Prayer Shawl News
So far, this year, Pella’s Prayer Shawl ministry has given nearly 20 hand knitted or crocheted
shawls. Most are given to Pella members here, but some are given to friends or folks who are in
other places. If you would like to take part and need sizes, ideas or encouragement, just call the
church office at 433-3350 or me at 488-3465. There is always a “stash” of yarn on a shelf in the
Gathering Commons area.
Thank you one and all who so cheerfully share time, resources and prayers making these shawls.
I have experienced first hand the sincere appreciation felt by those who receive a prayer shawl.
Join us if you can! You will so enjoy sharing this mission with us. In Christ, Betty Cumming
Calling Volunteers for Quilting The quilting group here at Pella meets each Tuesday from 8:00 –11:30 a.m. Last year we made
198 quilts for the Lutheran World Relief organization and others were donated to local
fundraisers/benefits and some were given to our Pella high school seniors. We can always use
more help, please come and join us for fun and fellowship! If you have any questions, please call
Linda Tibbits at 433-2215.
Worship in the Park and Blessing of Animals
August 25 Thank you to everyone who made our end of summer
worship in the park with an animal blessing a faithful
witness to God’s glory in creation. The membership and
outreach team puts in many hours planning this worship
service and ensuring everything is in place for the people
to experience God’s glory. Special thanks to Kyra Hagberg,
Dawn Biebl, George Biebl, and Becky Reidle for planning
and logistics. Thank you Nancy Trudell for bringing extra
tables and chairs. Thank you to Power 95 for
having a tech available to transmit the worship
service from the park. Thank you to Vi Tharp for
ensuring we have a key to use the band shell, flag
room and food service area. Special thanks to
Karen and Kevin Boehler for always blessing us
with great music and the use of the sound system.
It takes a team!
We were especially blessed to have ten special
fury companions worship with us and be blessed.

FROM THE DOG HOUSE
Hello, Rella here this month …
Wow …. what a summer! I was happily lazing in the sun and hunting birds and
mice in the yard here in Sidney when all of the sudden I was in a pet carrier in the
truck! Eric had packed me up with the dogs and we headed to the mountain house!
I was pretty sad after my friend Clementine died and I just wanted to be left alone. I think Eric
thought that once I got to the mountain house I would be happier hunting all the mice and chip-
munks in the woods around the house.
Well, eventually the very long drive ended and we all got out of the truck. It was good to be back at
the mountain house. There’s always lots of activity there. I might just watch, but I’m never bored.
I’m 11 now and getting older, but don’t really look like it. I think Eric noticed I was slowing down a
little because I didn’t catch very many mice. I like to sleep a lot in the warm sun now.
I did watch Eric do one thing. I watched him bury Clementine. He was very careful and then he
drove way up to a mountain lake and got a big rock to mark where she was buried, just like all my
other friends that have died. He even bought little brass tags and put their names on the rocks. It
made me feel good to think I might be cared for like that someday.
Then a BAD thing happened. It was time to leave and come back to Sidney and I was sleeping in a
nice dark hiding place and Eric and Pastor Audrey couldn’t find me for hours. Finally, they just had
to leave and I was stuck in the house all alone. That made me feel very sad. It’s terrible to be in that
big house all alone without my people or my other dog friends. I was there for 10 days all alone. It’s
terrible to be all alone like that.
Finally, someone came and got me and we went on a car ride to Big Timber, and when we got there,
there was Pastor Audrey waiting. She put me in her car and we drove back to Sidney. When we got
there, there were all my friends and Eric waiting and they were all VERY happy to see me. I hated
being alone. It made me think that people probably hate being alone all the time too. It’s so nice
when regular family or even church family comes to visit. It’s nice to feel wanted and not alone. So
remember all those people who are alone and go see them. I know what it’s like to be alone for a
long time … it’s terrible.
Rella …

ELCA Church wide Assembly Submitted by: Ron Gebhardt
The ELCA Church wide Assembly was held August 5-10 in Milwaukee, WI at the Milwaukee Center.
As a member of the Montana Synod voting delegation, I was able to participate in all the activities at
this assembly – Plenary sessions where we took action on several proposals, worship with around
1000 other representatives and guests, meals, and Hearings on proposals and memorials.
Bishop Elizabeth Eaton was re-elected presiding bishop on the first ballot. Sue Rothmeyer was
elected as Secretary after several ballots. Sue has been the assistant to the Secretary for several years
and will provide continuity within the office.
During the plenary sessions, we were able to participate in debate and discussions of the proposals
presented to us by the church wide council. ALL of the proposals came with a recommendation from
the church wide council to approve as presented. There were SEVERAL items which were removed
from proposals for separate consideration and debate/discussion on the floor. Most of these related to
the constitutional amendments and memorials submitted by the various synods. The social statement
which serves as guidance for the church did not generate a lot of debate in either the hearings or on
the floor. There were NO close votes on any issue brought before the assembly.
Something to remember is that ALL of the action taken ONLY affects the national church. Each
synod and congregation retains its autonomy from each other – this was a key take-away from the
constitutional amendments – that EACH congregation, EACH synod and the national church are
SEPARATE bodies and are NOT bound by the actions of each other.
Visit the ELCA.org website to view the activities and read all of the materials utilized at the assembly
if desired. The following is a summary from: www.elca.org/News-and-Events/8003 of the actions
taken during the assembly.

Pella Pantry Youth Volunteer Winners This year 32 children and youth volunteered their time to Pella Pantry. Some of these students
worked one or more shifts; some of them helped with preparation and cleanup tasks; and some of
them did a combination. Thank you to everyone who helped! Janelle held a drawing for all the youth
volunteers, based on their age groups, and here are the gift card winners: WBS age – Eva Peterson
Confirmation age – Matthew Savage
LYO age – Alexis Iversen

Youth Help Volunteers Beautifying Sidney (VBS) with Projects
by Janelle Leader Lamb
On Aug. 5, a group of Pella youth teamed up with a group from St. John’s Lutheran – Mapleton,
MN, to work on a couple projects in Sidney. The group from Mapleton (5 youth and 3 adults) made a
stop in Sidney on their way to Glacier Park. They wanted to meet some other Lutheran youth and do
a service project during their trip, so they researched churches along their route and found Pella.
Teaming up with VBS (Volunteers Beautifying Sidney) led everyone to the completion of two
service projects.
Project 1 was painting the concession/bathroom building at Water Tower Park. Project 2 was picking
up rocks/debris along the walking path. Between the projects we enjoyed a meal and fellowship at
the church. Then after the work was done, we had some fun at the Fairview Lift Bridge/Cartwright
Tunnel, had more food/fellowship time and enjoyed a beautiful sunset drive. It was a great day with old friends and new friends; service and fun; food and fellowship. We’re
thankful that the folks from Mapleton found us!
If you’d like to see more, there is a photo collage in the main hallway at the church.

Confirmation
Confirmation is Pella’s educational program for students in 6th through 8th grades. Confirmation is
designed to assist each confirmand in his/her faith journey with God/Jesus/Holy Spirit and in
becoming an active adult member of Pella Lutheran Church. This is accomplished through studying
(Bible, Catechism), worshiping and serving in the church and community.
LYO (Lutheran Youth Organization)
LYO is Pella’s high school group (9th thru 12th graders). LYO meets to grow in faith, serve others,
walk together through life’s ups/downs, socialize and have fun in a safe and casual environment.
We always encourage the youth to come as they are, come when they can, and bring a friend.
Care Packages
Each Fall Pella sends care packages to those who have moved away to pursue education/career
training, but we need your help.
If you have someone in your family who would appreciate a care package, please contact the office
with his/her name and address.
Also, if you have something to donate for the care packages, please deliver it to the church. Items to
consider: toiletries, snacks, school/office supplies. We are estimating that we’ll send about 20
packages, and will plan to mail them in the mid to end of October.
Thank you for helping us stay in touch with those in our faith family who are away from home!
Rite of Confirmation
During worship on July 29, Payten Syth, Mikael Savage and
Colten Dahl affirmed their faith. Congratulations!
School Year Blessings
During worship on Aug. 18, Pastor
blessed all students and teachers
who are starting a new academic
year. Blessings to everyone for a
safe and successful year!
FALL KICK OFF! by Janelle Leader Lamb
Student and Volunteer Recognition at September 8 Worship
Preschoolers, 3rd
Graders and 6th
Graders Receive Prayer Books and Bibles ALL students and volunteers participating in Pella’s education programs are invited for a special
recognition during worship on September 8. This is the Sunday prior to our Wednesday program
start, so we would like to kick off the year by worshiping together and recognizing all that
participate. In addition, this will be the day when 3rd graders are presented Bibles – a longtime
tradition at Pella. Last year we launched the tradition of giving 6th graders a new Bible for their
confirmation journey, which also will occur on this day. And new this year, we will be
acknowledging preschool students who are joining the program for the first time. They will receive
a prayer book. If you have any questions, please contact Janelle.
Wednesday Night Programs Begin September 11
Pella’s midweek programs start a new year on Wednesday, September 11. The schedule will be the
same as last year:
5:15-6:15 pm – WBS (Wednesday Bible School)
6:00-7:00 pm – Community Meal
6:45-8:00 pm – Confirmation and LYO (Lutheran Youth Organization)
STUDENTS: If you have returning students, you only need to contact the office if your information
needs to be updated since last year. If you have new students, please register using a form from the
church or from the Pella website.
WBS (Wednesday Bible School)
WBS is Pella’s educational program for kids in preschool through 5th grade. The goal of WBS is to
give children a foundation of learning from the Bible and to help them develop a relationship with
God/Jesus/Holy Spirit. Our hope is that WBS is not a solitary event in a child’s week but a source
from which they can develop what they’ve learned at home, at worship and elsewhere.
TEACHERS: We are in serious need of teachers for WBS, so please talk to Janelle. We love having
parents volunteer, but you don’t have to be a parent. Please consider what you might have to offer
our younger sisters and brothers in Christ.
Community Meal
Community Meal … The name itself invites not only our congregation but anyone in
the community. EVERYONE is welcome. This is not just a meal to sustain our
bodies, it is a time of fellowship. So invite someone to join you. If you see someone
new, invite them to sit with you or ask to sit with them.
The meal is free! That being said, a free-will donation is collected each week to offset
expenses. Thank you for considering how you can support this ministry!

Alpha Marriage Course When a couple is married in the church the church promises to pray for
and help guide the couple through the marriage. For this reason Pella is
offering the Alpha Marriage Course Sundays, beginning September 8,
through October 20, 2019 from 4 to 6 p.m. A meal will be provided.
Daycare is available with advanced notice.
This seven week course is for ANY married or cohabitating couple
whether they have been together for one or sixty-one years or are
THINKING about being married. The course is beneficial whether the
couple has a good relationship or are struggling. The good news is that
there is NO SHARING of intimate details of the relationship with anyone but your partner. Each
couple will have their own space, and after learning about a common issue in a marriage, will be
given the opportunity to discuss the issue which has been raised. Each participant will have his/her
own manual to work through and make notes.
Please let pastor Audrey know if you plan to attend. We would like to ensure we have enough guest
manuals. Sessions can be made up on your own if one is missed.
Faith Circle Meetings Faith Circle, is open to all women. They will be meeting the 2nd Thursday of each month
from 12-1pm in a classroom, starting September 12. We will continue our book study from last year,
“Unshakable Hope” by Max Lucado. Please simply join us at noon, or contact the church office
with questions.

2019 Pella Pantry Report by Yvonne Gebhardt
Thank you, Pella volunteers, for all your efforts to make this year’s fair booth a total success! Our
booth was cleaned and readied for the fair in about an hour, and post-fair cleanup was similar. All
that unseen work helped make the fair shifts much more productive and fun during the week!
I hope that during the fair you had time to make new friends or reacquaint yourselves with old
friends. I know that conversations flowed both in the Pella kitchen during pie baking and at the
Pella Pantry during shifts. Your smiles and friendliness shone through in all areas!
Final numbers won’t be available for a couple of months as we want to make sure all bills are paid
before we set donation amounts, but I can tell you that our income was in line with previous years.
Thanks especially to Linda Anderson for heading the pie baking; Cindy Irigoin, Diane Savage, and
Linda Becker for making the delicious BBQ beef; Kelly Johnson for the Pella beans made daily and
thank you to Gail and Rhonda Peterson for supplying the ground beef for the beans. Thank you to
Larry and Tami Christensen for donating the potato chips that were used with the meals. Thank you
to the Boy Scouts for bagging and delivering our ice, also thank you to the Sidney Country Club for
their extra donation of large bags of ice delivered by Jason Lamb and Zac Leader. Randy Iversen
thank you for prepping the Pantry – lighting the water heater and ensuring a solid water supply; also
for the shutdown procedures required to winterize the booth. A special thanks to Margene Rambur
and Pam Dahl for delivering pies each day and to Stan Rosaaen for his assistance setting up the
booth with Kelly Johnson and myself each day.
Whether you worked a shift (or many), helped with pies, or enjoyed our food during the fair, your
participation helped make Pella Pantry a success. Thanks to all of you for your continued support
and God Bless!
Pella Pie Report by Linda Anderson
Another Great Fair and a wonderful Pella Pie crew! Without dedicated volunteers none of this
would be possible. Our dough makers met three days before baking. Dough rollers met on Monday
and pie baking started on Tuesday before the fair. Dough makers, rollers, fillers & fluters were:
Russ Markwald, Eileen Rein, Linda Tibbits, Judy Sondeno, Lois Dump, Nancy Dynneson,
Kathy Durham, Charolette Iversen, Kathy Iversen, Trish Neiss, Ruth Reidle, Violet Tharp,
Alida Dore, Carol Nankivel, Renee Troudt, Linda O’Connor, Mercedes Lamb, Tristan Lamb,
Nancy Reitan, Pastor Audrey and Alex Reeve. I truly apologize if I have missed anyone.
A special thank you to Trish Neiss for hanging out with me each day to bake and clean up and to
Pastor Audrey for baking for me on Friday. For cutting up rhubarb, thank you Pastor Audrey and
Becky Reidle.
Thank you to Sidney Sugars for donating the sugar for our pies. And thanks to ALL those who
donated rhubarb.
I can’t stress enough that this pie project is a total TEAM EFFORT. Please take a moment to thank
these wonderful people for their time. I am just a small piece of a very large puzzle. Pella is blessed
to have such wonderful volunteers and I am blessed to be able to work with them. Thank you all!

September 2019 With Christ; We Welcome, Nurture, Equip and Serve.
Pella Lutheran Church
Ambassador
Since 2013, thousands of ELCA congregations have participated in God’s
Work. Our Hands. Sunday. This is a dedicated day of service for the
church. The idea is that the church across the United States gathers to
serve their communities in ways that share the love of God with all of
God’s people. The event has quickly become an anticipated way to be “church together” and
“church for the sake of the world.” The set day for 2019 is September 8, however, congregations
can join in this effort and use any Sunday. In 2019, Pella will be church for the sake of the world on
September 15.
On September 15 Pella will gather for a brief worship at 9 a.m. Following worship the people will
be sent out to complete various projects. The projects vary in needs of skill and physical ability.
I know, from previous experience, signing up for a project as a family is rewarding. The intent is to
ensure there are projects for all ages. Each project will take no longer than two hours. We will plan
to have sack lunches delivered to each project site by 11 a.m. so workers and those being served
can share a meal together.
Examples of projects that are in the works are: 1) Making sack lunches. These lunches will be
delivered to all participants and First Responders as a way to say thank you. 2) Deliver the sack
lunches to the various project sites and to First Responders working on Sunday. 3) Younger
children can decorate the sacks. 4) Doing crafts with clients at the ROI group homes. 5) Doing yard
work for individuals who are unable to get out in their yards. 6) Cleaning gutters and windows for
the homebound.
We would like for people to sign up for the project they would like to participate in so leaders have
an idea how many people will be working on a project. However, if you do not sign up ahead of
time, no worries; a project will be found that matches your abilities and interests.
Your service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as
Lutherans: All of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of
life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. God’s Work. Our Hands.
Sunday is an oppor tunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA) – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. You work every day
to make your community a better place. Let’s do this work together!
In Christ, Pastor Audrey
