The company employs fty people, and is
planning to expand to meet the growing
international demand for its products. TMC
Cancela products are sold in most of
Europe, the United States, Canada, Latin
America and Africa. It is expected that, in
2013, exports will account for nearly 50
percent of the companys total revenue.
Key factors in the companys success
include its vibrant and creative staff,
extensive industry experience, a willing-
ness to continuously adapt to consumer
demands and a strong focus on research
and development (R&D), which the com-
pany dedicates 12 percent of revenue
annually.

We design and develop our products with-
out outsourcing anything, says Sears.
Our technical and R&D departments are
the brain and soul of the company. The
communication between different depart-
ments, suppliers and customers is, with
the support of good software, a key factor
to be productive and avoid downtime.
Since 2010, that good software has
included NX software and Teamcentersoftware from product lifecycle manage-
ment (PLM) specialist Siemens PLM
Software. We have a lot of talent and cre-
ativity at our disposal in the technical and
R&D department, but that talent would be
useless without trustworthy tools like NX
and Teamcenter, says Sears.
Gaining an edge with 3D design
In 2010, TMC Cancela decided to imple-
ment 3D computer-aided design (CAD)

software. Until that time, we worked with
a 2D system, says Sears. To manufac-
ture a prototype, we needed months to
play with templates, and a lot of materials
and working hours were wasted.
After spending several months analyzing
3D CAD tools and collecting user experi-
ences from several companies, TMC
Cancela selected NX. We thought NX was
a good value and we liked the fact that NX
was highly congurable and modular soft-ware, able to grow and improve along
with the company, says Sears. Another
reason that we selected NX was because it
was produced by Siemens PLM Software, a
renowned multinational company. This
gives you a great sense of security,
because you know the company wont dis-
appear, youll have strong technical sup-
port and you know big companies around
the world are committed to Siemens PLM

In just one week, TMC Cancela imple-
mented NX with the support and training
of Avantek, a partner of Siemens PLMSoftware.
Despite having never worked with 3D
software, the staff quickly adapted due to
the usability of the tool, and as a result,
the improvements quickly became obvi-
ous, says Sears. By changing from 2D
to 3D, we noticed a drastic improvement
in the speed of response, prototyping and
management of the technical documenta-
tion. To say that we improved production
by 100 percent with NX would be an
understatement.
Thanks to 3D design, our prototypes have
become far more polished; much more like
the nished machines that we have in
mind, says Nicols Pichel, head of engi-
neering at TMC Cancela. With NX, we
have the agility to design and make modi-
cations that allow us to market more new
products and be highly exible in our rela-
tions with our customers; if they ask us for
a particular model or customization, we
can respond very quickly.
Using Teamcenter to improve productivityWith the successful implementation of NX,
TMC Cancela decided to take another
step forward to improve its processes by
adopting a complete PLM solution. The
Teamcenter implementation took about
three months and included a review of
previous procedures.
We decided on Teamcenter because it
seamlessly communicates directly and in
real time with NX, and because we had
very good references on it from othercompanies, says Sears. We also decided
that Teamcenter would be the starting
point for the whole companys way of
working. We started using it for coding
items for all processes and departments.
This proved to be a major improvement
because today, we enjoy higher levels of
order, quality, exibility and agility, with-
out duplications or redundancies through
the organization.
Sears says the decision to adjust the
companys processes to the specic cus-tomization tools within Teamcenter was
critical to the projects success: If a com-
pany is tempted to tailor Teamcenter too
much to its traditional ways of working, it
risks repeating the same mistakes it had
been making. Instead, it is worth making
an effort to adapt to the predened fea-
tures of the new tool. In our case, this
resulted in a great improvement in
productivity.

Using NX to increase operational
efciencyTMC Cancela uses ve NX modules
modeling, sheet metal, assembly, drawing
and simulation for designing, dimension-
ing, manufacturing assemblies and manag-
ing technical documentation, such as
assembly, parts and manufacturing draw-
ings handbooks. Sears points out that in
relation to other design software, NX is
very suited to manage mechanical parts
catalogs, especially because of its perfect
integration and synchronization with
Teamcenter.
Sears particularly appreciates the stabil-
ity and exibility of NX: The management
of multi-level assemblies is very easy,
because you just need to cut and paste.
Users can design their pieces at their own
pace without worrying about technical
procedures or a preconceived structure. I t
is also very easy to use. The environment
is very clean, intuitive and easily customiz-
able. Ultimately, the stability, exibility
and user-friendly features of NX resulted
in signicant operational efciency.
Managing with agility
The Teamcenter solution is used at TMC
Cancela for document management in the
design and production launch areas.
PLM has played a very important role for
us, says Pichel. We have a large range of
models, with many variations within each.
Bringing a document management system
for each model with an independent prod-
uct lifecycle gives us great agility when
managing items such as spare parts and
all after-sales activities.
Pichel notes that Teamcenter enables users
to quickly access information of any part
or item in relation to the design, the pro-
duction launch and the changes or valida-
tions. Therefore, information can be easily
traced, which is crucial to effective quality
control. He notes, It is very easy to search
for any part thanks to the large number of
customizable lters.
When going from an existing design to a
new design, Teamcenter gives us a lot of
exibility to make changes, and review
and save assemblies and parts, with no
linking problems, adds Picehl. With
Teamcenter, it is easy to handle bothlarge and small assemblies. He notes,
Teamcenter is also an exceptionally
usable tool, because it delivers a very
simple environment to work in.
Getting a new product to
market before your competi-
tors is essential, because they
have probably detected the
same needs in the market as
you have. Therefore, it is
necessary to speed up the
product development process
as much as possible, and that

Getting to market faster
Three years after implementing Siemens
PLM Software technology, TMC Cancela is
clearly enjoying the results. For that rea-
son, the company plans to update NX
and Teamcenter and acquire new
licenses. Other projects in the works
include connecting Teamcenter to its
enterprise resource planning (ERP) sys-
tem and expanding the use of this solu-
tion to the purchasing, production and
after-sales departments.
