Town Council is pursuing a satellite boundary extension to include the properties of Copper Mountain Mine into the Town of Princeton.

Although the mine and it’s employees benefit from services in Princeton, the town receives no tax revenue.

CAO Rick Zerr and director of finance, Shirley McMahon have been working on this proposal for six months. “No lack of effort here,” said Mayor Frank Armitage during the June 16 regular meeting of council. “I commend you both on the great job.”

With a motion made by Councillor Maynard and seconded by Councillor Pateman, council endorsed the extension and

authorized staff to forward the submission to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and fulfill all of the necessary statutory obligations.

Council received and approved the 2013 Statement of Financial Information and the 2013 Small Community Investment Fund Report.

The financial statement includes information with respect to debt, payment to suppliers, employee and council remuner-ation and expenses and will be made available to the public on the town website.

A lesson is ‘burned’ to memory?

On Wednesday June 18, at approximately 9 p.m., a fire was set in the grass right beside the Brown Bridge. The 911 operator received numerous calls immediately (blocking the line momentarily). The Princeton Volunteer Fire Department arrived within a couple of minutes and doused the fire. Princeton RCMP confirmed the youth involved were apprehended. A bit of playing around with cottonwood resulted in a fire that went out of control quickly, causing them to bolt from the scene. It was also confirmed that one of the members of the group involved called 911 to report the fire.

Similkameen River claims life of local man

The swift moving water of the Similkameen River claimed the life of 23 year old Scott Fechner during the weekend of June 13.

Fechner and friends were camping at PY Point, along the Old Hedley Road. On Friday evening, Fechner left the campsite on foot, headed for home. Although it was not unusual for Fechner to go off on his own, family and friends became concerned Sunday afternoon when no one had heard from him. On Monday, when he had not

gone into work, the police were called in. A shoe and hat were located on the bank of the

Similkameen on Monday morning. The RCMP helicopter and Ground Search and Rescue were then called in to assist with the search.

Cst. Herron of the Princeton RCMP reported that the body was located on a sand bar and recovered by Swiftwater Rescue team members.

The B.C. Coroner’s service is investigating.RCMP are asking residents to remember that

water is high and fast this time of the year and to take extra care when along the shore.

With the warmer weather, Princeton RCMP have seen an increase in the number of rural break and enters and property thefts including several recent incidents in the Princeton-Summerland Road area near Bankier. Two males associated to an older model white Chevy Astro van are believed to be involved in some of these incidents. Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity to police and to secure their belongings.

Princeton Lions Club closes doorsIt is with regret that I announce the Princeton

Lions Club is calling it quits as of June 30, 2014. For 42 Years, our motto has been “We Serve” but with membership down to 7 “active” members we are just not able to accomplish the goals that we have set for ourselves. We have tried repeatedly to encourage new members to join us, but in today’s world of cable TV, satellite dishes, computers, video games and organized sports, people are no longer looking for ways to fill their long winter evenings. Volunteerism has gone the way of the Dodo.

Many of our remaining members are people well past retirement age who have health issues that require a lot of time on the road between Princeton and Penticton, Kelowna, Vancouver etc. Three of the remaining active members are leaving the area to move to places with better health care. Unfortunately, in the past few years, we have lost some members who have passed on. We just cannot continue with those few members

that we have left. Our programs, proj-

ects, supplies and equip-ment have been dispersed locally to other service clubs and charities. It is our understanding that Princeton will still look forward to such things as Pancake Breakfast, Duck Race, Grey Cup Pool etc, as these have been taken over by other orga-nizations along with our equipment. The club would like to take this time to extend their thanks the community and the business community for the support over the years ~ It has been great. The Lions will fulfill our commitment to our Ambassador candidate and then we will bid you a fond adieu, it has been a pleasure serving the people of Princeton.

Dave Shalanski, president, and all the members of the Princeton Lions Club.

With schools behind picket lines for a second week and little hope of a quick settlement, school districts are starting to notify parents that year-end report cards won’t be produced.

Surrey school district superintendent Jordan Tinney posted a notice to parents that even shortened report cards that were planned at the beginning of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation strike won’t be possible.

“The information that we need to produce report cards is in the hands of teachers and they are on strike,” Tinney wrote. “The support staff we normally have to help us develop and print report cards are also honouring the picket lines and are not at work.”

New Westminster superintendent John Gaiptman sent out a similar letter Monday, tell-ing parents not to expect report cards for kinder-garten to Grade 8.

“Please be assured that, although you will not receive a final report card, your child will be placed in the next grade level for September,” Gaiptman wrote.

School districts are running buses this week to get Grade 10-12 students to their provincial exams, which have been designated an essential service by the B.C. Labour Relations Board.

Tinney added that summer school plans are looking “very tenuous” in Surrey, and some dis-tricts have already canceled their summer instruc-tion.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender has said the partial lockout imposed on teachers will be lifted after year-end administrative days so it does not interfere with summer school programs.

VICTORIA – A few things have changed since the last all-out teacher strike in B.C.

That was just two years ago, when the B.C. Teachers’ Federation was coming off its second-ever voluntary agreement with a 16 percent raise over five years and what the union termed an “enhanced” signing bonus of $4,000. Even with special teacher-only top-ups, BCTF members almost rejected the last of the gov-ernment’s big-spending pre-Olympic labour deals signed in 2006.

By 2012, outraged teachers were back on the legislature lawn, howling for another 16 percent with backup vocals provided as usual by HEU, CUPE, BCGEU and other public sector unions that settled for less. Teachers had just sailed through a crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that.

Last week the protest venue switched to Vancouver, where both the crowd and the demands looked a bit thinner. The signing bonus target is up to $5,000, but the raise is a mere 8 percent over five years (compounded, for those who passed math), plus another huge basket of cash disguised as benefit improvements and so forth. Government negotiators put their total compensation demand at 14.5 percent.

One obvious dodge: they want the bottom two steps of the teacher salary grid dropped. That’s simply a raise for entry-level teachers. Admittedly those are rare creatures these days with shrinking enrolment and ironclad seniority rules that allow retired teachers to monopolize substitute work.

Something else that’s changed since 2012 is that the govern-ment has granted the BCTF’s wish to bargain directly with the province. The education ministry executed a takeover of the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association after last year’s election, and installed veteran industrial union negotiator Peter Cameron. He’s backed up by long-time labour specialist Lee Doney, whose task is to keep the teacher deal within Treasury Board limits that

have defined all other public sector union settlements.Doney made it clear last week that no mediator is going to

come in and “split the baby” as long as the BCTF position is so far beyond the current compensation framework.

Despite constant union complaints of low wages and deterio-rating working conditions in B.C. schools, education grads remain lined up around the block hoping to get in. Why is that?

For those who have been exposed to life outside school for a while, it’s fairly simple. The job market out here in the real world is tough. And here’s how the real world evaluates a teaching job.

Start with 189 working days, each nine hours long as per the accepted definition, and the top-heavy seniority list that places the average teacher salary at around $72,000 a year. That works out to $42.32 an hour, plus a suite of benefits that most private sector employees can only dream about, starting with three months of prime-time vacation.

I am occasionally lectured by teachers that the job goes far beyond five hours in the classroom and an additional four hours a day preparing and mark-ing. They throw out different estimates, variously

defined. Alas, it’s a salaried job, and we salaried employees in the real world don’t waste a lot of time counting hours. Here’s the work, here’s the deadline, here’s the pay. Take it or leave it.

Consider another union demand that seems to be just another thinly disguised raise. The BCTF wants a large increase in preparation time for elementary school. There are no duties being added here. For this one item, government negotiators calculate the cost to taxpayers at $86.2 million every year by the fifth year of the BCTF proposal.

Simple Math for BCTF: Economic Growth =

Higher Wages

BC ViewsTOM FLETCHER

SpotlightOPINION

Whatever the final government deal is with the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF), and whenever it’s settled, the BCTF must quit opposing economic growth if it ever hopes to accomplish its long-term salary and class size goals.

Most taxpayers, understandably, are not interested in shelling out more money to the government. There has been no public rush to open wallets for big raises for teachers – or any other government sector union.

The BCTF’s long-held desire to go back to year 2000 tax levels in order to fund raises for its teachers, would gut most families financially – B.C. budget documents show a two-income family of four, making $90,000 per year, would pay $6,234 a year in provincial income tax, nearly double what they pay today.

Taxpayers can’t afford that kind of hike, and the B.C. government knows it. That’s why they are focusing on grow-ing the B.C. economy, in order to generate more money from sources other than Joe and Jane Taxpayer.

But here the BCTF’s chickens have come home to roost: the BCTF, inexplicably and wildly overstepping its bounds as a union meant to represent the interests of teachers at the bargaining table, has come out against virtually every signifi-cant economic development project proposed in B.C.

Why would the teachers’ union pass a motion against the Northern Gateway Pipeline, which would generate $1.2 billion for taxpayers over its first three decades in operation? How could that possibly serve the interests of its members, who want higher wages and smaller classes – things that revenue could help address?

How did it serve the teachers’ union to reject the Prosperity Mine in the Chilcotin, which would have gener-ated $5.52 billion in new tax revenue for the province, plus another $4.3 billion for the federal government?

Why would the teachers’ union oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline proposal, months before any plan had been released?

Why is the B.C. teachers’ union fighting the Keystone XL pipeline, which would connect Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico, never coming near B.C.? What does it have to do with B.C. classrooms or teachers?

Yet the BCTF opposed all of these economic develop-ment measures.

The BCTF flag flew high at an anti-fracking rally in Vancouver last month – yes, the union opposed the fledgling liquefied natural gas industry too.

Why would the BCTF join Occupy Vancouver, pro-testing against the same wealth-generating corporations their teachers’ pensions are heavily invested in: TD Bank ($155.7m in pension investments), ScotiaBank ($124.3m), RBC ($166.7m), Bank of Montreal ($75.2m) and Bell Canada ($61.2m)?

The BCTF opposed the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement. Yet, the BCTF fought it – with no thought given to the $140 million their pension has invested in Chinese state-controlled companies.

Despite actively opposing all of these economic drivers, the BCTF still cries poor, noting teachers start here with a salary of $49,410, way behind Alberta’s $58,500.

Alberta teachers get paid more for a simple reason: that province has aggressively pursued economic growth and could afford more. The oil sands, the single rate tax, and other economy boosters generate billions that flow into the provincial treasury, making it possible for Albertans to pay their teachers more – while their taxpayers shell out $50 per week less than identical British Columbians.

Alberta teachers have benefitted from Alberta’s economic growth, so it’s probably no surprise the Alberta Teachers’ Association isn’t out campaigning against the Northern Gateway pipeline.

Want a raise, B.C. teachers? Want to address class size and composition? Then quit fighting every economic (and tax revenue growing) opportunity that comes B.C.’s way. Cause and effect – it’s a lesson you taught us.

Forum on rivers provides information on proposed Fortis Dam

A Forum on Rivers information meeting was held on June 5 at the Seniors’ Hall. The forum was organized by Mary Masiel. The topic: The proposed Canyon Dam on the Similkameen River.

Guest speakers were Ken Farquharson and Lee McFayden.Farquharson is a retired professional Engineer, Elder for Parks,

co-founder of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORC) and the Sierra Club of B.C., and the Committee on Endangered Rivers. McFayden is a longtime Similkameen resident, retired organic farmer, Steering Committee member for the Okanagan River Restoration Initiative.

Investor-funded Fortis Inc., parent company of Fortis Generation and Fortis BC, have allegedly partnered with the Washington Department of Ecology, who has budgeted 1.6 mil-lion to the Fortis BC Storage Feasibility Study for an evaluation of a proposed hydropower and water supply storage facility on the Similkameen River. The structure site will be 15 kilometres south of Princeton and Hwy 3 towards Hope.

The dam structure is estimated to be 165 metres high and 500 metres wide, which Farquharson says will make this dam the third largest in B.C. The reservoir will be 20 km long, covering 750 hectares. Farquharson states that “the proposed full pool elevation of the reservoir has not yet been made public.” It is estimated that it would produce 45 - 65 megawatts of hydro electric power and produce 205-220 gig watt hours of average annual energy. The cost - between $350 - $400 million dollars. If there is approval across the board, construction will commence in 2018 and would take two years until its completion.

Fortis Generation is promising the positive aspects of such a project; flood risk reduction downstream and on Osoyoos Lake;

water shaping to improve water availability to downstream users (especially during summer); less flow variability; potential water quality improvements; base load renewable hydro generation and the ability to decide the amount of energy at its peak and the con-trol as to when to release.

“Is stated by Fortis, that there would be a shared cost and water supply for both Washington and Oregon, with no mention of a cooperative agreement with BC interests,” Farquharson writes. There are currently 102 water licences on the Similkameen River - two of which belong to Fortis Inc.

In the review, Farquharson says that as co-founder of the ORC, he was asked to represent them at the forum.

“The ORC is a supporter of free flowing rivers and has recently listed the Similkameen River in its annual Endangered Rivers sur-vey,” he wrote in his Canyon Dam Review. “My recommendation is to oppose this project due to the loss of sovereignty proposed for the river and lack of study by the BC government of the future water needs of the Similkameen Valley in BC,” he adds.

As far as Lee McFayden’s view on the proposed dam, she had this to say. “To me, the Similkameen is the lifeblood of the valley - and like blood, it is very precious…may the river forever flow free.”Farquharson, in his review of the proposed dam adds that the lack of input from the BC government to this peculiar process is extraordinary —it is unprecedented in planning for such an important river with international implications, and he asks “Has our provincial government no interest in how our waters are used, and questions why is the future of the river being left to Fortis, the Okanogan PUD and US agricultural interests?

After the lengthy forum came to a close, Farquharson simply summed it up by saying—”The project should be opposed as it leaves Fortis and US interests in control of the river.”

The B.C. government has begun allowing “happy hour” dis-counts for alcoholic drinks, imposing minimum drink prices that force some outlets to raise their prices.

Effective this week, the minimum price for draft beer or cider in B.C. is 25 cents per fluid ounce, which puts a 12-ounce sleeve at $3, a 20-ounce pint at $5 and a 60-ounce jug at $15. Using a one-ounce minimum, the lowest permitted price for any alco-holic drink is $3.

The release of the regulations Friday was greeted with pro-tests from some pubs that were offering drink specials below that price.

The regulations also give licensed restaurants the ability to serve drinks without a food order, although their licence still

requires them to offer a full food menu. The B.C. govern-ment’s liquor policy review also levels the field between pubs and restaurants by allowing families with children into pubs at mealtimes.

The B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association issued a statement reminding its members that the new rules also allow customers to carry a drink from a lounge to an adjoining res-taurant. Licensees are also allowed to transfer small amounts of stock from one to the other if they run out of a particular product.

In a policy directive to industry associations, local govern-ments and police agencies, the government’s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch says the lower price may be applied selectively for “ladies night” specials or “team night” for players in uniform.

Minimum prices do not apply to catered events, or special occasion licences.

Not all are happy with happy hour regulations

Lee McFayden (top) and Ken Farquharson (bot-tom) were the presenters at the Forum on Rivers held on June 5 at the Senior’s Hall. Both shared their knowledge and concerns in regards to the Similkameen River and the proposed Fortis Dam.

Although as a child Carrie Allison completed only the fourth grade, I came away from a two hour visit with her feeling I’d been educated in history and wisdom. She was sent from her home in the Merritt area where she was born, to a residential school in Kamloops at age 8 and was educated there until age 12.

Carrie is now 83 and even though her experience in the residential school wasn’t as horrific as what we often hear about in the media, the memories still haunt her. A note of sadness creeps into her voice when she says, “my dreams about it are always bad. In one dream I hear a baby crying at night, but it is dark and I can’t find it.”

She pauses a moment to reflect, then continues. “I was away from home 10 months at a time. There wasn’t enough to eat and I was always hungry. We ate in the same room as the staff, and we could see they had meat on their plates. We were given only vegetable soup and one slice of bread. At Easter they gave us one egg with our meal. I knew mostly the language of my people, but I was punished if I spoke it.   In winter they made us walk to town.  My hands and feet got really cold. We weren’t allowed to talk to the boys or even look at them. We were in the classroom half a day, the rest of the day we had to work. The girls cleaned up the dormitories, the priest’s room, the hallways, play room and dining hall.”

Knowing that she looks after the diminutive white chapel situated on a bluff overlooking the Similkameen Valley, not far from Hedley going toward Keremeos, I ask why she is

still involved with the Catholic faith. Many would have turned their backs on the faith because of the pain caused by the school experiences.

“People sometimes ask me that,” she answers.  “I tell them God didn’t do that to me.  It was people. I never look back. I tell the kids to always look ahead and try to make some-thing of themselves.”

Carrie never knew her father.  Fortunately her mother was deeply committed to her family and Carrie speaks of her as a wonderful role model. “She was very small,” she says. “She tanned hides and traded them in town.  She also made gloves and moccasins.”

Carrie recalls clearly the injunc-tion of her mother to  “take care of yourself.  No drinking.  Before you go away, do the dishes and clean the house.”

Now a mother and grandmother herself, she does all she can to pass on the values of the older genera-tion. “Young kids don’t know what we went through,” she says with a perceptible hint of disappointment. “Sometimes I think we should take them back to our time. No electric-ity, no indoor bathroom. We had to pack water from the river. Mom didn’t have a washing machine so she carried her laundry to the river. She heated water in a tub there and after she washed the clothes, she hung them on branches.”

I sense now that in her mind she is reliving those times. “Sometimes we bathed in the river. In winter we heated water in the tub and bathed there. Those were happy days. I was with my family.”

Now at an age when no one would be critical if she retired to a rock-ing chair, Carrie Allison gives little indication she is ready to slow her pace.  She looks after the diminutive white cha-pel situated on a bluff overlooking the Similkameen Valley not far from Hedley.Once a year she hires boys to harvest the weeds from the adja-cent cemetery.

From her home, Carrie Allison takes time to sit and share her memo-ries with Art Martens.

I have a confession. I am a gold medal winning, first class procrastinator. Just ask our fearless publisher/editor, or my husband. I don’t get how it happens. I make a plan, set priorities and timelines and then put it in the “must do” box in my brain. Then I get out of bed and the whole thing seems to self-scramble while I’m making coffee. I’m sure you understand.

I have thought that I should listen to the little voice in my head that warns I’m head-ing in the wrong direction and that, instead of procrastinating, I should back away for a while. Maybe take a walk or have glass of water. Then when I return to the issue, maybe I’ll be ready to begin with a brilliant solution. This hits me especially when I’m involved in creative activity and drives me nuts. Besides having senior moments these days, I’ve always been easily distracted. What if I wind up on one of the dreaded bunny trails that lead to only Heaven knows where and I can’t even remember that I was procrastinating? See what I mean?

I consulted a neighbour a few years ago who had licked the problem. We would chat over the back fence from time to time - I could never figure out how she accomplished so much and still have time to chat. I asked her what her method was, which was actually a trick question. I already knew what the answer was. Sure enough, she told me she starts every day with coffee and list making. Of course the first thing she wrote was, “Make a list” which I thought was shame-less cheating but she said it gave her a feeling of accomplishment and motivation. The proof was that she ran a full time, successful business, had

a gorgeous garden and a charmingly decorated house and entertained regularly.

So, I tried the list trick. It worked all right for a short time but then I would begin to get cocky and make the lists in my head, grossly overestimating my ability to stay focused without some concrete evidence of how complicated my life was. Back to square one!

Following some impressive self-castigation, I would search for metaphysical meaning in my actions. You know, try to find a lofty reason for putting off till tomorrow whatever I really should do today. I once heard a man wandering around in a garden saying to himself, “I coulda been a genius, I coulda been a genius.” I briefly entertained the thought for myself as a legitimate excuse but I do have a basic grip on reality and realized I was seriously unqualified. I had to face it. I was a plain, garden variety capital P procrastinator.

So, I still struggle with the prob-lem. However, I have managed to work out a couple of strategies that aren’t a cure but they do help when I remember to use them. The first thing I realized is that I need a concrete deadline. Being raised in the fifties, I was taught it was not okay to let others down. If I did let folks down, at least I felt bad about it.

That’s why deadlines still usually work for me unless I’m having a passive/aggressive spell. The next thing is to break a chore up into bits that are manageable. When I’ve succeeded, I reward myself - not with food - I’m on a diet!

So, there you are! Now if I can only find the list I made yesterday...

“Being the product manager in charge of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, isn’t always easy. But that challenge is probably what I like most about my job. We built a V8 engine that’s as fuel efficient as some V6s. People didn’t think that could be done, we did it. I’m proud of that.”

The rain ceased and clouds parted long enough on Saturday, June 14 for Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists to enjoy a leisurely stroll at the scenic site of Dalby Meadows. Eighteen of us, including a visitor from Holland, were led by Tip Anderson and accompanied by everyone’s favourite golden retriever, Ben, as we explored this hidden treasure, just a few kilometres west of town. After following a trail through the bush for a short time, we sud-denly found ourselves looking out onto extensive, open meadowland, distantly surrounded by a mix of deciduous and conifer trees. The fertile fields, combined with ponds and a creek that runs through the area, provide a perfect environment for killdeer, and indeed we spotted an adult with chicks among the grasses. Scattered throughout were wildflowers:

purple penstemon and violets, pussytoes and the ubiquitous arnica. We found soopolallie and even an early strawberry plant! We came across a couple of old, wooden buildings, one of which is currently inhabited by packrats and the other by a robin with eggs in her nest. Other birds observed were ducks, cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds, chipping spar-rows, barn swallows and northern rough-winged swallows. We saw bear claw markings on a few trees, but no other wildlife except a coyote. The sun actu-ally shone on us for the last half of the walk, and we found a couple of logs on which to bask and take in a little sustenance. This was a very pleasant outing, and we thank Tip once again for his entertaining leadership.

Our next field trip will be a hike on Frank and Jean Turner’s property on Saturday, June 28. Please confirm at 295-0878 and meet at Billy’s at 9 am.

CAPRICORN: Capricorn, quickly curb any feelings of boredom by exploring a new hobby. Try taking a new fitness or art class. You’ll have chances to mingle, too.

AQUARIUS: Put the brakes on impulse buys, Aquarius. This week you may be tempted to spend more money than you have, and that will only lead to long-term financial concerns.

PISCES: Pisces, it is time to rebrand yourself. This may start with a mini-makeover or more significant changes to your life and career.

ARIES: Aries, let your creative side take over this week. Your imagination is ready to run wild, and this burst of creative energy will have long-lasting positive effects.

TAURUS: Taurus, though you are known for being a tad stubborn, this week you are open to any and all suggestions. You may surprise a few people by being so open-minded.

GEMINI: Gemini, while you may have natural leadership abilities, most of the time you do not want to pull rank. This week you may need to step things up a bit.

CANCER: Cancer, now is a good time to travel, even if it means just a quick jaunt. But if a big vacation is on the horizon, know that you will likely have a smooth trip ahead.

LEO: Your powers are magnetic this week, Leo. Others find you simply irresistible, which can bode well if you are looking for a romantic partner or want to step things up.

VIRGO: Virgo, a busy week at work will require lots of cooperation among you and your coworkers. If ever there was a time to summon your leadership abilities, now is the time.

LIBRA: Libra, many things are in disarray and you may need some help getting back to efficient living. Download an app to help you track expenses or keep tabs on your responsibilities.

SCORPIO: You are bound to be the center of attention, Scorpio. Get over any shyness early on because you will be spending time with coworkers for most of the week.

SAGITTARIUS: You will do some of your best work at home this week, Sagittarius. Spend ample time getting the house in order. A few days working from home could kickstart plans.

WOODFORD,MARYANNEMay 10, 1951 - June 6, 2014:

Maryanne was born in Prince Rupert BC, and raised in and around Stewart

BC, where she met and married her husband, William (Bill) Woodford, in 1969. They moved around BC for several years, lived in the Yukon for 10 years, relocated to Princeton area in 19 , nally to Coalmont in 19 . Maryanne is remembered by the dedicated and tireless volunteer work throughout the communities of Coalmont, Princeton and Tulameen. Most notably are the countless years she dedicated herself to the Fall Fair. She loved her pets, gardening, crafts such as knitting and crocheting and being creative with the magic tree. She also had a passion for cooking and would teach her skills to anyone who was around. Fresh bread and canning was always being prepared though out the year and there was always a hot meal on the table with more than enough to go around. Maryanne leaves memories with her family: Daughters - Jody and Sherry, Son – Garnet, Grand Children – Drew and Elyssa, Brothers – David and Richard, Sisters – Heather and Virginia, and several nephew and nieces. Not to mention everyone who had had the pleasure of knowing her. One of her most remarkable characteristics would be for Maryanne’s determination and attitude towards life events; she never would let the hard times diminish her spirit and always would have a smile on her face and have a kind word about and to everyone. Maryanne will be honoured in a Celebration of Life on the 28 June 2014, 18 Columbia Street, Coalmont BC (Behind the Hotel) starting at 2 PM. Maryanne made it quite clear that she wanted everyone to get together, listen to good music, eat and have a good time. The family would like all Memorial Contributions be donated to the Tulameen and District Fire Department.

BRENDA ARLENE, April 22, 1950 - June 4, 2014:

Brenda passed away peacefully at St. Marys Hospital with her family by her side. She is survived by

her husband Tony, daughter Tiffany (Darryl) Gower and

two grand-daughters Taya & Keeli. She is also survived by her mother Helen, brothers Dan (Debbie) and Mark (Megan) plus her extended family Margaret (John) Corlett (son Kevin & family, daughter Jennifer). Brenda was predeceased by her father Bill August 26, 2012.Brenda’s chosen profession was nurs-ing, in which she excelled. Those who knew Brenda knew the passion and ded-ication she had for her job. She gradu-ated from St. Pauls August 6, 1972 and started her career at St. Marys Hospital in Sechelt. In 1974 Brenda and Tony moved to Princeton where Tony had ac-cepted a position with Northwood Mills. After a brief move to Kamloops they re-turned to Princeton where Brenda car-ried on her career as a registered nurse at Princeton General Hospital. After her retirement in June 2010, she and Tony moved back to the Sunshine Coast to enjoy their retirement years close to family.Brenda will be deeply missed by her extended family, and many friends throughout the province and abroad. No formal memorial is set. A local celebra-tion of life will be announced in the near future.
