Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Great natural beauty and two-and-a-half millennia of civilization make Sicily among Europe’smost fascinating destinations. Enjoy a privileged view as we circumnavigate this Mediterranean islandaboard the elegant Sea Cloud II.

Accompanying us is art historian and scholar, Frank Dabell. A former Metropolitan Museumof Art Fellow, Frank is now living and teaching in Rome. Also traveling with us will be Patrick Bowe,architectural historian and author of Gardens of the Roman World.

We begin in Valletta, the capital of Malta, where we embark the awaiting Sea Cloud II and setsail for Syracuse, Sicily. Discover its well-preserved Greek and Roman theaters and visit a baroquepalazzo by special invitation. Sail to Pozzallo for a tour of the 4th-century Villa del Tellaro, with itsartful mosaics. In Porto Empedocle, see the Doric ruins at the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento. FromTrapani, view the Greek temple of Segesta as well as the ancient bronze sculpture, the “Dancing Satyr,”at Mazara del Vallo. Dock in Palermo to explore the 12th-century Palatine Chapel and enjoy a specialpalazzo reception. Conclude in Catania, where an optional postlude is offered in nearby Taormina. Anoptional prelude in Malta is also offered.

Life aboard Sea Cloud II has no comparison. Her friendly staff, luxurious accommodations, andfine dining create an onboard ambiance of relaxed elegance. We will have time at sea to experience thethrill of sailing aboard this three-masted barque.

Frank Dabell, a distinguishedart historian whose specialty isthe Italian Renaissance, has beena frequent lecturer on Travel withthe Met programs, including tripsto Italy, Spain, Croatia, Greece,and North Africa.

Mr. Dabell is the author of dozens of scholarly articles and several books, among them Paintings inthe Vatican, and the forthcoming Piero dellaFrancesca and The Illustrated Vasari. Educated atOxford University and The Courtauld Institute of Artat the University of London, he serves on the art history faculty of Philadelphia’s Temple Universityprogram in Rome—the city where he grew up as theson of a French mother and British father. !

Step ashore this morning in Pozzallo, known for its beautiful beaches. A short drive takes us to the 4th-centuryVilla del Tellaro, where artful mosaics depict huntingscenes and the story of Hector. Continue to the lovelytown of Noto, set amid olive groves and almond trees ona plateau overlooking the Asinaro Valley. A walking tourwill introduce us to the town’s baroque treasures, includingthe Palazzo Nicolaci, whose fabulous interiors rival itswrought-iron balconies supported by carved figures.Return to Sea Cloud II in time for a late lunch.

TRAPANI ! SEGESTA, SICILY Thursday, September 26

Arrive at the port of Trapani and depart on a morningexcursion to Segesta to view its splendid Greek temple andtheater. Following lunch on board, you may wish to driveto the medieval hilltop town of Erice. Alternatively, travelto the village of Mazara del Vallo to see its spectacularseven-foot bronze statue, only recently retrieved from thesea by local fishermen. With his flying hair and goat ears, the 2,400-year-old figure was quickly dubbed the“Dancing Satyr.” In the early evening, Sea Cloud II sailsalong the northern coast of Sicily.

PALERMO ! MONREALE, SICILYFriday, September 27

Dock in Palermo, the capital of Sicily, for a morning visitto the 12th-century Palatine Chapel in the Palace of theNorman Kings. Described by Guy de Maupassant as “the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of,” thechapel is known for its extraordinary golden mosaics. In the Regional Gallerie see Antonello da Messina’s L’Annunziata. After lunch on board, drive to Monreale todiscover the magnificent Norman cathedral, whose brilliantly colored mosaics depict scenes from the Old andNew Testaments. Return to Palermo where we will attenda special reception at Palazzo Gangi by invitation of PrincessCarine Mantegna de Gangi (pending confirmation).

In the Maltese capital of Valletta, tour St. John’s Cathedral—

official home of the Knights of Malta—to see Caravaggio’s The

Beheading of St. John the Baptist. Stroll in the Old Town, a

UNESCO World Heritage Site; visit the Upper Barracca

Gardens, built as a retreat for the Knights; and admire antique

tapestries and suits of armor at the Grandmaster’s Palace.

Continue to Rabat to explore St. Paul’s Catacombs, the earliest

archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta, and view the

remarkable mosaics at Domus Romana, a 2,000-year-old Roman

villa. Explore nearby Mdina, a medieval walled town and Malta’s

historic capital; and discover 5,000-year-old Hagar Qim, one of

the oldest religious sites on earth. Enjoy a private evening

the charming hillside town of Taormina. Discover the remains of

the ancient Greek theater, still used for plays and concerts;

admire the public gardens; browse in the handicraft shops and

galleries along Taormina’s main street; and relax in inviting cafes

and restaurants offering fine Sicilian cuisine. Accommodations

for two nights are at the San Domenico Palace Hotel, an exquisite

former 14th-century monastery.

In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at anytime, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penaltyto AAA or the Met. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants.Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times.The Met and AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant atany time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their ownexpense when such an action is determined by AAA or the Met to be in the best interestof the participant’s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants.CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy tooffset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may includebut are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communi-cation expenses; development/promotional expenses, and the loss of time that mighthave permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing tothe offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. Allrefunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibilityof AAA; the Met shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives writtennotification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellationsreceived between 120 to 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program costper person; 90 and 61 days prior to departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of depar-ture. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or forunused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will beassessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issuedno less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor the Met shall beliable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refund-able ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA willattempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAAreserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in suchcase, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises betweena participant and AAA or the Met, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dis-pute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American ArbitrationAssociation in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law;(c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled underany and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from theparticipant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limi-tation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
