The Fresh Air

Fund

Signs of summer are everywhere… in our hearts and throughout the year.

Since 1877, more than 1.8 million of New York City’s neediest children have benefitted from free summer experiences in the country through The Fresh Air Fund. The programs provide thousands of boys and girls with carefree, sunny days and beautiful starlit nights, along with year-round support for educational and career goals.

The Fund’s tried-and-true programs grow, new initiatives are launched, and year-round activities are strengthened. In 2014, close to 9,000 children benefitted from the Fresh Air experience through visits to the homes of volunteer host families in 13 states and Canada, camp adventures in upstate New York, and educational programs supported by volunteer tutors and mentors.

new friends. And that list of favorite activities has remained the same for over a century.

Signs of summer are found in the hearts and homes of close to 4,000 volunteer hosts who welcome their Fresh Air visitors with open arms. In 2014, The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program gave New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. The bond of friendship is so strong that 65% of the youngsters are invited back to stay with the same host families, every year. Hosts say their own families benefit as much from the program as the Fresh Air children.

When leaves turn brilliant colors in autumn, snow falls in backyards and flowers begin to bloom, volunteers are planning for Fresh Air summers. The Volunteer Host Family Program is supervised through more than 300 local volunteer committees in regional areas, called Friendly Towns. Volunteers recruit, screen and interview new hosts and renew the commitment of participating families. In the summer, volunteer leaders are available 24 hours a day to support hosts and Fresh Air children.

In New York City, children register at a network of more than 90 social service and community organizations. The Fund continues to expand its Immigrant Outreach Project by reaching out to all of New York City’s culturally diverse communities to allow as many children as possible to enjoy summers in the country.

Please visit The Fund’s website at www.freshair.org.

Songs around campfires on a starry night in the wilderness.

In 2014, The Fresh Air Fund had a highly successful camping season at its five camps in Fishkill, New York. Three thousand boys and girls participated in free recreational and educational activities for two weeks or more. Campers look forward to hiking on wilderness trails, swimming,

playing games on grassy fields, visiting the planetarium, picking vegetables from the camp garden and milking a cow at the Model Farm.

The five camps are located on The Fund’s Sharpe Reservation, 2,300 acres of wilderness property with lakes, forests and marked trails. The Fresh Air camps are: Camp Anita Bliss Coler for girls, ages nine to 15; Camp Hayden-Marks Memorial for boys, ages nine to 12; Camp Tommy for 12- to 15-year-old boys; Camp Hidden Valley for boys and girls with and without special needs, ages eight to 12, and Camp Mariah for boys and girls in 7th to 9th grades, part of the Career Awareness Program. Camp Mariah is named after Board member Mariah Carey, and Camp Tommy is named after Tommy Hilfiger, for their very generous support.

On weekends and school breaks, young people enjoy year-round camping. Fresh Air campers participate in hands-on, interactive nature studies at The Fund’s Sharpe Reservation Environmental Study Center. The wilderness property provides an outdoor classroom for informal learning and inspires an appreciation of nature. Camp facilities are also utilized throughout the year by a variety of organizations for weekend camping, day trips, conferences and retreats.

I found out what it means to be a leader. #SignsOfSummer

Adolescents in The Fund’s Teen Leadership Program explore their futures, recognize their responsibility for educational and career planning, and overcome perceived limitations of ethnicity and socioeconomic status. New forms of self-expression are discovered through writing, music, dance, poetry and public speaking. Teen leaders also participate in weekend camping and community service projects. In 2014, close to 200 teens, ages 13 to 17, took part in communication and literacy-building activities.

The Fund’s Precious Center for Teen Leadership at Camp ABC guides inner-city girls in developing leadership skills and focusing on their future goals. The Center is supported by a very generous grant from The Gary Magness Family Foundation. Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness were inspired by producing the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.

The year-round Young Women’s Giving Circle teaches girls about philanthropy. The teens learn about America’s culturally diverse tradition of giving back to their communities through private contributions. In 2014, the girls presented donations to the Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries and AIDS Walk New York.

Opening up horizons of exploration and opportunities.

The Fresh Air Fund’s Career Awareness Program expands educational and career options for adolescents. Boys and girls, 7th, 8th and 9th graders, participate in a three-year educational, recreational and camping program in New York City and at Camp Mariah.

College Connections is preparing me for my SATs, and I know more about college than my peers because of the program. #SignsOfSummer

The Career Awareness Program includes: Camp Mariah, The Fund’s Career Awareness Camp, for three and a half weeks in the summer; weekend camping trips in the fall and spring; Career Fair in New York City in the spring; tutoring throughout the school year, and job shadowing visits to businesses in New York City.

Through a structured curriculum, the Career Awareness Program is designed to improve literacy and critical-thinking abilities and enhance computer skills. Volunteer tutors, mentors, instructors, guest speakers and counselors guide Fresh Air students.

During the summer, close to 300 boys and girls attend The Fund’s Camp Mariah, Career Awareness Camp. In addition to traditional camp activities, career campers explore a wide range of fields including science and technology, communications and health and fitness. The Career Awareness Camp is named in honor of Board member Mariah Carey for her generous support.

The Fund’s Secondary Schools Connections assists 7th and 8th grade career awareness students in the high school selection process. Students are helped with research and applications to specialized public, private and parochial schools. College Connections helps 10th, 11th and 12th grade students with the resources and assistance needed to enter and complete college. The program includes selecting, enrolling, financially preparing for and facing the transition into a successful college career at the student’s school of choice. Volunteer mentors are assigned to students in the 10th grade, continuing with them through college graduation and moving forward on their career paths.

Corporate volunteer teams play a meaningful role in the lives of Fresh Air children. In New York City, volunteers host job shadowings, where students experience the world of work and learn more about their career options. Corporate teams take part in community events throughout the five boroughs to help register children for Fresh Air programs. At The Fund’s camps in Fishkill, New York, volunteers participate in clean-up projects and help out as “Counselors for a Day,” leading sports and arts and crafts projects.

In 2014, teams included Advent Software, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, BlackRock, Calvin Klein, Con Edison, Cravath, Swaine & Moore, ESPN/Disney, Equinox, Estée Lauder, Goldman Sachs, Google, Kenneth Cole, Morgan Stanley, NASDAQ OMX, Shake Shack, Starcom, Titan Tea and TJX. Special thanks to HBO for hosting the annual Volunteer Recognition Party and to Con Edison for hosting the annual Career Fair.

Chairman’s Message

The Fresh Air Fund plays a significant role in enriching the lives of close to 9,000 New York City children annually. When snow blankets the city streets and playgrounds, Fresh Air boys and girls reflect on their summer experiences and look forward to laughing, smiling and playing outdoors with new friends.

Many of our children have never left home before, and their journey of discovery begins in the backyards of volunteer host families in 13 states and Canada or the wide-open fields at our five camps in upstate New York. Young people are also supported by year-round educational initiatives guided by volunteer mentors in New York City.

We meet compassionate people in our Volunteer Host Family Program who are making a real difference in the world, one child at a time. Our volunteer family experience is shared by host parents, their sons and daughters, neighbors and friends with communities opening their hearts and homes to welcome Fresh Air children. A host parent explained, “We know the program impacts our Fresh Air child to his core. But secretly and quietly, it impacts our family even more.”

Camp adventures take place on The Fund’s 2,300-acre wilderness property with spectacular lakes and wilderness trails. I love visiting camp each summer. In 2014, I spent the afternoon sitting in on classes at Camp Mariah and playing chess with our campers. And they had no mercy when it came time for checkmate!

Campers are very enthusiastic about hands-on participation in the Nutrition Education Program. We are in the process of improving our Model Farm, organic garden and Nutrition Education Center, where children learn about the benefits of a diet based on healthy food choices. Inner-city boys and girls enjoy farm-to-table learning by watching their food grow, picking vegetables and preparing nutritious snacks. They milk a cow, harvest honey and gather eggs from the chicken coops, all unforgettable activities.

In New York City, we are stepping up our efforts to support Fresh Air adolescents on the path to achieving their educational and career goals. Through College Connections, young people benefit from the guidance provided by volunteer mentors who assist them in the college admissions process and help them along the way to graduation and beyond.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to our outstanding volunteers, staff members, friends, supporters and my colleagues on the Board of Directors. Thank you so much for your steadfast support.

With all best wishes,

William P. LauderChairman

Executive Director’s Report

Since 1877, more than 1.8 million of New York City’s neediest children have benefitted from free summer experiences through The Fresh Air Fund. The signs of summer live in the hearts and minds of our Fresh Air children throughout the year, when they dream about backyard barbecues, swimming in lakes, s’mores around campfires and carefree days with new friends.

In order to serve as many children as possible, The Fund works diligently year round to recruit more host families, support our camping programs and raise funds.

In 2014, the Annual Spring Gala at Chelsea Piers was a “Salute to Our American Hero,” Board member and Global Superstar Mariah Carey. We honored Mariah for her support and commitment to our programs and celebrated the 20th

Anniversary of Camp Mariah, the centerpiece of The Fund’s Career Awareness Program. The evening was an extraordinary success and raised close to $1.5 million.

Congratulations to our Dinner Chairs William P. Lauder and Chip and Jennifer Weiss, and Dinner Committee Members June Ambrose, Emily Blavatnik, Tyson and Kimberly Chandler, Victor Cruz and Elaina Watley, Dee and Tommy Hilfiger, Barbara and Dan Kaplan, Christine and Richard Mack, Penny Marshall, Hans and Kate Morris, Susan and Donald Newhouse, Betsy and Paul Shiverick, and Kimberly E. Steward. Special thanks to Al Roker, who acted as our wonderful emcee and delighted over 700 guests.

The Fresh Air Fund Council, a group of dedicated young New Yorkers, sponsored our “Snow Ball,” the Annual Fall Benefit and Silent Auction at Chelsea Piers. More than 850 partygoers attended, and the event raised over $690,000. Congratulations to our outstanding Chairs Isabelle B. Krusen, Tamie Peters Thomas and Richard D. Thomas, Caroline Cummings Rafferty and Nicholas K. Rafferty, Megan Petrie Ramm and Bryan Ramm and Kimberly E. Steward, along with our Vice Chairs April Grunow, Courtney Alexis Langer, Amanda K. Starbuck, Louise Tabbiner, and Kristen and Diego Urrutia. We appreciate the generous support of our corporate sponsors.

The “Spring Fling” at Marquee, designed for young professionals, was a high-spirited evening with more than 400 guests. Special thanks to Chairs Peter H. Alden, Lawrence T. Lawler, Whitney Lee, Brittany Mills Reid and Vice Chairs Scott B. Margolis, Dana M. Pollock, Jillian Reid, Amir Sharif-Emami and Harrison Waterstreet. This annual spring event attracts new volunteers, friends and supporters.

Before participating in the Fresh Air Fund camping program, Edgar Saavedra and his two brothers spent summer days inside their home in the Bronx or in the library. Their neighborhood park was too crowded for playing soccer, so once or twice a week their parents put the boys on a bus for a 45-minute ride to a safer, greener park. “In the city, you can’t do much,” Edgar said. “There are only buildings. There’s no grass.”

But Edgar’s summers changed two years ago when his mom registered with the fund’s camping program. Edgar, now 10, spent a week with the Kuenster-Staples family, his hosts in Copake Falls, N.Y., about 100 miles north of New York City. To his elation, Edgar was outdoors every day, horseback riding, fishing, swimming and strawberry picking, surrounded for the first time by open space and grass. The next summer Edgar returned for 10 days.

The fund hopes to reach 9,000 New York City children this year, with 4,000 staying with host families across 13 states and Canada and 3,000 going to summer camps. An additional 2,000 will take part in year-round programs. A two-week stay with a host family costs the fund $940; a session at camp, $1,656. These programs are available only to New York City children whose families cannot afford such trips. The fund hopes to raise $11.1 million by the end of September.

Tax-deductible donations can be sent to the Fresh Air Fund, 633 Third Ave., 14th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10017, or made online at www.freshair.org. Families who wish to be hosts can write to the same address, fill out a host inquiry online or call (800) 367-0003.

GIFTS AND BEQUESTS are an important source of funding for The Fresh Air Fund. A gift to

The Fresh Air Fund gives disadvantaged children the opportunity to enjoy camping programs

and country vacations with families in Friendly Towns. While gifts for specific purposes are

always welcome, The Fund is especially grateful for unrestricted gifts.

If a bequest is made to The Fund, the suggested language is:

“ I give and bequeath the sum of $__________ (or_____% of my residuary estate)

to The Fresh Air Fund for its general corporate purposes.”

The Fresh Air Fund is a not-for-profit corporation and is tax-exempt under section 501 (c) 3 of the

Internal Revenue Code. Gifts are tax-deductible in the manner prescribed by law.

For additional information, please contact: Department of Development The Fresh Air Fund 633 Third Avenue, 14th Floor New York, New York 10017 Telephone: (212) 897-8900
