Freshman Smokes ’em at College nFRBy Julie Mankin She’s only 19, but Timmi Ward of Riverside, Utah – aboard her 12-year-old ogre of a horse, “Smoke” – ran through the competi-tion on four runs in Casper, Wyo., to become the 2013 intercolle-giate national champion in barrel racing. The crowning event of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Asso-ciation is held annually in the Casper Events Center, where a tough run on the pattern is under 14 seconds. For Ward, the setup isn’t unlike the indoor pens she runs in all year in Utah and Idaho.A freshman at the College of Southern Idaho, Ward arrived as a CNFR rookie with her first run in slack scheduled for Monday. She got to town with her family on Thursday, rode her stout brown horse Smoke around Friday and Saturday, and worked him on the barrels Sunday. “I was really excited to go to the College Finals,” she said. “I was feeling pretty lucky. I knew I had a good horse that could go out and do something if I could make four clean runs. That’s what we were after.” Smoke is a “turny bugger” that really wants to hug a barrel, so Ward typically does a lot of pattern work to keep him free. She had him so free for round one that he actually ran past the first barrel, giving her a 14.3 (it placed fourth). “He did exactly what we did in practice, so that was rider error,” she said. “I couldn’t blame him. I was just happy I made it around my first three barrels!” Her second run Tuesday in slack improved to a first-place 13.9. She had Wednesday off, so she worked him again, then woke up again Thursday morning and worked him for about 10 minutes. She clocked a 14.0 in the performance that night to place fifth in round three. And she worked Smoke again Saturday morning before the short round. “I do that to free him up because he shortens everything up so much in a run,” said Ward. “I do what’s called ‘lefts and rights.’ I take him to the first barrel first and then to the third and then to the second, making a couple big circles around each barrel. I do it at a trot both ways and a lope both ways, which keeps him honest and keeps his shoulders up all the way around each turn. I emphasize really going past each barrel – the further past it I can take him with the perfect form, the better off he will be.” While the short round in all other events at the CNFR runs slow-est to fastest, the barrel racing positions are drawn. “All day, people were asking me what would happen if I drew up first,” said Ward, who was leading the average by three-tenths of a second. “But the draw will be what it will be. I actually wanted to draw deeper because Smoke needs more ground with better traction to hold him up. I told them I hoped I’d be close to last out. And I

drew last out!” Afterward, Ward would tell her mom she wasn’t even nervous. “I knew going in that I needed a clean run,” said Ward. “Then my mom called my cell phone and was like, ‘Are you listening to the times? Do you know what they’re running in here?’” Four 13-second times had already been clocked, including the fastest recorded all week – a couple of 13.8s turned in by Jade Crossley and Morgann McDonald. Ward’s competition was nothing to sneeze at – Crossley had just won the pro rodeo in Sisters, Ore., and Hayden Segelke was riding an NFR horse that set a CNFR arena record last year. “I walked down the alley into the holding pen and listened to the announcer say that a 14.1 would still get me the saddle,” said Ward. “I was just petting Smoke and thinking, it’s the short go; we made it this far – might as well let it hang out. Everyone laughs at me be-cause I sit and talk to my horse. As soon as they were done raking, I told him, ‘Come on, big man, let’s do this; let’s give it everything we have.’ He worked like a million bucks; I was so happy with him.” Their time (13.86) was the fastest recorded of the entire week and won the short round, giving Ward the national championship by more than three-tenths of a second over Crossley. “I was really surprised that he clocked that fast,” said Ward.

“With him, you learn not to expect much and you get so much more out of him. He and I both handle pressure pretty well.” Smoke is so stout and bears such a resemblance to a freight train that at school Ward and her friends started affectionately calling him “Ogre.” His registered name is Let It Smoke, and he’s by the fast black stallion Smoke N Sparks (Dash For Perks/Shawne Bug). While his dam, Northern Missy, is Foundation bred, don’t think he missed out on speed on the bottom. Smoke’s mama went back to several extremely old famous race-bred studs, including Joe Reed and Midnight Jr. (who once won 16 straight match races and sired AQHA Hall of Fame racer Grey Badger II). “I bought Smoke two years ago from Ron and Colleen Thomas,” said Ward. “We’d watched him since he was a baby and had bugged them to sell him to us for years. They always said no. After Col-leen had an accident and was told not to ride anymore, they finally decided to sell and wanted him to go to me. I felt so lucky.” For the better part of a year, Ward hit some barrels and had a few problems. Several times, she went to ride with Ron and Colleen, whom she dubs her “second family.” She counts herself lucky to know two people so handy with barrel horses. “Everyone tells you to look past the barrel, but Ron taught me to look at the ground where I’m going,” she said. “He sets cones on three points that you find when you practice. At speed, I can only look at the first and then the third, and Smoke usually skips the third. I had tried looking at the fence, but it doesn’t work as well on him as finding these points.” Smoke stays turned out at home and is on free-choice hay on the road. He also eats Equine Pride feed containing MorindaCare joint supplements from BioCare Animal Products. He isn’t get-ting the summer off – Ward is about to hit some big circuit rodeos including Pleasant Grove, Oakley, Lehi, West Jordan and, of course, Cheyenne. In between rodeos, she’ll be at home training the eight head of horses she and her mom are bringing along now, which include her futurity colt, a nice 7-year-old and two 2-year-olds. Peeking out

from the nearby Ward house will be her championship saddle and buckle, which will no doubt have a place there for many years to come. “It’s been a pretty cool opportunity,” said Ward. “It was a sweet moment; now it’s over and time to get back to normal life.”

By Tanya Randall She may be out of the youth ranks, but open competitors still have to contend with the leading 1D duo in the country—Sarah McDonald and Fame Fling N Bling. At the $32,500-added Florida NBHA State Finals, held June 12-16 at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Fla., McDonald and Bling walked away with the 1D Championship and $4,048 after chipping off the rust in the opening rounds. “My first run I blew my first barrel and ran a 14.8,” recalled Mc-Donald, who is working two jobs until she starts nursing school in the fall. “I made it back on her first run, but didn’t win any money. On my second go, I had an awesome first and second, and when I got to the third, she slipped down really bad and I ended up getting third in the 3D. “I had Saturday for her to rest so I walked her around a lot because I figured that she would be pretty sore. Then on Sunday, I kind of got past my first barrel a little bit but she ran really hard to the other two and turned them really good, and I ran a 14.3. I never thought we’d win it because she went past her first so much. She was just running really hard.” It was the first trip for McDonald, who hails from Brunswick, Ga., to the Osceola Heritage Park, which is home to the fame Silver Spurs Rodeo that will be a part of the Wrangler Champions Chal-lenge later this year. The unfamiliar set up coupled with the mare’s obligations in the breeding shed made for a shakey start for the nor-mally dominate duo. “It just took me a few runs to get used to that pen and running her again,” said the 21-year-old. “She was having a really good run in the second, but that fall kind of set her back. I was happy that she came back and ran really hard in the finals even though that had happened.” McDonald, who is sponsored by H3 Performance Saddles and

Oxy-Gen, had climbed back aboard Bling just two weeks before the State Finals. She got to make one run the weekend before and her first run at State was just her second time back on the mare. One of the leading 1D horses in the nation year-after-year, Bling, a 7-year-old daughter of National Finals Rodeo sire A Streak Of Fling out of Short Penny, by Dash Ta Fame, started her second career as a broodmare last year. Bling, who is owned by McDonald’s Uncle Steve McDonald and Larry Ammons, currently has colts on the ground by A Smooth Guy and Cowboys Cartel. Leynnwood Makes a Connection at Chino Valley, AZ nBHA


By Tanya Randall Usually when you win rodeos it means you get to stay on the road longer, but in Lisa Lockhart’s case, it meant she got to go home. “My daughter has her state high school rodeo this weekend,” noted Lockhart, who hails from Oelrichs, S.D. “I kind of had my lip stuck out; the way I had entered I would have only got to come home for the second round if I even made it. So I told my hus-band if things go well at Innisfail, I might just turn those other two rodeos out next weekend and come home. And, that’s what I did. I get to go to all the state high school rodeo.” By virtue of her $8,507 victory at the one-run, $15,000-added 53rd Annual Daines Ranch Rodeo in Innisfail, Alberta, Lockhart was able to head home to watch her daughter, Alyssa, 15, compete in barrels, poles, breakaway and goat tying at her first high school rodeo finals. A six-time Wrangler National Finals qualifier, Lockhart is well on her way to her seventh qualification. Prior to Innisfail, she was sit-ting eighth with $32,214. However, instead of An Oakie With Cash (“Louie”) carrying the load, it’s been her outdoor specialist Fast An Gold (“Chism”) working overtime. “Louie’s been hurt quite a bit this year so I’ve been on (Chism) a lot,” said Lockhart of the 15-year-old sorrel gelding. Bred by Randy and Linda Schalla, Chism is by El Roco, a son of Beduino (TB), out of Romana Glass, by Raise Your Glass (TB). “I run him a lot usu-ally outside, but I was forced to ride him a lot this winter indoors. That’s not something I normally do or haven’t done for a lot of years, especially since I’ve had Louie anyway. It’s just much easier for Louie inside. Chism’s more of a larger, outdoor pen horse.” Lockhart was pleased to report that Louie is sound and is being legged up now. She hopes to crack him out over the Fourth. “It’s been a while since I’ve been on him, so it will take a little bit of regrouping I’m sure,” she noted. “I just ran him at four winter rodeos--Fort Worth, Jackson and first round at San Angelo. I did take him to Austin. He did well, but I don’t think he was quite right there.” She was “pleasantly surprised” with how well Chism handled the return to indoor duty. “It’s definitely not his forte,” Lockhart said, “especially little pens like San Antonio or the coliseum in San Angelo.” At Innisfail, Lockhart said Chism worked extremely well. “My third was too tight, much too close for comfort,” she chuck-led. “We actually touched the barrel. I was holding my breath there. Chism’s not one that typically gets too tight. We don’t usally hit a lot of barrels. It’s a smaller pen, but I’ve usually ridden him there.“He’s been working great this spring. He’s really fun because I can send him really hard to the first barrel. It’s a little bit of an odd setup; you kind of have to go across the pen at Innisfail. I have total confidence in him because he’s so easy to place wherever I want him. So those kinds of situations don’t bother me on Chism because he’s quite versatile in that manner.” Lockhart, a past Canadian Champion Barrel Racer, plans on qualifying again for the Canadian NFR. “I love the Canadian rodeos,” she said. “They’re pretty close for me really. I’ve already been to several up there this spring.” Lockhart will be home for 10-days before heading back to Canada for the lucrative Ponoka Stampede. Since she’s running in the second set at the Calgary Stampede—which counts for the WNFR this year—she’ll return to the States for some of the lucra-tive Fourth of July rodeos in her circuit.

“We’ve got some great rodeos in our circuit over the Fourth with Belle (Fourche) and Mandan,” she noted. “And, it’s not too far to Cody (Wyoming) and Livingston (Montana). So it’s really not too bad.”

By Tanya Randall “Finally! We won one!” said a triumphant Lizzy Ehr, who won the $4,000-added Parker County Frontier Days Rodeo with PC Poco Dell Frost (“Brazo”). “I’ve wanted to get Brazo a win. We’ve won second so many times. We’ve even been leading until the very last barrel racer, only to get out run. I’m so happy he finally won one.” Ehr of Abilene, Texas, and Brazo picked up $2,453 for the vic-tory. “My run at Weatherford was just really smooth,” she said. “I’ve felt him run harder before. I think he just handled the ground really well; it was just a little bit slippery in some spots. He just stood up and turned every barrel.” They also placed at the pro rodeos in Cleburne and Coleman, Texas, over the weekend for total earnings of $3,399. “I started out in Cleburne and we were pretty far down in slack,” Ehr recalled. “The ground was pretty shifty. He did have a bad slip on the third barrel where his backend came out from underneath him, but he still ended up splitting fifth and sixth.” Ehr made her last run of the weekend at Coleman in the perfor-mance. “I ended up winning ninth in Coleman,” said Ehr, who also placed in the WPRA-approved breakaway roping at the rodeo. “It was kind of a slow performance that night. I was even first out and the ground felt heavy. The night before was just a fast perf and that’s just the way it goes sometimes. We weren’t that far out of it. I think they won it with a .98 and we were a .29. He didn’t have as good of a first barrel at Coleman as he did the other two runs.” A North Dakota native who moved to Texas in 1999 to rodeo and train horses year-round, Ehr had been going through a tough spell of seasoning young horses when her mother Mardeen sug-gested that she ride Brazo a year-and-a-half ago. Though he was older—they don’t like to talk about his age—he hadn’t been hauled much and was a deep shade of forest green for the pro rodeos. “He never really rodeoed until now,” said Ehr of Brazo. Bred by the Cowan Brothers, LLC., Brazo—a 199-something model—is by World Champion Sire Sun Frost out of PC Oaka Della, by Docs Oaks Sugar. “He went to some of the all-women’s rodeos and Mom would take him to some jackpots. He seems like he’s really enjoying it. It seems like through the spring he’s just running harder and harder.” With her weekend’s success, Ehr now sits 29th in the WPRA World Standings with $15,609. She said she’ll try to haul but she’s not going to break the bank to get into the Top 15. “The Finals is a thought in my head,” said the registered nurse, “but I’ve got to keep winning to make this thing go. Yes, making the finals would be grand but I’m not going to break the bank to do it. If I’m not winning, I just have to go home.” Mindful of her horse’s age and short stature, Ehr is going to try to limit her runs over the Fourth of July and stay out of the really deep footing if she can. “That kind of knocks out some fun rodeos,” noted Ehr, who has a 7-year-old daughter Shyla Allen. “I’m going to go to Greeley (Colorado), Belle Fourche (South Dakota) and Springdale (Arkan-sas). If that goes well I’ll do the Spooner-Isanti run (in the Great Lakes Circuit).” If Brazo continues to work well and pay his way, Ehr will stay on her limited rodeo trail. “We’re going to see how July goes to see if I’m going to continue

to go. It’s not cheap to do this. I make good money, but I by far don’t have a money tree. So for me it’s win or go home.”

Horses have good memories. They don’t forget if someone hurt them or was mean to them. This will affect their per-formance and whole attitude.

Likewise, some people never get over a “slight”, real or imagined. It takes a lot of energy to hang onto a grudge or resentment. If you’re holding a grudge, that grudge is really holding you and keep-ing you from the peace and contentment you could have had. Forgiveness is letting go so the past doesn’t hold you prisoner. Many times people say unkind things or hurt you without meaning to and never even know the hurt and negative feelings they have stirred up in your life. Of course, the devil is happy if he can cause rifts and divisions. The Bible warns us about the damage we do by allowing unforgiveness in our lives. Matthew 6:14 says, “lf you forgive those who sin against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you.” Mark 11:25 tells us, “When you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge

against, so that your Father in Heaven will forgive your sins, too.” And, Luke 6:37 states, “Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.” These are just a few Scriptures that show the blessings of walking in love and letting go of the past. It isn’t always easy to forgive and forget especially if the hurt is deep. But, if you’ve made Jesus Lord of your life and He lives in you, then you can ask Him to help you and forgive others through Him. Forgiveness can heal your pain and bring peace. I know this is true. God has promised it!!
