• Content QuestionsWhat is the name of a three-sided shape?

Summary of UnitThis presentation is to inform you of a

project our class is starting in a few weeks. Our project titled, “Silly Shapes” is all about learning shapes and how to recognize them in the world around us.

Students will collaborate with one another while learning about shapes.

Also while completing this unit, students will meet many standards as well as

objectives for their kindergarten curriculum.

Role of the TeacherAs the teacher, I will provide students with

necessary class time to complete the project. I will also be leading each group and educating them on each shape. Over the next month, we

will learn about each shape and how to determine the difference between them. I will

also provide the students with materials needed to complete the project. I will monitor their progress while encouraging them to gain

independence for their work.

Role of the ParentParents are asked to simply monitor the

child’s progress. We will do all the “research” and group work in the

classroom. Volunteers are welcomed to monitor students while in the room.

Students may also ask questions regarding shapes and the number of

sides and such. Please assist your child because we are researching by book,

computer, and people.

Role of the StudentStudent will be divided into groups where they will

research different shapes (circle, square, rectangle, and triangle). Students are to learn the difference between

the shapes and use materials around the room to create an example of each shape. Students will then give an oral presentation to the class explaining how their model represents the shapes discussed in class.

Students must also explain the differences in the shape (number of sides, etc.). Students will be graded on how well they work together, their final product, and their

understanding of the mathematical concept of shapes.

Benefits Of The Unit

• Students will meet many standards as well as objectives for their kindergarten

curriculum.

• It will provide students with an opportunity to build crucial 21st century

skills.

Standards That Will Be Met

Mathematics (2003)Grade(s): K

7.) Identify rectangles, squares, circles, and triangles.

Mathematics (2009)Grade(s): K

6.) Explain criteria used to sort objects.8.) Identify two-dimensional (plane) shapes, including

rectangle, square, circle, triangle, hexagon, trapezoid, and rhombus, and three-dimensional (solid) figures, including

sphere, cone, and cylinder.

ObjectivesFor The Unit

• Students will be able to identify shapes. • Students will use computer programs to

gather information about the basic properties of shapes.

• Students will be able to recognize shapes in the environment.

• Students will be able to recognize the shape of familiar objects.

Project-Based Learning• Encourages group collaborating work• Provides more hands-on learning and

instruction to meet each child’s need• Supports higher-order thinking and problem-

solving skills• Promotes more technology based learning and

instruction• In this class, students will collaborate with one

another while researching, creating, and designing a presentation using materials to

create a shape.
