Fax: 815.477-4700 www.optionsandadvocacy.org Options and Advocacy will offer Sibshops once again during the 2011-2012 school year to support families in our community. This is a unique opportunity for the siblings of kids with special needs! Often, we focus mainly on the needs of the individuals with special needs and their parents. What about the brothers and sisters in the family? Sibshops are lively, engaging celebrations of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another — if they are given a chance. Sibshops are a spirited mix of new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range), new friends, and discussion activities. Sibshops are not therapy, although their effect may be therapeutic for some children. Sibshops acknowledge that most brothers and sisters of people with special needs, like their parents, are doing well, despite the challenges of an illness or disability. Consequently, while Sibshop facilitators always keep an eye open for participants who may need additional services, the Sibshop model takes a wellness approach. Who should attend Sibshops? 8-14 year old siblings of kids with special needs. (We will be looking for older siblings to help facilitate Sibshops. Please let us know if your teen is interested!) When will Sibshops be held? The Options and Advocacy Sibshop will be held the third Saturday of each month during the school year (September – May), from 9:00-11:30 am, in Crystal Lake. How do I sign up for Sibshops or get more information? Call to speak to one of us directly, e-mail one of us, or complete and return the form below and we will send you more information . Please contact us to register or with any questions about Sibshops. We’re excited to hear from you! More often than not, the people who in some way have been touched by the incarceration of others are overlooked. Losing a loved one to prison has wide reaching affects across multiple aspects, and affects those involved to varying degrees. These losses have significant impact that may be emotional, psychological, developmental or financial. Yet there are few supports for those in need. Jail Brakers is a diverse grassroots organization that is here to help people of all ages. Whether it is to share your story, provide resources, help, laugh or grieve, please join our community! We meet the first Thursday of every month from 6:30- 8:00 PM at the Unity Spiritual Center of Woodstock.
