for a long time and I’m embarrassed by it. Like confrontation. I have never had a problem con-

fronting issues, I just didn’t know that there was a Godly way to do it. I’d just wade right in and try to bulldoze my way through. So what do we do if we have an issue with someone? In today’s world, a lot of people will get on facebook and all those other twittery things and let ‘er rip! BUT! In Matthew 18:15-16, it tells us how to confront a person. YOU GO TO THAT PERSON ONLY! I can think of one time in my life that someone came to me and told me that they didn’t like what I had done. It was startling! And refreshing! Wow! I actually got a chance to tell my side…to them….and we worked it out! And everyone in cyber-space didn’t need to get in on it. Isn’t that what we want?! Not necessarily!!!! Mostly what we want is to be right…at all costs…and to others’ detriment. I know people that look for an excuse to be offended and drama lives in their lives. It’s like a drug. You can’t be happy unless you are unhappy. Isn’t that twisted?

When we do things God’s way, great peace will come. You won’t be worrying stuff over in your head about who supposedly said what and what we read on facebook and what we think Susie and Sally said about us. (I just made up Susie and Sally!) You will have done what God told you and talked to the person, speaking the truth in love, and you get it settled. Forgiveness can be asked for and received (RIGHT?). You will have peace that you did it God’s way and no matter what the other person chooses, you are free! Free to concentrate and give your attention to the Blessing of the Lord on you and your house! It’s a much better place to be!
