free from distractions. Sit comfortably or recline. You will receive minimal benefit if you merely play a Paraliminal in the background; do not listen while driving or operating machinery.

POSSiBiLitiES FOR GOiNG BEyONDTo achieve simplicity in your life requires one thing: become fully present in the moment. This means consciously understanding why you are doing what you are doing at any given time and deliberately designing your life to align with your highest values and ideals. The noted American author Henry David Thoreau described it best in his classic book, On Walden Pond:

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I wanted to live deep and suck all the marrow of life…

You need not venture to the woods, take a vow of poverty, or forsake all worldly goods to savor the essence of life. You simply deliberately choose how to live. Instead of passively moving through life only reacting to what comes your way, you proactively manifest your dreams and desires through the day-to-day choices you make.

One way to do that is to slow down enough to ask–and answer–important questions along the way. Is this job right for me? Do I really need a new car? What will I need to give up to travel abroad? Do I need a bigger house?

Reflecting on your questions and reviewing your options allows you space to align your desires with your highest values and to really discern what is right for you. You learn what you are willing to give up and what you want to keep. You may sacrifice an organized home to spend more time with your children, or forego a vacation to complete a project ahead of schedule.
