Houston’s first free-standing heart hospital, the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Southwest, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month and
continues to offer its patients the most innovative technology along with the highest quality of care. The Institute was recently named one of the 50 Top Cardiac Hospitals in the United States.*
New Procedure for High-Risk Patients with Aortic Stenosis
When blood rushes through the heart and surrounding blood vessels, it makes noise. But although all hearts make sounds, not all heart sounds are normal. Unusual heart sounds are called heart murmurs. Specialists affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Southwest can identify the source and cause of a patient’s heart murmur based on its location, quality and timing.
“Our team of dedicated professionals determines if these murmurs are benign or life-threatening. Each patient has the benefit of a complete case review and receives our evaluation as to a proper course of treatment,” says Luis Echeverri, M.D., a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon affiliated with the Institute.
Symptoms of dangerous heart murmurs may include shortness of breath, chest pain, weakness and palpitations. You should seek further evaluation if you experience these kinds of symptoms and have a history of heart murmur or aortic stenosis, or a family history of heart murmurs and heart disease.
A multidisciplinary team affiliated with the Institute was recently chosen as one of the few teams in the country, and the only hospital in Houston outside of the Texas Medical Center, approved to perform an innovative procedure for patients who suffer from critical aortic stenosis but are not eligible for traditional, open-heart surgery.
“The approval of this device for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not candidates for open heart surgery is a tremendous advancement in the field of medicine,” says Earl Mangin, M.D., a board-certified cardiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. “I believe that this procedure will allow these patients a low-risk alternative therapy that should improve their quality of life tremendously. We are all genuinely excited to be one of only a handful of sites selected to offer this landmark procedure for patients at Memorial Hermann Southwest.”
To find out more or to determine if you are eligible for this cutting-edge procedure, please call us at 1.855.5.MURMUR.

In celebration of Children’s Book Week, January 22-28, Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will continueits annual tradition of welcoming newborns to thewonders of books. Every Fort Bend County baby
born during this week may receive a special baby bookbag, courtesy of the Friends of Fort Bend CountyLibrary. Each bag contains a book, a bib, a specialcertificate, a list of suggested reading for children, andinformation on parenting and on library services. Thesebags represent the library system’s commitment toproviding library services for county residents throughouttheir lives, beginning at birth.
“We hope to start every child born in hospitals in FortBend County on a successful road to life-long learning,”says Susan King, Coordinator of Youth Services forFBCL. “We distribute the baby book bags to babies bornduring that week at OakBend Medical Center inRichmond, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital,Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, St. Luke’s Sugar LandHospital, and the Fort Bend Family Health Center, but allFort Bend County babies who are born during Children’sBook Week are eligible to receive one, while supplies last.”

If you have met Jeremy Smith you rememberhis engaging smile, approachable style, andwillingness to help. He’s also a great exampleof physical fitness. When you see Jeremy, you
think, hum….personal trainer. And you’d beright. Jeremy, a National Council of Strength andFitness Certified Personal Trainer since 2005 hasbeen active all his life and regularly coaches oth-ers as a Personal Trainer at the Fort Bend FamilyYMCA in Missouri City.
On November 5th
2011, competing for thefirst time in the MuscleMania Space City BodyBuilding Show, NoviceDivision, Jeremy placed2nd in the Heavy WeightDivision of the competi-tion. “I wanted to chal-lenge myself to take it toa higher level. This is be-yond what a regular exer-ciser would do, but as I challenged myself andbelieved in myself, I was able to accomplish some-thing extraordinary,” Jeremy says.
By losing 45 pounds over a dedicated 16-week pe-riod, Jeremy sculpted his body, doing it all naturally, nosteroids, through an intense seven-day training regimenand very strict diet. To see significant physical im-provement, it is generally recommended that oneworkout five times per week, and at least three timesper week to maintain fitness.
“It takes dedication over a period of time to loseweight and increase muscle in a healthy and safe way.You don’t have to give up everything all at once”, Je-remy says. “Mix it up with nutrition, weight resistancetraining and especially aerobic cardio. Change a fewthings at first. Take out the junk food. Eat more veg-etables and lean meats. Be consistent. Change yourlifestyle and you can be successful in reaching yourgoals. You just have to make up your mind to do it.”
Take the next step by investing in personal trainingat the Fort Bend Family YMCA. Jeremy and othergreat certified personal trainers are available to help youreach your fitness and nutrition goals. There is a pack-age to fit every budget. ■

their business in the next fiveyears. More than half of thebusiness leaders who plan toretire believe their companieswill stay in the family. A 2010study by Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, however, estimatedthat only about 36% ofAmerican family firms areactually passed on to a sec-ond generation. The transi-tion from one generation tothe next is considered one ofthe biggest risks to the sur-vival of a family-owned busi-ness. The Pricewaterhouse-Coopers study also revealedthat 47% of family firmshave no formal successionplan.

“I’ve been in the financial planning indus-try for 21 years,” says James Marshall, owner of MarshallWealthManagement.“I’ve seen various trends come and go,
but one fundamental remains steadfast: to maximizefinancial success, you need a plan.” And the sooneryou implement that plan, the better. Over a 20 yearhorizon, investing $100 permonth with a compoundannual interest rate of 3% will produce a better re-turn than a $1,000 investment with an 8% returnover a 24-month window (approximately $32,000versus $26,000).
When it comes to wealth building, time is yourfriend. For other useful advice and timely wealthbuilding tips visit www.marshallyourmoney.com,schedule a complimentary consultation, and order acopy of James Marshall’s book, Wealth: Unlock the se-crets to creating and protecting black family prosperity! “Toooften people are reluctant to seek advice from a pro-fessional and they end up pursuing a less than opti-mal path,” says Marshall.
When choosing someone to help you manageyour wealth, select carefully. Know your adviser’sbackground and understand how he or she gets paid.Don’t be afraid to ask for references. Discuss youradviser’s track record and decision-making processwhen it comes to investments. Ensure you and youradviser’s goals are aligned by putting your expecta-tions in writing. Be confident that there are checksand balances in the way business is conducted. It’snot just yourmoney; it’s wealth that belongs to futuregenerations, as well.
Marshall WealthManagement advocates The HiveFamily Wealth Building System as a mechanism for cre-ating intergenerational wealth. In this system, fami-lies pool resources to create self-sufficient networksand trusts. “I know sometimes every one in the fam-ily doesn’t get along,” Marshall says, “but it’s time tomove beyond all that.” Families can and should cre-

You don’t needthe financial resources of theKennedy clan to create a familymecca reminiscent of theKennedy’s Kennebunkportcompound in Maine. You simplyneed a plan.
There are six basic compo-nents to wealth building: cashreserves, protection planning, investment planning, retire-ment planning, tax planningand estate planning. But thereis no single magic formula onhow these components shouldbe mixed together for optimumreturn on investment. In retire-ment, the general rule ofthumb is that you need 70% ofyour current income to livewell. That may or may not betrue for you. When you startedyour first job, perhaps youshould have maxed out your401(k) contribution and takenadvantage of the employermatching program but you did-n’t. Now what? It looks likeyour parents will need assistedliving care at the same timeyour second child is enteringcollege. Where do you pull themoney to support your parentsand your children without sab-otaging your own retirementplans? Whatever your financial
situation and goals might be, a good financialplanner can help guide you to make the bestdecisions.
So, bring in the New Year with a renewedcommitment to wealth building for yourselfand the generations to come. For help getting

The beginning of anew year is whenwe traditionally
take stock of our livesand vow to makeimprovements.Makingsmall, lasting lifestylechanges for betterhealth is a great ideaany time of the year!
Annual wellwoman visits, mam-mograms and regularpre-natal check-ups arevitally important for catching problems at earlystages. AtWomen’s SpecialtyHealthcare, we believea preventative approach not only inhibits diseaseand lowers health care costs, but improves qualityof life. We look forward to lasting relationshipswith each patient as partners inmaintaining your op-timal wellness.
Most of us have a general idea of things wecould do to improve our health, but sometimes weneglect to make it a priority. We all benefit from atleast 8 hours of quality sleep each night, a balanceddiet with lots of veggies and lean proteins, andregular exercise.
Because of the fast pace of modern life andintensive farming methods that have negativelyimpacted the food supply, even people who workto eat right and exercise are often lacking theessential vitamins and minerals that help keep ushealthy. To find out exactly what each patient’sdeficiencies are we recommend MicronutrientTesting – a state of the art evaluation that detectslow levels of specific micronutrients at the tissuelevel.Micronutrients are the nutrients that wemustingest every day because our bodies cannotsynthesize them. New research shows a linkbetween certain vitamin deficiencies and thedevelopment of serious health issues. You mayalready take vitamins, but taking supplements youdon’t need, or low grade varieties, or the wrongdosage can do more harm than good.
