Expert advice from ComfortEagle Roofing owner Stephanie HaighWhat experiences prompted you to start your own

business? People ask me all the time “How’d a nice girl

like you end up in the roofing business?” It’s easy… my dad

wanted a boy. I spent the first 20 years of my life living and

breathing construction before I raged

against the machine and decided to go

to college. I got my degree in Business

Administration with a minor in Marketing.

Went on to get my Project Management

Professional certification while working

for CH2M Hill. When dad started talking

about retirement, I found myself in the

unique position to use my experiences

and get back to doing what I had grown

to love. Absence does make the heart grow fonder. We

moved the company to Kennesaw, Georgia and have been

improving the community ever since.

How long has ComfortEagle Roofing been in business?

We have over 20 years of combined experience in roofing

and construction.

How do you determine if a roof needs a simple repair

or a complete roof? There are so many factors that

go into the decision to repair or re-roof. How old is the

roof? What type of shingles are currently on the roof?

What type of damage has it sustained? Has the roof been

maintained? There are companies out there that will pull

a digital satellite image of the roof from their office and

send out quotes. We don’t do that. You wouldn’t want

your doctor to diagnose you as terminal without running

tests. So why would you want a roofer who has never been

on your roof to determine the extent of repairs needed.

Each one of our roof inspections comes with a video roof

analysis so our homeowners can see first hand the extent

of the damage. Based on our findings we work with the

homeowner to determine what is best for them and their

budget.

How can homeowners prolong the

life of their roof?

Experts recommend having your roof

inspected by a roofing professional

twice a year to help prolong the life of

your roof. Removing debris and other

materials from your roof and regular

gutter cleaning can help you prevent

costly interior damage. ComfortEagle

is the only roofing company to offer maintenance programs

that help homeowners protect their investment. Why

wait for damages to occur when a simple and affordable

maintenance plan can prolong the life of your roof and

avoid the nightmares and headaches caused by expensive

interior damages.

Is there an advantage to using a specific type of

shingle? Architectural shingles are going to put roofers out

of business. Not only do they improve property values by 5

to 7% but they can be warrantied for up to 50 years.

What about the design aspect? Can ComfortEagle

help the home owner choose a color and style of the

shingle to best complement the house? ComfortEagle,

LLC is continually improving communities one roof at a time.

We are happy to provide suggestions, but our homeowners

do not have to take our word for it. Each of our inspections

comes with a 3D rendering of their home. Thanks to recent

advancements in technology, homeowners can try on

different shingles and accessories available for your home

with just the click of a button. https://beacon.hover.to/

shared/sPyormWbhp_D2gAcQkVq

When it comes to storm damage, can ComfortEagle

help the home owner negotiate with the insurance

company and or arrange financing? ComfortEagle

has years of experience working with most insurance

companies. We help homeowners get everything they

deserve from their insurance providers. We take the hassle

out of filing a claim. The insurance adjusters know that

when ComfortEagle calls, it’s for good reason. We will

not waste the homeowner’s or the adjusters time by filing

claims unless we can prove that the damage to the roof was

caused by an Act of God.

How long does it typically take for ComfortEagle

Roofing to schedule the roofing repair or replacement?

This really depends on the homeowner and the extent

of the damage. Once the decision is made to move

forward with the roofing project, a foreman is assigned to

the homeowner. We schedule a time for the foreman to

meet the homeowner and review the project. This is an

opportunity for us to ensure that we have all the necessary

materials and equipment needed for their individual project.

This helps us minimize delays during the installation. Once

the materials are ordered, and the job is scheduled, we put

the roof on in 1-2 days depending on the size of your home.

What type of warranties apply to the new roof and is

Comfort Eagle licensed and insured? ComfortEagle is

licensed and insured with a Certified Project Management

Professional overseeing every project. We are blessed to be

able to offer extended warranties to our homeowners. As

Certified Shingle Installers we can provide our homeowners

with additional protection in the form of 20-year and 50-

year transferrable warranties on our installations.

PRO TIPS:

Size: Larger rooms can handle furnishings and decor that

are larger in scale. Smaller rooms can display more petite or

delicate furnishings.

Furnishings: The focal furniture in the room sets the

stage for the scale of the other furnishings. For example, an

overstuffed sofa and a delicate side table may look silly next

to each other.

Height: The higher the ceiling, the taller and more

imposing the furniture can be. Low ceilings beg for low

furniture and decor. The one exception to this rule is using

low, mid-century modern furnishings in a room with tall

ceilings to achieve a dramatic effect.

White space: Remember to leave “white space” in a

room. This is the space around and above furniture. A room

rarely looks good when every square inch of it is filled. The

eye needs room to rest in a space, so leave some surfaces

uncovered and some walls alone.

Patterns: If the room is small, keep patterns to scale using

smaller prints and less of them. A larger room can handle

larger patterns and more color. If you have a small room but

prefer a larger print, make sure it has lots of white space in it

and use it sparingly.

Repetition: Use repetitive patterns or colors. For

example, if you have square-shaped wainscoting panels on

your wall, choose a square coffee table to maintain the same

proportions throughout the room. Just be careful not to

overdo it.

Take a walk throughout the rooms of your home. If something

doesn’t feel right, it probably doesn’t have the correct scale

or proportion. Rearrange it, remove it or replace it until you

achieve the room, the home that you desire.

The Elements of Interior Design

Scale and proportion are both two vital principals of

Interior Design that can make or break the space. Scale and

Proportion defined: Scale refers to how an item relates to the

size of the room and proportion refers to the size of an item

and how it relates to other objects in the room.

Suppose you enter a large, beautiful room. Everything is

top of the line from the elegant two-story crystal chandelier

down to the priceless silk Persian rug. Suddenly, your eyes

stop in the middle of the space. The centerpiece of this

enormous room is a tiny, little sofa that can hardly fit two

people. Next to the tiny little sofa are miniature end tables

and some matching half-pint accent chairs. This is what

we call a lack of consideration for scale. Unfortunately, this

happens more than you can imagine when it comes to

selecting furniture pieces, accessories, patterned fabrics

and other design elements. A larger, high back sofa would

have been a better solution. While scale relates to the size

of an object and its relationship to the size of the space,

proportion refers to how the elements of an object relate to

itself. For instance, a large lamp holding a tiny lamp shade.

Below are some examples where scale and proportion are

properly taken into consideration when designing a space.

Let’s go GLAMPING!

Glamping is best defined as interior design gone wild!

It combines the fun of camping with the luxuries of a

hotel. It also makes the experience of camping much

easier and enjoyable. It’s simple to inject a bit of luxury,

comfort and glamour into your camping experience

without the cost? SimplyDECOR|SimplyCUISINE shows

how you can make “glamping” a fun and memorable

adventure.

The Tent: Look for something large and unique.

Depending on where you glamp, you might even

rent a temporary tent which can be pre-pitched by

someone else to make your trip even easier. You could

also invest in a family tent you can pitch on site very

quickly, leaving you plenty of time to put your feet up

and relax!

Campervan: If owning a campervan doesn’t fit your

lifestyle, you can rent one instead. Look for a vintage

and retro camper which will add some Old Hollywood

style to the experience. There is a lot to be said about

glamping “caravan” style. Everything stays on board

until you’re ready to leave for the campsite. Just hitch

up and go whenever the mood strikes. Getting a

vintage caravan with your own style can be

both environmentally friendly and creative, but

make sure you purchase carefully and to ensure

a safe caravan experience, take some towing

lessons before the journey.

Lighting: Outside, mark the

boundary of your campsite with

candles in glass containers for

safety. Battery powered candles

can give the same romantic effect

without the danger of a lit flame.

If you want to have atmospheric

lights inside the tent then battery

or solar-powered fairy lights are

great for setting the mood. Place

these in interesting jars to bring

light to the space. Solar powered

garden lights are perfect for

luminating a path in the night.

Simple, delicious meals: Put the canned pinto’s away.

Glamping invites a different kind of campfire menu.

Make sure you plan your meals before you go and take

a shopping list with you. Think about presentation. If

you have a cake, put it on a cake stand, and if you are

serving tea, make sure it’s in vintage tea cups. These

items can easily be purchased from the local thrift shop

and will add elegance to the dining experience.

Bedtime: An all seasons 13.5 luxury Hungarian duvet

is the duvet of choice for glampers. Only the warmest

will do for chilly nights. A king size ‘all seasons’ is the

one to go for. It’s 3 duvets, in one: a 9 tog and a 4.5

tog which can be used individually or put together for

a 13.5 tog. You will need at least 4 pillows. The plump,

luxurious Hungarian pillows are stuffed with goose

down and finished in Jacquard cotton and are perfect

for glamping. The choice for bed linens is hotel quality

1,000 thread count cotton or Mulberry silk for that bit of

indulgence. As any true glamper knows, it’s those little

extras that make the difference between camping and

glamping. You will need at least 4 pillow-cushions and

a couple of throws. Quilted cotton spreads are great

for warmth and the classic vintage look. True glampers

know that only a proper mattress will do. However, it’s

hard to fit a king size mattress in your back-pack so the

air mattress works just fine. The key to making an air

mattress luxurious is the topper… Yes, the topper. Think

of a topper as the icing on the cake. Layered on top

of your air mattress and beneath your sheets. Toppers

help keep the cold from the earth away from your body

increasing a restful sleep. Memory foam or goose down

toppers are best. Create a romantic feel in the bedroom

by draping muslin around your luxury bed.

area, Acworth has many boutiques, jewelry and gifts shops,

such a wide variety of enticing culinary experiences as

downtown Acworth! Whether you’re in the mood for an

treat yourself to something new and exciting every time in

downtown Acworth!

A LITTLE HISTORY

The Cherokee Nation lived in the area until the early 1830’s.

The Western and Atlantic Railroad began operation in

1845 in Atlanta, bringing progress northward to Northcutt

Station, the first northbound water-stop on the new track.

Joseph Gregg, a railroad engineer, renamed this stop after

his hometown of Acworth, New Hampshire. Acworth pros-

pered as a busy trade center and was incorporated as a city

in December 1860.

The Civil War brought “The Great Locomotive Chase”

through Acworth in April 1862 when James Andrew’s Raiders

stole the famous engine, “The General,” in nearby Big Shan-

ty. Sherman was headquartered in Acworth for several days.

The town was spared the torch until November 1864; many

homes and buildings were burned.

In 1950, Lake Allatoona was completed and it, along with

Lake Acworth, created recreational opportunities. Today,

Acworth is the center of a thriving, vibrant community.

J.D.'S BBQskinless/boneless chicken breasts and some seriously

tasty chicken wings. The menu also includes some

southern favorites such as baked beans, collard greens,

Brunswick stew, coleslaw and the most amazing fried

corn-on-the-cobb imaginable. Try the spicy collards on

top of their famous smokehouse burger with some fries

on the side and a sweet iced tea or glass of cold beer.

Delicious!

See their full menu online at www.jdsbbq.com

You can always count on J.D.’s BBQ to have a consistent

menu no matter what the season, but during the

holidays, they add some traditional items like smoked

turkey and ham, pumpkin cobbler and some brisket

chili for those cold, winter days.

From Pit to Plate the food is cooked fresh daily and is

always outstanding! The atmosphere is friendly with a

down home feeling and the service is the best you’ve

ever had.

J.D.’s BBQ has two convenient locations in Woodstock

and Acworth and this summer Chip is opening his new

restaurant called J.D.’s on the Lake. Here you will find

delicious, seafood and live entertainment. You can

expect the same great southern hospitality and the

exceptional quality you’ve come to count-on through

the years at J.D.’s BBQ

If you haven’t tried Chip's smoked pork, come on in,

pull up a chair and get ready for some of the best

you’ve ever tasted. At J.D.’s, everyone is treated like

family!

When I think of my favorite summer flavor, an old-

fashioned BBQ smokehouse comes to mind. Nothing

makes your mouth-water faster than the smell of a

slow cooking smoker. J.D.’s BBQ tops the list for some

of Georgia’s best. Chip Allen is the owner of J.D.’s BBQ

in Woodstock and Acworth and he says one of the

many things he loves about BBQ is the way it brings

people together.

Chip officially began in the BBQ business in 1999. He

was self-taught through trial and error. Chip started out

by smoking whole pigs for parties while he was in high

school and college. He moved from North Carolina

to Georgia in 1996 and worked in the construction

business for about 3 years. One day he saw an ad in

the paper for the sale of a BBQ stand. That was on a

Wednesday. On Thursday he went to see it, on Friday

he quit his job and on Sunday September 19th, 1999…

he was open for business.

Sadly, Chips father, David passed away when Chip was

young and his brother Jeff died just a few years later.

They are the name sake for J.D.’s BBQ.

Chip says the “Old Timers” had a strong influence on

him. They were the local farmers he grew up with and

they would cook for their families, churches and school

fundraisers. He learned early on that when people eat

BBQ, it’s was always a good time. J.D.’s smokes the best

quality meats including Boston pork butts, beef brisket,

baby back ribs, whole chickens,

Real BBQ is meat that has been slow cooked in a smoker. If you

want to feed a lot of people, you have to smoke a lot of meat…

hence, the smoke house! A good smoke house has to be main-

tained and stoked to keep the proper temperature and enough

smoke to create that BBQ flavor we all love. At JD’s, they slow

cook their pork butts 16 - 18 hours and their beef brisket 12 – 14

hours. They keep the baby back ribs smoking for about 5 hours.

After they plate your BBQ, you have your choice of sauces. JD’s

house BBQ sauce is a perfect blend and truly enhances that

good old southern BBQ flavor.

If your family has a busy evening schedule, you can stop by JD’s

and pick-up some smoked, pulled pork and a bottle of sauce for

the road and keep the gang happy because nothing cures hun-

ger like a delicious BBQ sandwich. Catering for an event is one of

JD’s BBQ specialties. The next time you have a party, call JD’s and

let them do the work. Their catering professionals really know

how to please a crowd.

Charcoal Grills – nothing ever tasted better! When I think of Barbeque, images of backyard gatherings

with friends and neighbors comes to mind. The smell of

fresh watermelon and corn on the cobb accompanied by

the smoky goodness of Dad’s grill. Preparing for a summer

of safe grilling is important, so we have listed some safety

and “how to” tips from a couple of top leaders in the

industry. Kingsford and True Value.

CLEANING THE CHARCOAL GRILL

• Scrape the burnt, cooked-on food particles from the

grates using a stiff wire brush. Next, place your grates in

a large plastic container filled with hot soapy water. This

activity is best suited for the back yard. Let the grates soak

for 30 minutes to an hour. Using a stainless-steel scrub pad

and rubber dishwashing gloves, remove any remaining

“gunk” from the grates. Rinse and let dry (if grates are

aluminum, dry with a towel)

• Remove any old coals and ash from the basin of the grill.

Wipe down the basin and grill top with a wet rag.

• After everything has completely dried, replace the grates

and the cover. Now you should be ready for action.

Some folks find charcoal barbequing intimidating, but we

learned if you use a coal chimney, it’s an easy and healthy

way to fire-up the grill!

STACKING THE COAL CHIMNEY

• Stuff 3 or 4 sheets of newspaper into the bottom of the

chimney, then fill the remaining space in the canister with

charcoal.

• Remove the grate and light the newspaper in the bottom

of the chimney. Set the chimney in the basin of the grill.

• When the coals glow and are covered in ash (15 to 20

minutes) they are ready to be turned out into the basin of

the grill.

• Put the grate back on and close the lid. This gives the grill

time to get hot before you start to cook.

So, grab the bad mitten rackets and invite the neighbors.

Summer is here and it’s time to get the backyard barbeque

going!
