Welcome
We are delighted to welcome you to this inaugural event of the new Society of
International Economic Law. This conference represents the culmination of a
year and a half of intense efforts to launch a new organization for our field -
one that is global in scope, with members from Quebec to Santiago, from
Glasgow to Beijing, from Cape Town to Canberra. We are delighted with the
quality and diversity of speakers and participants at this event, as well as the
variety of topics covered across many different substantive areas in the field.
Such diversity is central to the mission of SIEL, and reflects our ongoing and
unfinished efforts to make the organisation as inclusive as possible.
We are so grateful to – and admiring of – the team who has worked so
tirelessly (and in such good humour!) to put this conference together. Among
the many others that helped, we particularly thank Theresa Carpenter (CTEI),
as well as the members of the SIEL Founding and Executive Committees who
have invested an extraordinary amount of time to make the event a success for
us all. And we are grateful to the Centre on Trade and Economic Integration at
the HEID, and particularly its Director Joost Pauwelyn, for their generosity in
hosting the conference, and providing such invaluable support for it.
This conference, however, is just the beginning of the activities of SIEL. This
organization will become more than merely a periodic conference. It is our
goal that, with our members’ active participation, SIEL will serve as a major
force in the development and growth of the field. Such growth would include,
for example, actively working in those parts of the world where the field is not
being taught or practiced at the level required by today’s realities. It might also
include SIEL working to ease connections and networks across the field,
whether such work is with individuals or with already existing and highly
effective organizations. SIEL will also explore how it can fill voids presently
existing in the field - whether in academia or practice. We invite you all
through your work and support to help us make this new organization a
positive force in the field.
Andrew and Colin, Co-Chairs, Founding Committee, SIEL
Galina, Co-Chair, SIEL Inaugural Conference Committee

Welcome message from the CTEI
Welcome to Geneva, the heart of global trade policy! We are extremely proud
to be the host of the SIEL inaugural conference. Like SIEL, the Centre for
Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI) was only created recently. Yet, we
have high ambitions: To become a central hub for research, training,
conferences and other activities in the field of trade and economic integration
and to do so in a multi-disciplinary and problem-solving fashion. We hope that
you enjoy this conference and that we will find ways to continue to work
together in the future.
Prof. Joost Pauwelyn, Director
Dr. Theresa Carpenter, Executive Director
Centre for Trade and Economic Integration, Graduate Institute of
