Signs of SpringI am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.~Isaiah 43:19 We have pin-oaks in our yard. That means that raking leaves in the fall is somewhat meaningless. Most of the leaves fall between November and March and get covered by snow. Why bother? So, on a beauful Monday at the beginning of spring break, Mark got us all moving, and we started geng the leaves raked. I was excited to go get a leaf vacuum! It made it easier to get the leaves out from between the plants and bushes. And in doing so, I was surprised to discover, underneath several inches of leaves, green shoots emerging. Thats my favorite part of spring—when the earth starts whispering a new song in the air. The ground begins revealing, lile by lile, the new life that had been hidden and buried underneath. The grass slowly turns from shades of brown to tones of green. New buds peek out from tree branches, tesng the air to see if its me. There is a sense of emerging and ancipaon— perhaps the kind of ancipaon we should be experiencing in Advent but just cant quite muster between snow driſts and icy winds. Signs of spring mean new life and new hope. They mean that what was once can be again. They mean that nothing is truly lost. They mean RESURRECTION! Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. What was planted in the fall is preparing to bear fruit. What was only death in the dark earth is becoming life in the light. I saw a meme recently that said, When it feels as if you are being buried, perhaps you are being planted. What a great view of resurrecon promise! What is buried/planted is done so in order to bear fruit. The me of death is merely preparaon for new life. As we gear up for this Easter season, I want to encourage you to share your own Signs of Spring with the community. Maybe its something that you can bring in and place on the altar-scape in the Atrium. Or maybe its something you can write down—something youve witnessed and want to tell others about. You see, this is pracce for how we witness the good news of the Risen Christ to the world. What are the Signs of Spring—the evidence of new life—that you see through the lens of faith? What is lying under the dead leaves of lost dreams and broken promises just waing to burst forth and bloom? What is pushing through the dirt of grief and death, revealing hope and resurrecon? What is blossoming on the branches of our ordinary and busy days, tesng the air for the right me to shout its colors to the world? Lets start looking for Signs of Spring now—when they are easy to find. Lets pracce the habits of faith when the colors are vibrant and the air is ripe with promise. For soon enough, the leaves will be turning, the wind will be turning, the seasons will be turning, and it will feel as if hope is buried under piles of debris and snow. That is when the habit of seeing Signs of Spring will be needed most. In Christ, Pastor Tobi White OSLC | April 2018 To walk with Christ and neighbor, healing brokenness together. In this Issue... “Signs of Spring” “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a

We have pin-oaks in our yard. That means that raking leaves in the fall is somewhat meaningless. Most of the leaves fall between November and March and get covered by snow. Why bother? So, on a beautiful Monday at the beginning of spring break, Mark got us all moving, and we started getting the leaves raked. I was excited to go get a leaf vacuum! It made it easier to get the leaves out from between the plants and bushes. And in doing so, I was surprised to discover, underneath several inches of leaves, green shoots emerging.

That’s my favorite part of spring—when the earth starts whispering a new song in the air. The ground begins revealing, little by little, the new life that had been hidden and buried underneath. The grass slowly turns from shades of brown to tones of green. New buds peek out from tree branches, testing the air to see if it’s time. There is a sense of emerging and anticipation—perhaps the kind of anticipation we should be experiencing in Advent but just can’t quite muster between snow drifts and icy winds.

Signs of spring mean new life and new hope. They mean that what was once can be again. They mean that nothing is truly lost. They mean RESURRECTION! “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” What was planted in the fall is preparing to bear fruit. What was only death in the dark earth is becoming life in the light.

I saw a meme recently that said, “When it feels as if you are being buried, perhaps you are being planted.” What a great view of resurrection promise! What is buried/planted is done so in order to bear fruit. The time of death is merely preparation for new life.

As we gear up for this Easter season, I want to encourage you to share your own Signs of Spring with the community. Maybe it’s something that you can bring in and place on the altar-scape in the Atrium. Or maybe it’s something you can write down—something you’ve witnessed and want to tell others about.

You see, this is practice for how we witness the good news of the Risen Christ to the world. What are the Signs of Spring—the evidence of new life—that you see through the lens of faith? What is lying under the dead leaves of lost dreams and broken promises just waiting to burst forth and bloom? What is pushing through the dirt of grief and death, revealing hope and resurrection? What is blossoming on the branches of our ordinary and busy days, testing the air for the right time to shout its colors to the world?

Let’s start looking for Signs of Spring now—when they are easy to find. Let’s practice the habits of faith when the colors are vibrant and the air is ripe with promise. For soon enough, the leaves will be turning, the wind will be turning, the seasons will be turning, and it will feel as if hope is buried under piles of debris and snow. The Quest Inside for Uniting Spirit (Q.I. for U.S.)

Daily Spiritual Practice: Faithfulness “If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25

In her book titled, “Real Kids, Real Faith: Practices for Nurturing Children’s Spiritual Lives,” Karen Marie Yust describes three central themes outlining a basic way for understanding spiritual formation. The first is that faith is given to us as a “gracious act of God”. The second is that “faith informs and transforms” our lives; therefore, our engagement in spir-itual practices advances “faith’s transformative work because they link us with God.” The third is “that our best human response to faith is ‘faithfulness,’ in which we live in ways that suggest the faith God has given us has affected all as-pects of our life fully.”

While “faithful” is an adjective, “faithfulness” is a noun. So, what does it mean to be “faithful”? It means: loyal, con-stant, and steadfast, or “true to the facts or the original”. “Faithfulness” is the quality of being faithful.

I invite you to be true to the original definition of faithfulness this month. Take time each day to link yourself with God, to be “guided by the Spirit”. If faith is given to you through God’s grace, and faith gives you information and transfor-mation, then spend time this month noticing and demonstrating God’s gift to you.

In your day-to-day life, where do you see God? How do you show God’s role in your life? Who is God to you? What helps you notice God in all things? When does God take precedence in your life? How are you faithful? How do you demonstrate faithfulness?

These are questions we cannot always answer on our own. We might not even know the answers ourselves. Look to God as you spend time pondering your faithfulness. According to Martin Luther, to be a person of faith, to be in rela-tionship with God, one must be “a person taught by God”. Let us allow our “faithfulness” to be how God is teaching us.

This month I pray for God’s grace to inform you and transform you. I pray you allow God in to teach you. To reach you. To show you God affects all aspects of your life. Fully.

Watoto Children’s Choir coming to OSLC in May! Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled extensively since 1994, shar-ing a message of hope for Africa’s orphans and widows. To date, the choir has toured six continents and performed to enthralled audienc-es in schools, retirement homes, churches, parliaments, state houses and royal palaces. The Watoto Children’s Choir concert acts as a fundraising event for Watoto.

Each child in the Watoto Children’s Choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents and now lives in a Watoto village. The experience of travelling on a choir helps the children to develop confidence and boldness, as well as broadening their worldview.

Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission by sharing personal stories, music and dance. While on the road, the children act as advocates for the millions of other Afri-can children who have experienced the same heartbreaking pain and suffering as them.

Join the choir in worship May 13 for Mother’s Day at both Sunday services. If you can house one or more children, please contact Julie Cross at [email protected]. We’ll also be looking to provide cer-

tain meals for them while they are with us. More details to come.

A Note from Outreach Ministry: Peacemaking Workshop

The 36th Annual Peacemaking Workshop, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, Leonard Pitts, Jr., will be held at First United Methodist Church, 2723 North 50th Street, Sunday, April 15th. The Coalition is dedicated to promoting peace and justice through conferences and workshops, and welcomes all religious traditions.

Pitts, speaking at 1:30 p.m., will examine “witness bearing” for this workshop and will explore the experience of standing with those we don’t know, for peace and justice. "Standing with Oth-ers," addresses what happens in the lives of those around us when we do not speak out, and how to have civil exchange with those who have a different point of view from our own. For more information on the full workshop or to register, go to www.firstumclincoln.org. You do not need to register if you plan to only attend the keynote address by Leonard Pitts.
