ldquoCompressed natural gas is a readily available alternative to gasoline and diesel With the ability to power light me-dium and heavy-duty vehicles CNG is an affordable environmentally friendly fuel choicerdquo
Louisiana Lt Governor Scott Angelle
+ Costs less than gas
+ Safe an well developed field
+ Available to meet current demand
+ Gets near equivalent mileage as gasonline
+ Accounts for 82 of production wells in Louisiana
We presented our research discoveries and design to the Metrolopolitan Planning Organizations of Lafayette Houma and Lake Charles
In partnership with the Lafayette Transit System and Metropolitan Planning Organization my 2011 senior class had the opportunity to work with the future of bus transportation in Louisiana We researched into
the problems with the current bus system as well as the implementation of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a clean burning alternative fuel to diesel The class split into 3 groups-
my group designed the XP2 a CNG Hybrid Electric Para-transit Bus
Transit Design Studio
NATURAL GAS GENERATORThe Hybrid electric system begins with a traction generator fueled by CNG This small yet powerful generator converts the energy from the fuel into electricity This operation allows for a lighter yet more powerful generator to be implemented
TUFFSHELL FUEL TANKSSix carbon composite tanks fuel the engine Each tank weighs 153 pounds while typi-cal steel tanks of the same size weigh 275 pounds These tanks hold the same amount of fuel as a 70 gallon diesel fuel tank
IN WHEEL HUB MOTORSTwo electric in-wheel motors are the direct source of driving power and provide enough torque for inner city stop-and-go traffic The direct drives have built-in cooling and can be easily maintained from outside the vehicle
LITHIUM-ION BATTERY PACKSThe electricity created from the generator is stored in 3 lithium-ion battery pack specifi-cally designed for heavy-duty applications such as transit buses They are secured in the front of the bus beneath the bus driver for weight distribution
REGENERATIVE BRAKINGDuring braking the two in wheel electric motors act as generators recovering energy normally lost during braking and stores it back into the battery packs Heavy-duty designs are now capable of recovering over 30 of a vehiclersquos kinetic energy
TANDEM WHEELSThe frame rides on six 33 inch standardized tires Four tan-dem style wheels in the back offer smoother rides at higher speeds for intra-city traveling
The XP2 Hybrid Electric
ADA COMPLIANCEThe entire design of the interior and exterior of the bus follows the guidelines of the American with Disabilities Act The bus seats 23 comfortably with 2 handicap spacesAn exit window is located on both sides of the bus in case of an emer-gency
AIR COOLINGCarrier brand air conditioning units provide exceptional cooling throughout the interior space of the bus Air ducts are placed on the sides of brakes to direct streaming air to cool down the brake pads These ducts also play a role in keeping the natural gas gen-erator at a safe temperature
HUMAN FACTORSIn order to design a para-transit bus extensive research and studies were performed examining vari-ous human factors and dimensions People bound to wheelchairs were taken into consideration as well as the deaf blind and handicapped Personal comfort zones played a major part as well
CNG TANK PLACEMENTWhen designing the structural element of the bus wersquove incorporated the six CNG tanks into the frame This unique placement of the tanks as opposed to the typical aftermar-ket rooftop placement allows for a lower center of gravity thus improving overall handling and performance The positioning also allows for a much more aerodynamically designed body to decrease wind resistance increase gas mileage and improve overall aesthetics of the bus
seating capacity = 23 seating + 2 wheelchair
Transit Design Studio
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Volumetric models highlighting individual com-ponents of the bus were constructed primarily on a laser printer The final half shell model was fabri-cated using traditional model making techniques The overall form of the body was molded with clay then laid into plaster The negative of the mold was then overlayed in fiberglass and sanded to a smooth finish then finally painted
The Phantom Aero Concept is a highly aerodynamic racing bicycle designed especially for the competive Triathlete and cyclist looking to get an edge on the competition
Phantom Aero bicycle concept
rear mountings create tremendous drag and bottles are often ejected unintentionally
center storage dangerously forces rider to reach below to grab bottle
front hydration storage disperses weight unevenly
typical waterbottle placements
The bicycle works to reduce aerodynamic drag by hiding components such as waterbottles and storage accessories from the wind
concept refinement
+ a customized form-fitting water bottle has been designed to sit snug inside the frame of the bicycle
+ the bottle is integrated into the wind shadow of the top tube
+ the watebottle can easily be removed cleaned and reused
+ eliminates waterbottle cages lessening weight
+ the waterbottle holds 40 ounces of fluids
HYDRATION INTEGRATIONSTORAGE INTEGRATION
+ The Phantom Concept features an integrated storage system designed to be entirely hidden from the wind
+ neopreme case carries your tools gels spare tube and CO2 cartridges
+storage unit located inside of seat tube for a lower center of gravity
+ eliminates the need for a seperate tool mounting system
+ hidden positioning decreases drag increases speed
The frame is made of carbon composites that provide an extremely high strength-to weight ratio for rigidity
flexible straw for easy drinking
water bottle fits into the top tube
Lid features ldquoon-the-flyrdquo refill valve
waterbottle and toolkit are invisible to the wind
