These release notes describe release version 3.x of Sightline Enterprise Data Manager (EDM).

Introduction Sightline EDM provides centralized data collection, alerting, archiving, and summarization for data provided by Sightline Power Agents and Interface Agents. EDM also provides a web-based interface for data visualization, Root Cause Analysis and Agent Administration and configuration.

Power Agent Compatibility This release supports data collection, alerting, archiving and summarization for all data sources provided by the Sightline Power Agents and Interface Agents. This release supports web-based Agent Administration for Power Agents running a supported version of the SLAA Listener. For specific versions, contact your Sightline support representative.

New Features

VMware Connection Enhancements (#22397, 22474, 22512) Enhanced VMWare data source to for better vMotion support.

Access Control List (ACL) for Views (#21893, 21894) Users can now control access to views by editing an access control list on each view.

Sub-Views Users can now create sub-views under parent views.

Clairvor Enhancements Added noise reduction feature to eliminate uninteresting correlation results. Added the ability to add alerts from a Clairvor pop up chart. Enhanced Clairvor report printing.

Show Connections that an Alert Group is assigned to (#21461) Users can display a list of connections that are assigned the same alert group.

Export and Import Report Templates, Charts, Alert Groups and Expressions Export saves to an XML file that can be imported from the EDM UI.

Average Alert Duration The Alerts tab now displays the average alert duration for all triggered alerts.

Resizable Left-Side Bar Left-side menu bar is now resizable, as well as collapsible.

Default Data Retention Policy Enhancements EDM installations now provide the ability to store 25 months of 30-minute data, 3 months of 10-minute data, and 14 days of live data.

Changes

Fixed Triggered Alerts Issue in EDM 3.3 (#22845) Root cause is related to the additional OIDs for post-alert SNMP processing, as the alerts are interrupted when JBoss is restarted. A DCS 3.3.1 patch is available to resolve the issue.

Fixed User Interface Issues when Running with Japanese Language Settings (#22724) Certain areas of the UI did not support double-byte characters. A fix has been implemented to resolve the issue.

Action when Alert Clears (#22231) Capability to send SNMP traps and email notification when an alert has cleared.

Event Data Navigation Broken after Opening Event Data Pop-out (#22701) A fix has been implemented to allow proper event data navigation within the pop-out screen.

Slow Response when Trying to Edit Alert Groups (#22566) A fix has been implemented to increase the performance time of an alert group window to display.

Expanded the length of the command action field for configured alerts from to 2048 Command action field now supports 2048 characters, increased from 64.

Running EDM in German Locale Causes Correlation to Not Display Correctly (#22741) A fix has been implemented to properly display correlation results in EDM on a system running German locale.

Recursive Expression Evaluation had Problems in Certain Cases A fix has been implemented to resolve evaluation of recursive expressions.

EDM 3.2 (April 2014)

New Features

Views Enhancements Columns on default views can now be modified.

Alert Enhancements Users can make notes on an alert to track work that's being done to clear the alert. Modifications to Alert thresholds will now take effect without restarting connections.

Clairvor Enhancements Event data on Clairvor report can be navigated. The time ranges for chart and correlation now match.

The default time range has been expanded. "Signal strength" icons have been added to indicate strength of correlation. User can

toggle between this and the Pearson’s r value.

Quick Chart Enhancements Show event data on quick chart. A quick chart now displays event data and allows users to navigate the data back and

forth. Added scaling to charts. You can now select to autoscale based on the highest value or

provided a custom scale on chart definitions

Report Enhancements Significant performance improvements on report rendering Can assign connections to each chart on a report individually Can assign different time ranges to each chart on a report On the fly reports (TBD) when the user clicks on a data source a default report will

appear. Added printing of a report. There is a new printer icon on reports. When you click it, it

pops out in print mode. You can then use your browser print function to print the report Dropped support for Adobe Flash. All report and charts are now HTML5. The report refresh option no longer repaints the entire screen. This results in a much

faster refresh Added scaling to charts. You can now select to autoscale based on the highest value or

EDM UI Significant improvements to the UI performance Localized the UI for the Japanese market. The language can be selected on the log in

page. Changed report printing to use the same print window as the rest of EDM

Security Added Security Log to EDM for tracking user actions. The new log can be viewed by clicking Settings-EDM Logs and then opening the security.log

Expressions New default expressions have been added. These are useful for capacity planning purposes

Changes

Unavailable DCS cannot be modified or deleted (#21456) If the DCS is marked unavailable, it cannot be deleted or modified from the EDM Web GUI, as the checkbox in front of the DCS entry on the Data Collector page is inactive. This has been fixed.

Agent SID not taken over by EDM connection discovery (#21664) When creating discovered connections, EDM does not take over the complete SID configured in the Power Agent. Instead, only the first three characters of the hostname are filled into the respective field of the database record. This has been fixed.

Configuration changes are not logged separately and therefore, cannot be audited (#21897) Legal regulations require that you can retrieve the information, in order to audit who these changes were made by and when they occurred. This has been fixed.

Assign different connections per chart on a report (#21963) Users can now assign a different data source for each chart on an EDM report. This has been fixed.

Refresh countdown not reinitiated on reopening quick chart (#22381) The Refresh interval is the selection dropdown is taken over from a previous call of the quick chart dialog, but the countdown is not displayed and the refresh never happens, until reselecting a refresh interval. This has been fixed.

Naming conventions similar to the metrics for expressions (#22393) Unable to create expressions using special characters. EDM would display a warning that illegal characters were being used. This has been fixed to accept characters so that naming conventions can be similar to the expressions created and vice versa.

Request the ability to set scales on charts/reports (#21602) Tried changing the scale on a report/graph. This functionality has now been included. This has been fixed.

Unable to grab the caption bar and move that dialog box (#22394) When a dialog box is open, one is unable to grab the caption bar and move the dialog box. This capability was not working. This has been fixed.

Custom Fields showing blank after connection created & filled (#22412) The Custom fields drop-down is inconsistent. Specific fields that had been populated and set were showing up as blanks in the connections details. When attempting to edit the fields, different defaults were displayed when trying to cancel and return to edit the connection details. This has been fixed.

SNMP validation fails (#22493) Error in SNMP xml file appears, explaining that ‘xml is not valid’ and that ‘invalid content’ was found within the metric class. This was a validation problem with the SNMP agent. This has been fixed.

Filter Settings cannot be changed (#22585) After changing metric list and pressing "Save", the UI does not come back. Checking the filter metric list after having re-logged in shows the intended changes not to be applied to metric list. This has been fixed.

Known Issues When upgrading DCS, JMX connections will not resume their state correctly This is because of refactoring done to support JDBC agentless connections. There will be ClassNotFound exceptions in the startup log. For those JMX connections that failed to resume, they will need to manually be started.

Upgrades from EDM 2.2 are not supported EDM 3.2 does not support upgrading from EDM 2.2 because of database schema refactoring that

occurred. When migrating from 2.2, upgrade to 3.1, log in, then upgrade to 3.2.

JBoss connections will drop if cannot reconnect after 20 attempts This is due to a bug in the current JBoss as 7.1.1final. We have forced the drop to avoid an issue where the JBoss client jar consumes system resources on the data collector. If you experience an extended outage in your network or on your JBoss servers, be sure to check the connections in EDM and restart them if necessary.

EDM 3.1.2 (November 2013)

Changes

Installing EDM from command line as non-root user in headless mode fails (#22372) When installing EDM on Linux as non-root user, the creation of the daemon fails because only root can create the daemon. The failure to create the daemon initiated an attempt to display a dialog box. If X Windows is not running, this will cause an exception. The EDM install will now write a warning log instead of attempting to display a dialog.

Apply template does not set Exclude Event Data flag properly (#22356) The Apply Template feature did not set the Exclude Event data flag for connections properly. This is an issue for JMS users that write event data to the database. This has been fixed.

Agent Config fails to rename an event columns multiple times in expert mode(#22017) When using Expert Mode to rename an event column multiple times, the UI would throw a validation error. This has been fixed.

EDM does not pick up Auto Run Schedule at start up (#22121) EDM would not honor the Auto Run Schedule settings after a restart of JBoss. This has been fixed.

Known Issues

Special characters are not allowed in a schema name. “.” and “-“ are known to be a problem.

EDM 3.1.1 (October 2013)

Changes

GUI Installer Fails on Windows 32 Bit Systems There was a problem with the GUI installer on windows 32 but systems using JDK 1.7. This has been resolved.

Save Quick Chart as a Report Causes Problems with Report Sorting When a user saves a quick chart as a report and then visits the reports tab and sorts by description or title, the user interface becomes unresponsive because the title and description fields have not been initialized. This has been fixed.

Create Connection With Template Fails if Template Name does not Exist When creating a connection with the web services layer, if the connection template name used does not exists, out of bounds exceptions are thrown. This has been fixed by checking for out of bounds conditions.

Plotting from deleted connection causes Quick Charts to hang In some cases, if the connection selected for plotting is deleted before the Show Chart button is clicked, the Quick Chart will hang. This has been fixed.

EDM 3.1 (October 2013)

New Features

Clairvor Automated Root Cause Analysis When a metric alert fires, a new option is available from the alert view to show the Root Cause analysis report. This report includes a plot of the alerting metric, top processes by CPU, and correlation results. Alerts can also be configured to automatically generate the root cause analysis report and send it via e-mail. The e-mailed report will include top 10 processes and correlation results. Alert Colors Alert can be assigned colors to indicate alert level Array Alerts (#21068) Users can define alerts for Array metrics. All subscripts for the array will be evaluated. User Assignment Users can assign or un-assign triggered alerts to themselves. They can also do this through the mobile UI. Pop out Reports Reports can be "popped out" into a new browser tab to keep the report open while performing other tasks in the EDM UI. Tool Bar Quick Charts and Correlation are now available from anywhere in EDM by clicking icons on the new toolbar. Save Quick Chart as Report or Chart User can now click a button to save a Quick chart as a Report or reusable chart. Reusable Custom Time Ranges Custom time ranges can be saved and later used in quick charts and reports Report Links Users can now save browser links to reports and reload them later.

Correlation Chart Type The default chart type for correlation results is now Multi Axis line.

Agent Admin Editing MultipleXML Files

EDM now supports editing of xml files other than agent.xml in the power agent /etc folder. Copy Views Views can now be copied. DCS AccessKey The AccessKey and expiration date for DCS are now visible from the Data Collectors page. The AccessKey can also be updated from the EDM UI.

EDM Access key The AccessKey and expiration date for EDM are now visible from the Systems Settings page. The key can also be updated via the EDM UI. Correlation is now a keyed feature. The correlation bit must be set in the AccessKey for Correlation to work.

Auto Discover Multiple Subnet Support

Power agents distributed across multiple subnets can be discovered by EDM/DCS

Installer

EDM install now supports interactive command line and answer file install options. The installer now works with JDK 7u21 and above when the JDK is installed under

“C:\Program Files” in windows systems. JDK7u45 is recommended for EDM. UTF8 compatibility changes in Database schema EDM Administration Console can be deployed in a JBoss cluster

VMWare VCenter Support

EDM now supports collecting performance metrics from a collection of ESX servers managed by Vcenter. The UI includes a Managed Object field that must be populated with the ESX host name when connection to VCenter. Additional Inventory Metrics Added metrics for assigned number of CPU cores per VM, as well as assigned and utilized Disk space. These metrics will only be collected if the interval is set to 30 minutes.

WebSevices

Added getAvailableMetrics, getConnectionStatus, getReportLink and customField support to the API. The signature of the updateConnnection and updateConnectionWithCustomFields signature has changed. An additional string is required for the ConnectionDataSourceName. Regenerate your stubs from the new wsdl in EDM.

Correlation results show additional independent metric (#22059) When plotting an independent metric from the correlation results table, an additional metric appears on the plot. This has been fixed.

Cannot Determine the Current Page in the Pagination Controls (22058) The pagination control did not highlight the current page. This has been fixed.

Complex views cause Save and Cancel buttons to disappear (#22060) When creating views with ten or more conditions, the OK and Cancel buttons would disappear because of the dialog could not be moved on the screen. This has been fixed.

VMware connectivity issues (#22074) ESX Connections for ESX hosts that boot from the network with or have no guests were not working properly. This has been fixed.

JMS Writing Not Working in Some Cases (#22131) Too many JMS InitialContext objects were being created, and not properly being closed. This has been fixed.

Correlation exception when data sources with different collection intervals. (#22066) Errors appear in the log when running a correlation against multiple data sources that have different data sources. This has been fixed.

Null Pointer Exception when there are no Event Metrics to write to JMS database. (#22302) If writing event data is enabled but there are no event metrics to write a Null Pointer exception was thrown. This has been fixed.

Support for JMS Archival feature has been removed Writing performance metrics to the archive RDBM tables is no longer supported.

Known Issues

Save Quick Chart as a Report Causes Problems with Report Sorting When a user saves a quick chart as a report and then visits the reports tab and sorts by description or title, the user interface becomes unresponsive because the title and description fields have not been initialized. The work around is to edit the new report, modify the title and description and save it prior to sorting. Users can log out and log back in if the screen becomes unresponsive.

VMWare Connections do not Start After Upgrade VMWare connections will not start after the initial upgrade to 3.1. The workaround is to stop and start the VMWare connections after the upgrade.

GUI Installer Fails on Windows 32 Bit Systems To install EDM on 32 bit versions of Windows 2008 or Windows 2003 with JDK 1.7, you must us the following command from the command prompt (run as Administrator)

The newer command line and answer file installers work without the flag .

The DCS and JMS installers do not require this flag.

EDM 3.0 (May 2013)

New Features

Correlation EDM now includes correlation across multiple data sources with time shifting and the ability to plot correlating metrics from the results.

Event Data Viewing Users can now view Event data from within the EDM user interface.

Explain Metric Metric descriptions are now available in the EMD user interface.

Web Service Layer EDM includes the initial release of web services for EDM. The webservices allow for remote management and of EDM, Power Agents and data extraction.

JBoss 7 Monitoring EDM 3.0 ships with agentless performance metric collection for JBoss 7.

Changes

Platform upgrade EDM3.0 requires JBoss7.1.1Final and supports Java 1.7 and Java 1.6.

Error when creating alert group (Ticket# 21644). Changed the alert wizard metric selection list to use rich:datatable instead of rich:panelMenu

Need to plot totals across systems (Ticket #21964). Add a new chart definition feature to sum across data sources. When this is checked, EDM will sum metrics of the same name from different data sources on the report.

Browser displays blank page after login (Ticket #21950) Under certain conditions, newly create users would see a blank screen after logging in.The problem was a duplicate entry in the userProfile table.

Allow EDM to work with a SQL Server Encrypted Database (Ticket 21993) This change fixes new installs and upgrades for EDM 3.0. The change works if the database is not encrypted as well.

Alert e-mail sent when no recipients configured (Ticket #21999) When a "}" is inside an alert message the data collector can correctly parse the .vth file

Alerts fire incorrectly if downloading historical data (Ticket #21465).

Exceptions being ignored while parsing TLC records (Ticket # 21460) Any exceptions sent via an ExceptionMessage must be wrapped in a NetworkException

Corrupt EventList file created by DCS (Ticket #21600) The CRC check of the data portion of the TLC record would only occur if the connection had encryption turned on. This was allowing corrupt event records to be written to the EventList file.

Dropped connection failed to restart (Ticket 21850) Updated the code so that if an existing timer is found we remove it replace it with a new one instead of logging it and doing nothing.

DCS fails to reconnect all connection (Ticket #21978) Added additional logging.

anchor db timestamp 0 at 1970-01 (Ticket #21713) Corrected the timestamp of event data to be written in 1970 EPOCH time.

Need to view settings for an active connection ( #21505) View Mode has been added. If you click on the edit icon for archives or histories of an active connection, the details page opens in view mode.

EDM does not work with Java 1.7 (#21521) EDM now supports Java 1.7.

EDM requires JBoss bound to localhost (#21608) The install now by default puts the hostname after the -b option, instead of 0.0.0.0, so this should also resolve to an IP of the system.

DataSources are not discovered(#21706) Discover data sources will now honor the TCP/IP port ranges defined in the settings area.

EDM thread looping, taking 100% of a cpu (#21904) The code that caused this issue is no longer used.

Expressions fail to plot if they contain multiple metrics(#21958) Corrected issue for quickcharts where referencing multiple subscripts of the same metric didn't work, and caused a failure to collect data.

Need reports to refresh periodically (#21961) Reports now have an option to refresh periodically.

JMS exception with MySQL local cache DB connection (#21966) The cache database is no longer used in EDM 3.0.

DB deadlock due to application processing (#21979) Database calls have been tuned to prevent deadlocks .

VM-Conn only delivers metrics from last host in vCenter (#21891) EDM has been updated to work with both ESX direct connections and Vcenter. A new field has

been added to VMware connections to pass in the ESX name when connecting to Vcenter.

Known Issues

Multi-axis line chart does not work when rendering in HTML5. This does work when Adobe flash is installed. There is a slow browser memory leak when continuously refreshing reports for extended periods. This applies only when using Internet Explorer.

Changes to Runtime.exec in Java 7 Update 21 Causes Install to Fail on Windows The new release of Java 7 Update 21 can cause the install to fail when java is installed in a path that contains a space. Please read the Java release notes from Oracle for details.

1. Use ~ in the JAVA_HOME path eg.) C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jdk1.7.0_21
