If you have difficulties with day-to-day tasks such as bathing, getting dressed or preparing meals, a range of equipment, referred to as community equipment, is available. This can make things easier and help you to maintain your independence.

Items, known as ‘simple aids to daily living’, can make a real difference - a raised toilet seat to help with getting on and off the toilet, a bath board to help get in and out of the bath, a walking stick to assist with mobility, or a range of items to help in the kitchen.

How can I get equipment to help me?

You can buy it yourself

You can buy simple aids to daily living in high street shops. The Department of Health has introduced a national accreditation scheme. Retailers who have applied to be part of the scheme and meet national standards can display a kite mark. This means that they will be able to provide information about the equipment and demonstrate how it works. There are a number of local accredited retailers, listed on page 6.

You can get a prescription - and have the option to ‘top it up’

Alternatively, you may contact Social Services and ask to be assessed to see if you are eligible for support from the Council. If you qualify for help, a professional such as an occupational therapist will work with you to find out which equipment meets your needs. They will then give you a prescription for the equipment to take to an accredited retailer of your choice. You redeem the prescription and get your equipment free of charge.

If you wish, you can pay extra (a ‘top-up’) towards a version of the equipment that is more to your taste. For example, you may choose a different model or a different colour, which is more in fitting with your home.

Can I receive all equipment this way?

Prescriptions are only issued for simple aids to daily living. These are usually small items such as raised toilet seats which cost less than £100. Accredited retailers will supply a range of such items on your local high street.

Larger pieces of equipment, known as ‘complex aids to daily living’, are not available by prescription. These are things such as a battery powered mobile hoist to help you get in and out of bed. To get this equipment, you need to be assessed by a professional, who will then provide the items you need. This ensures that you have equipment that meets your needs, and you are able to use it safely.

Definitions

Delivery – delivery of equipment to your home. Fitting – attaching and securing items, for example, a raised toilet seat to a toilet pan. Installation – fixing equipment to walls and floors, for example, a grab rail.
