INTRODUCTION

Water -- a necessity for life, is a rarecommodity, which ought to be utilizedwisely and safely. We make great efforts inproviding drinking water to one and all inour country. The government spendscrores and crores of rupees for providingprotected drinking water to every one in therural and urban areas.

THE NEED

WATER-tapped from rivers, ponds, wells andbore wells may be contaminated and haveinvisible micro-organisms like Coli-bacteria and E-Coli bacteria, which cause the most of thediseases in India. So just providing drinkingwater by digging bore wells and fixing pump setsand laying pipe lines don’t solve the wholeproblem of providing safe and protected drinkingwater. Atleast a small percentage of the totaloutlay for providing drinking water has to bespend for disinfection of water. All water bornediseases can be totally controlled by properlydisinfecting the drinking water.

SILVER IONIZATION

Silver Ions Ag2+ are produced from pure SilverElectrodes by passing a calculated amount ofcurrent. This is produced according to the setupin the control panel, which in turn is as per actualflow.

Concentrated solution of Silver ions in water isproduced in the water chamber and is made tomix with the flow of water in the pumping mainand then in turn we get the requiredconcentration.

HISTORY OF SILVER

The Egyptians kept their water in silver containersto prevent contamination.

The ancient Greeks were the first to discover thesanitizing power of copper.

The early American pioneers put silver coins inlarge wooden water casks to provide them withsafe drinking water on their long voyage.

During the plague-ridden middle ages, mothersknew that to place a silver spoon in an infant’smouth was a way of warding off disease.

Silver has been used as an Ayurvedic Medicine inIndia for well over 2500 years.

It was NASA that harnessed what nature alreadyknew and designed an ionization system for theirApollo flights.

HOW IT WORKS?

Silver ions produced in our system is positively chargedand most of the micro organisms are negatively charged.There is an attraction among the silver ions and the microorganisms. The silver ions disable the enzymes that microorganisms depend on to breathe and thus kills them. Silveris effective because of its capabilities of interfering withDNA production and accelerating the death phase ofbacteria and viruses.

Because of the charge in the ions they repel each other andare always in suspension. As their size is small they havea large surface area of silver per unit volume of silver.This small size with its large surface area to volume ratioenables the surface chemistry of silver.

INSTALLATION

The equipment is mounted on the wall of the pump room or anysuitable room near the pump. Two connections are taken at twodifferent points in the pumping main in such a way the existing valveis in between them as shown in figure. By using suitable pipes the 1stconnection in the pumping main is connected to the inlet of theequipment and the outlet of the equipment is connected to the 2ndconnection. The valve is throttled to that a portion of he water passesthrough the equipment. If this is not possible in big schemes anadditional ½ HP pump must be used. Necessary bleeding is done toremove any air pockets within the system.

Now the water passes from the main line to the equipment. Necessaryflow meter is fixed in this by-pass line to indicate the quantity of waterflowing through the equipment. This can be varied by adjusting theball valves at the inlet and outlet of the electrode chamber. Thequantity of water flowing through the equipment can be adjusted to 2-10 lpm.

FUNCTIONING

We have to calculate the quantity of water flowing in the main line either by knowing the rated discharge of the pump or by fillings a known volume of tank.

This rate of flow is converted into M3/hr and this value is set in the control panel of the equipment. Once this is set we can get an assured dosage of silver ions in water always.

Electrode Active: This LED will be ON when the electrode is functioning properly.

Change Electrode : This LED is ON when the electrode is nearing completion.

We have to order and keep stock of fresh electrodes.

Clean Electrode: This LED will be on when the

electrode needs cleaning.

Mode Selection : We have normal mode to discharge 0.01 mg/lit dosage of silver ions .

We have save mode to discharge0.005 mg/lit dosage of silver ions.

Periodic cleaning of electrode has to be done to doaway with accumulated dirt/Sediments / Scaleformation etc in water.

DOUBTS ABOUT SILVER

Our equipment discharges infinitesimal quantity of silverions,(0.01 mg/lit to 0.03 mg/lit) and not molecular silver.

World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested amaximum limit of silver that may be consumed by a humanbeing is 10gms.

Permissible limit is 100 ppb (micro grams/lit for drinkingwater as per EPA and 90 ppb(micro grams/lit) as perEuropean Union Standard.

In the whole life time of 70 years, considering oneconsumes 2 lts/day for all 365 days, he consumesonly 0.5gms. this is 20 times well with in thelimits of WHO.

Retention rate of silver in human and laboratoryanimals range between 0 and 10% as their ionicsize is so small.

Limitations of Silver ions as disinfectants

Hardness:When the hardness is high i.e., above 800mg/lit, it

may tend to scale up on the electrode surface orinside the chamber and will hamper theionization process.

Chloride:When the concentration of chloride is found to be

more than about 300mg/lit, it may form silverchloride and precipitate. Hence the action ofsilver ions are disturbed.

pH:Ideal pH for Water disinfection is 5-9 . Anything

below and above this limit will slow down thedisinfection.

Temperature:Our equipments are designed with Constant

current Technology, so our system will workthe same in all temperatures.

Turbidity:Turbidity definitely decreases the efficiency when

it is more than 10 NTU. More the turbidity morethe contact time.

TDS:The conductivity of water various with TDS, but as

our System is designed on constant currenttechnology, it will work the same in all TDS from100 mg/lit to 2500 mg lit.
