MSJC Forensics Speech & Debate Team Win 6 Medals

MSJC Debate Team members Josh Slama (left) and Cole Rauch (right) with their medals.

Left to right: Jennifer Borton (Faculty Advisor), Hope Graham (Executive Secretary), Maria Hernandez (Fellowship Officer), Janet Plata (Public Relations Officer), Jessica Rook (Member), Crystal Bryan (Faculty Advisor), Manisha Singh (Scholarship Officer), Michael Hogan (Leadership Officer), Michael Carrier (President), Stephanie Velona (Faculty Advisor)

MSJC men’s basketball player Tre Nottingham was named First Team All-State in March.

Honors student Hope Graham, of Temecula, was elected to serve as vice president of communications for Phi Theta Kappa’s Nevada/California region during the convention that was held March 10-12. The college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, called Beta Delta Omega, earned Five-Star Chapter status. This is the highest level a chapter can attain and represents the chapter’s “progress from local, campus involvement to regional involvement to international involvement,” according to the Phi Theta Kappa website. The chapter also earned first place in the prestigious Hallmark award for its Honors in Action project titled “Human Trafficking: Myth and Reality.”

This year, MSJC inducted 382 new members, the highest membership in the history of MSJC. To be eligible for PTK membership, MSJC students must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.5 for 12 or more degree applicable units. Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for the development of student service, leadership, scholarship, and fellowship through organized honors society activities including campus blood drives, leadership conferences, scholarly lectures, and food drives for local families in need.

Former MSJC men’s basketball players Lavon Harper and Sam Natt earned an NAIA Division II National title in March along with their teammates at Union College in Kentucky.

Union defeated Cornerstone College from Michigan in the Championship game 72-69. Natt was a member of the MSJC teams from 2011-13, while Harper played for the Eagles from 2012-14. Natt played 10 minutes in the championship game for Union scoring 2 points. In the quarter-finals of the National Tournament Natt scored 11 points in his team’s victory and in the semi-finals had 9 points. Harper was having a strong season as well, before a season ending injury sidelined him three weeks ago.

Along their way to the NAIA title, Union pulled off a one point victory over The College of Idaho in a second round Regional game. The College of Idaho featured another former MSJC player, Roosevelt Adams. Adams, a local product from Hemet West Valley HS, played for the Eagles from 2014-16.

One other former Eagle also played in the NAIA Regional Tournament. Blake O’Donnell, who also played for the Eagles from 2014-16, represented Eastern Oregon in the tournament.

Debate team members Cole Rauch and Josh Slama placed 2nd in the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association Spring Championships at Cal State Long Beach in February. Destiny Caperon placed second in novice persuasive speaking and Addison Martin was a finalist in novice impromptu speaking. Rauch was also the top speaker in the novice parliamentary debate category while Slama was fourth. These represent the first six medals that the team has won since it started competing in 2015. Department of Communication Assistant Professor Ron Newman serves as the Director of Forensics and the team is coached this year by Whitney Shaw at the San Jacinto Campus and Renee Orton at the Menifee Valley Campus.
