Simple Tips for No Limit Poker

Table Selection

• Find tables with players that play too many hands.• Sit on the left of loose players and on the right of

tight players.• A table with a bunch of loose

passive/weak players is better than a table with one very bad player and 4 solid tight players.

• Players acting before you should be full stacked and short stackers should act after you.

• Use sophisticated poker software for better table selection

Table Selection

This is a good table to join.

• There is only one tight player. I most probably have an edge against other villains.

You should avoid this table.

• Although a very loose player is on my right, all other players are considered solid tight players.

Hand ranges

Play tight in early position (<15% of the hands), semi-tight in medium position (15-20%) and loose in late position (20-50%).

• Adjust the hand ranges depending on the tightness/looseness of the table.

• Adjust the hand ranges depending on the villains’ stack sizes.

• Isolation and 3betting hand ranges change accordingly.

Position - Preflop• You should be 3betting far more in

position than out of position.• Use position to steal blinds and

isolate limpers.• Always be more aware of your

position than your hand. The very same hand may be a fold but also a raise depending on the position.

• Tight players are expected to play even tighter when defending their blinds.

• Use a tighter raising range from the blinds and take down unraised pots by cold calling preflop, which wouldn’t make you so much money had you raised.

3Betting

• Loose players open with a wide range of hands. Thus calling our 3bets is –EV for them

• 3betting may be far more +EV than just calling in some cases.

• We take back the initiative in the hand.

• If we 3bet lightly, they will begin calling us down with much weaker hands.

A 3-bet is when there has been a raise and then another raise after that.

• Balance your 3bet range; otherwise opponents will make the right decisions.

• When 3betting light, your image as a nit will be thrown away.

• Don’t 3bet because it’s popular!

• Neither a too wide range nor a too tight range is good for 3betting.

Continuation Betting

• Continuation betting (c-betting) allows you to win many small pots.

• C-bet your entire range against opponents who fold more than 70% against C-bets.

• The more players contesting for the pot, the less you should c-bet.

• If opponent snap-calls your c-bet, fire turn and river. They can’t have a big hand.

• C-bet any A or K high flop against tight players. Their range consist mostly of small pairs and suited connectors, unless they flatted AJ or KQ.

• In general, C-bet entire range (made hands, semi-bluffs, second pairs, bluffs) out of position.

• With a made hand (ie. set) check-raise wet boards more (when there are draws) and flat call dry boards.

• Check-raise as a bluff with hands that have some potential, like backdoor flush and straight draws combined with overcards.

• Check-raise bluff opponents who c-bet a lot. As their C-bet% decreases, so should your check-raise frequency.

• As long as they give up on your check-raises, put them to the test until they adjust.

• When they don’t give you credit, be more inclined to check-fold.

• Big draws (nut flush draw + overcards) should likely be played for a check-raise.

Rakeback• Good poker rakeback deals are

a sign of a reliable poker room.• Do basic internet research

before signing up for the best rakeback deal.

• Don’t just look at the size of the rakeback deal. Poker rooms offer lots of other bonuses too.

• The looser the table, the more profitable you’ll be in regards to rakeback.

• Multitabling helps you earn a lot more.

• Higher stakes means more rakeback.

Skill vs Luck

300 poker players sat at tables of 6, with 3 experts and 3 average per table. Each had 10 euros to start with and they played 60 hands.

Luck, rather than skill, was key in determining final balance, with experts taking no more, on average, than novices. Experts did play differently, on various measures, and seemed better able to cope with bad luck, losing less; but they also won less when given good cards.

Is poker a game of skill or a game of luck?

Conclusion: Chance clearly dominates skill short-term.
