What does Sikh Environment Day
mean to you?
Guru Har Rai Ji Gurgaddi Diwas
Guru Har Rai Ji
• 7th Guru Sahib, grandson of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and great-grandson of Guru Arjan Dev Ji
• Extremely compassionate towards all living things
• Developed Kiratpur Sahib as a town of parks and gardens, planting lots of fruit trees and flowers
• Maintained his own animal sanctuary

Pauṇ gurū pāṇī piṯā māṯā ḏẖaraṯ mahaṯ. Ḏivas rāṯ ḏuė ḏāī ḏāiā kẖėlai sagal jagaṯ.
Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother of all.
Day and night are the two caretakers, in whose lap the whole world plays.

What are Sikhs doing to help the environment?
• In April 2010 it was announced that Sri Harmander Sahib will be moving to solar energy.
• Gurdwara Sahib Fremont was the first Gurdwara in the US to move to solar energy.

Late last year, the Fremont Sikh Gurdwara began a
composting project.
Many Gurdwaras have also started planting
fruit trees and vegetables on their land to be used for
langar.

• The new Gurdwara building will be solar powered shortly after completion.
• The new langer hall will be equipped to handle stainless steel plates and glasses.
How do we help our Gurdwara become more Earth friendly?
• Recycling
• Installing energy efficient lighting
• Use the air driers
• Use the stainless steel plates
• Plant a tree
