You can practically feel therush of adrenalin as the Mach5 zooms across the racetrackas Speed Racer approaches thefinish line. With an all-starcast including Emile Hirsch,Christina Ricci and MatthewFox, coupled with never-before-used revolutionary tech-nology and intense actionsequences, Speed Racer is oneof the most anticipated filmsof the season.

Written and directed by theWachowski brothers whobrought us The Matrix trilogy,the movie is based on the clas-sic 1960s Japanese animatedseries. It tells the story of ayoung racecar driver namedSpeed (Hirsch) who was borninto a racing family—hisfather, Pops Racer (JohnGoodman) designs racecarsand his brother Rex died

tragically in a racing accident.When Speed discovers thatsome of the biggest races arebeing fixed by a handful ofruthless moguls, he sets out tosave the sport he loves with thehelp of his girlfriend Trixie(Ricci) and his one-time rivalRacer X (Fox).

Hirsch, who had just fin-ished starring in Into the Wild,went from roughing it in therugged outdoors to spendingevery day in a studio filmingin front of a green screen. “Itwas really like being in asauna and then jumping in anice bath,” he told EntertainmentTonight. Hirsh spent about 16

days riding a mechanical armthat substituted for his racecar.“I’d sit here and this thing wouldthrow me around and it couldspin me 360 degrees,” he said.“It was like riding a mechanicalbull on mechanical steroids.”

But the film isn’t all aboutflashy special effects—it’salso about the relationshipsbetween some pretty coolcharacters. “I get to play areally awesome, strong girl that I think people will really like,”Ricci told cinemablend.com.“She’s sort of like the girlI always wanted to be. She kungfu fights, she does gymnastics,she races, she flies a helicop-ter. But she has a special outfitfor each activity and is stillincredibly girly and always haslipstick on.”

Whether you’re there for theawesome visuals or the heart-felt storyline, expect to seesomething completely new.“I’ve always wanted to makea film like Speed Racer,” Hirschsaid, “A really big summermovie that had something dif-ferent than the normal bigsummer blockbusters. n his new film, GetSmart, funnyman SteveCarell assures audiencesthat his super spy actionskills will kick butt. “[Ihad the best] attitudegoing into this movie:Just try not to make it

suck,” he quipped to MTV.com. Withthat line of thinking, and with the useof a few spy gadgets, Carell’s char-acter Maxwell Smart is determined toprove he’s got what it takes to save theworld, along with the help of AnneHathaway’s character Agent 99. “Ididn’t get as many gadgets, so I wasjealous,” Hathaway admitted toMTV.com. “But I have a special com-pact that releases gas, so we can seelasers. And I also have something thatexplodes that’s very unexpected, butI’ll save that one for the suspense.”

In Get Smart (based on the popular1965 TV series), Carell plays a lowon the totem poll anaylist who’sdreamt of being a spy at his agencyControl. When Control is attacked,and most of the spies’ covers arecompromised, Smart gets promotedto super spy status, although he has no experience. “Essentially he’s a tech nerd,” Carell told MTV.com of his character. “But his goal anddream has always been to becomean agent. But he’s never stepped up.But some things transpire thatenable him to step into that position.He finally gets his chance, at sort ofan advanced age.”

Smart has always dreamt of work-ing in the field alongside his idol,superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne “TheRock” Johnson). “I get my ass kickedby the Rock!” Carell revealed. “So,that’s pretty cool.” But instead, Smartis partnered with the only other agentwhose identity has not been compro-mised: the lovely-but-lethal veteranAgent 99 (Hathaway). Their first mis-sion is to thwart the latest plot forworld domination by the evil crimesyndicate known as KAOS.

Hathaway admits she was superexcited to play this character. “Thiswas a role a lot of actresses chaseddown,” she told MTV.com. “A lot ofgirls wanted to play this role. It soundsvery obnoxious to say it, because a lotof the people in the movie watched theoriginal series [when it was on theair], but I used to watch it on Nick atNite when I was a kid. I have a cousinwho’s two months older than me, andwe used to play it together. I’d be 99,and he’d be Maxwell, and we’d runaround New Jersey and pretend wewere battling KAOS.”

Now, Hathaway is re-living herchildhood by actually filling the shoesof character Agent 99, in which sheand Smart are faced with the heavytask of saving the world, served with a side of laugh-out-loud comedy.

he last time we left the Caped Crusader he thought he’d rubbed out the thugs andcleaned up the streets in Batman Begins. Buta new enemy with a twisted sense of humouris laughing his way through Gotham City,

with treacherous plans to wreak havoc and ultimatelydestroy Batman.

This time around, Batman (Christian Bale) has teamedup with Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) andDistrict Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to createan alliance that aims to destroy the organized crime that has infested Gotham. The band of crime fighters is successful until they encounter a disturbed criminalmastermind, The Joker (Heath Ledger), who threatens tosend the city back into chaos. Caped Crusader into a frenzied search to find themakeup-wearing madman before he can complete his plan.

Buzz surrounding the late Ledger’s performance indi-cates his turn as The Joker won’t soon be forgotten. “It’sstunning, it’s iconic,” director Christopher Nolan tells TheNew York Times. “It’s just going to blow people away.”

The addition of one of the series’ more popular char-acters could make The Dark Knight the finest Batmanmovie yet. “Now that we’ve made [Batman] a characterof substance, I have no problem with him competingwith someone else,” Bale tells Empire magazine. “Andthat’s going to make better entertainment and a bettermovie, which is great.”

Absent from the sequel is Katie Holmes, who wasn’table to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes due to schedul-ing conflicts. Filling her spot as Bruce Wayne’s loveinterest and childhood friend is Maggie Gyllenhaal.Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) and butler AlfredPennyworth (Michael Caine) are also back as Wayne’sclosest friends.

Fans will notice that Batman sports an improved look.The newly designed Batsuit will feature more than 200 individual pieces of armour that will allow BruceWayne greater mobility as he tries to battle crime. Itwill also be the first time the Batsuit has been createdto allow Batman the ability to move his head from sideto side. Another new addition to the Batcave will be themysterious new hi-tech vehicle, the Batpod.
