silver Of The sTArs – Behind The scenes

Monday 29 April, 10.30 amWhat connects Billy Connolly drinking tea with God, Sir Sean Connery with a lion rampant on his forehead and a golden teapot, studded with diamonds? They are all part of “Silver of the Stars”, Scotland’s finest collection of silver, which will be on show at the Museum of Edinburgh this spring and summer. Find out what kindled the idea of teaming 10 Scottish celebrities with 10 Scottish silversmiths and hear behind-the-scenes stories about the design and creation of each piece, and the ups and downs of installing exhibitions around the world.

Mary Michel is Director of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh, where she has worked since 2002. She oversaw the creation of “Silver of the Stars” and has set up exhibitions of the silver across the world, from Paris to St Petersburg to Beijing, and of course, back home in Scotland. She also manages the Incorporation’s charity “The Scottish Goldsmiths’ Trust”.

SiLvER Of ThE STARS – Events and Activities for all the familyTen international celebrities in the fields of film, fashion, music, theatre and literature, have been paired with ten of Scotland’s finest silversmiths. Each pair has collaborated on the design for a piece of silver on that most beautiful moment, “a drink with a close friend”, resulting in a hugely varied collection of drinking vessels that ranges from absinthe goblets to teapots to claret jugs. Join us at the museum for our packed and diverse Public Programmes.

All events are FREE with the exception of Dorothy Hogg’s adult workshop. To book events contact Margaret findlay, Public Programmes Manager on 0131 529 3963 [email protected]

There is lots to do for the whole family. Visit our activity corner and be a ‘Star’ designer. Who is your favourite star and what would you design for them? Challenge yourself with a quiz or wordsearch.
