EARTH DAY

TABLING EVENTS Bill LaVoie, Al Sattler, Kathleen Martin and Hersh Kelley joined together in a grass-roots community outreach effort by hanging out a banner for the Earth Day celebration at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. An estimated 1,200 visitors turned out for the Earth Day festivities and more than 50 organizations and agencies exhibited. We welcomed several new members to our group at this event and hope to see them at the upcoming Newcomer/Membership Information meeting on July 23rd! Our group welcomes new members and volunteers to join the Outreach Team…no experience necessary! Contact Bill LaVoie for upcoming tabling events!

VIRTUAL MAKEOVER – WEBSITE EDITION Have you checked out the PV-SB website lately? Webmaster Alan Takushi decided to give our website a new look and

feel…the renovation is superb! Through thoughtful reorganization and consolidation, things are much easier to access! Outings Chair Terry Bass played an essential role in this undertaking by adding special links to all activities that will

provide a map of the starting point for all local hikes, a place to get driving directions, and links for additional information

about the destinations of our bus trips. Try it out at www.angeles.sierraclub.org/pvsb and let us know what you think.

Thank you Alan and Terry!

MALIBU VOTES TO BAN PLASTIC BAGS

City council takes Southland’s most decisive step to protect environment

Malibu, CA (Tuesday, May 13, 2008) -- The Malibu City Council voted unanimously Monday night to ban retailers from distributing single-use plastic shopping bags within city limits, joining dozens of other progressive cities that have recently moved to curb the proliferation of wasteful packaging. Malibu’s ban is the most aggressive action to date on plastic bags by any Southland city, as it applies to all retailers, from grocery stores to small boutiques. It forbids the distribution of both plastic and compostable carryout bags. Grocery stores, food vendors, restaurants, pharmacies and city facilities have six months to comply with the ordinance. Smaller sized retailers have one year until the measure is operative. The City Council also directed staff to research imposing fees on paper bags, in a bid to drive consumer adoption of more sustainable reusable bags. Regional environmental group Heal the Bay provided input to city staff that drafted the approved measure as part of its yearlong fight to promote the use of reusable shopping bags statewide. One-use plastic bags clog landfills, foul our public spaces, waste energy and threaten marine life. California taxpayers spend more than $25 million a year to collect and dispose of the 19 billion one-use plastic shopping bags distributed annually. “The city of Malibu should be commended for taking decisive action to protect the environment and improve residents’ quality of life,” said Sarah Abramson, Heal the Bay’s director of coastal resources. “Hopefully other cities are taking notice and now realize that the writing is on the wall for plastic bags.”

More than two dozen nations and metropolitan areas have recently enacted limited bans on plastic bags, including China, San Francisco and Paris. Santa Monica officials are now drafting an ordinance that would forbid the distribution of all single-use plastic shopping bags within city limits and require that store owners charge shoppers a fee if they request a paper bag.

The Malibu measure was broadly supported by the local community, including the Malibu Surfing Association, Malibu Green Teens, Surfrider Foundation and other citizen groups.

Portuguese Bend Pending

Purchase Agreement to Acquire 192 Acres for $9.2 Million

May, 2008

According to Nick Green of the Daily Breeze, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy have an agreement to buy 192 Acres of land known as Upper Filiorium. This pending acquisition would connect the east and west parcels to the Upper Filiorium providing for a 1,400 acre corridor of contiguous land overlooking the ocean. This threatened habitat is home to several rare animal and plant species. It seems that not having enough cash to make the purchase remains “largely a technicality” for the city and the conservancy. Evidently, “$2 million in federal dollars were set aside four years ago just for this eventuality. Other sources of anticipated financial support include $4.7 million from the California Coastal Conservancy, $613,000 from the city and $1.8 million from the conservancy.”
