The National Press Club is a hosted the National Press Club‟s Network-

ing Forum on 29 January 2014. Members of the Press Club and NLB

representatives were welcomed to the forum by Press Club Chairman,

Mr Joe Charle.

The Press Club brings together role-players in the entire spectrum of the

communications field; from journalists to strategists.

Every month the Club holds a networking forum for their members. The

forums are hosted by various organizations in the private and public sec-

tor. These forums give organizations an opportunity to showcase them-

selves and set the stage for how they are perceived in the media.

CEO’s Corner

Taking it to the streets! That is what young people say, right? I said to you all in my welcome message earlier this year that „the NLB is now firmly in the process of transition and it is my wish that we all move together through the changes, leaving no man behind on our journey of continuous improvement’.

We have so much to look forward to in the coming months; from our flagship event, the Indaba, the continuation of the RFP process and the beginning of the evolution of the NLB after the signing into law of the new Amend-ment Bill. We are changing, and we are growing. And with every change and growth, we must extend the commitment to „leave no man behind‟, to our beneficiaries - current and potential. As well as the public at large. So in that respect, we are surely taking it to the streets! We ended off 2013 by going public with our anti-fraud campaign in several newspaper advertorials, and eased into 2014 by getting on a taxi (see page 9), and hosting the National Press Club at a networking forum o give them a chance to get to know us better and understand our operations.

We have much ahead of us, especially in the month ahead. I believe that we have what it takes within our teams to consolidate our efforts in the most efficient manner so that when we do step out, we put our best foot forward. To repeat once again, words from the wel-come message you all received, „let us march into this new year and the last quar-ter of the financial year with the tenacity and commitment to live up to being the Catalyst for Social Upliftment.‟ Sibahle May we remember to wear the badge of the NLB with pride and dignity. Sibasha As we look back on 15 years of making a difference, may we also renew ourselves through continuous improvement, and em-brace the changes that will take us higher (see page 13). Siyasebenza Diligence in all we do will see us really take it to the streets in a major way, and re-establish our organisation as a grant fun-der of excellence. After the unanticipated delay, the relocation to Block D is back on. This building comes with increased

facilities, which include back-up generators, two lifts and more restrooms. The NLB will also have access to

more parking spaces for staff and guests. Below is the schedule for relocation.

Giving the red card to fraud

In December 2013, we took our No Law Breakers Anti-fraud campaign to the public. Advertorials were published in the Star, The Daily Sun, Sowetan, Daily News (KZN), and Die Beeld. The conviction with which we launched the campaign internally in August 2013, is the same that we aim to bring to the public. The NLB is serious about fraud prevention and detection. These full page ads are just one way in which we are taking it to the streets. We also took the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the legacy of the late former state president, Nelson Mandela by being responsible custodians of the proceeds of the national lottery. Teeing off with the NLB’s own PGA

Well, if this piece does not make the ratings as one of the most riveting pieces you have ever read, I won‟t take exception. Anyway, that is hardly the intention. You see, strong-arming myself to finally pen this long overdue article about golf was akin to attempting to nail jelly to a wall. But one could no longer turn a blind eye on an initiative of great ingenuity aimed at ushering NLB staffers to the golf drive range

and ultimately the golf course. This is precisely what landed me in an unfamiliar but yet an intriguing territory, a territory where there are no goal posts but small holes and where the size of the ball has not only shrunk but also hardened – a territory far away from my beloved soccer.

To the uninitiated, let us find asylum in the words of one of the greatest golfers of the 19th century,

Lloyd Mangrum, whose view on golf perfectly encapsulates what the game is all about. “Golf is the only sport I know of where a player pays for every mistake. A man can muff a serve in tennis, miss a strike in baseball, or throw an incomplete pass in football and still have another chance to square himself. In golf, every swing counts against you.”

Jacobus Prinsloo gave birth to a unique initiative which sought to afford NLB staffers professional golf coaching lessons and free facilities at Tuks Golf Practice Centre and endeared himself to the aspiring golfers in the process. “My vision was, and it is still to share the enjoyment of playing golf out in nature testing your skills and taking on the elements of wind, rain, trees, dams, etc. I got it right to get funding so that everybody at NLB starts with professional coaching and free practice facilities. What a way to start playing this very interesting game”, he enthused.

To help him drive his vision, Cobus has in his corner an equally staunch golf enthusiast who is no stranger to the game in the person of Semakaleng (Queen of the Green). Since Sema was intro-duced to golf at a tender age by her family, she never looked back. She looks up to Nobuhle Dlam-ini who hails from Swaziland and ranks no. 1 in Women‟s league for inspiration. One of the people who seized this opportunity with both hands is the Senior Legal Officer, Phologe Mampuru, who in his short tenure as an amateur golfer learnt that the game is not only entertaining, but it goes further to test your patience and wiliness to develop a certain technical skill to be able to master the game. In response to the widely held perception that golf is an expensive sport, Phologe eloquently put it, “I would like to unequivocally record my resistance to subscribe to the stereotypes that are nourished by uniformed notions which amongst others is that Golf is solely for the elites and for networking pur-pose. A good thing about it is that you can start by buying used apparels and equipment from the fel-low players”. The legal eagle utterly quashed all the excuses about golf equipment being exorbitant.

The Grant Funding executive also refused to be outdone, Jeff du Preez (Makhulu Baas) took to the golf course like a fish into the water. Would it be premature for him to start harbouring ambitions of testing his golf prowess in the events such as Nedbank Golf Challenge in the near future? Well, at the rate he is going, anything is possible. Pardon me for being hopeful that the golf virus will ultimate-ly reach, albeit at a snail‟s pace, endemic proportions looking at the number of people who have made Tuks Golf Practice Centre their secondary domicile. The likes of Chickey, Mziwakhe (Motho ga a lahlwe), Agnes, Millicent, Vuyisa and Mvelisi have made themselves prone to the golf bug much to Cobus‟s contentment.

The contract with HPC (Tuks Golf) for coaching concessions expired in December 2013; however, Cobus has already proactively negotiated for the extension until the end of March 2014. This exten-sion is only for the current NLB Golf Club members. It has always been and it still is Cobus‟ desire to see more colleagues getting involved in the game. To this end, plans are already afoot for a fresh contract which will hopefully see scores of NLB staffers taking up the golf coaching lessons at the beginning of April 2014. In reaffirming his believe in NLB Management to continue throwing their weight behind this initiative, Mr. Prinsloo said, “It is an opportunity for NLB Staff to learn to play golf. I will recommend further funding for other staff members who indicated their interest to play golf”. Seemingly, there is no excuse for anyone not to be able to take that important swing. Let‟s meet on the course, shall we?

Four - Four mas’hlalisane! This is the literally taking NLB to the streets. From January until March 2014, a fleet of taxis across the nine provinces of South Africa will be carrying NLB branding and messaging. We are building awareness of who we are, and how the ordinary man on the street can contribute to being catalysts for social upliftment. A series of „Did you know?‟ questions accompany the messages, answering the questions that we are asked most frequently about our work. On the back of the vehicles are our general contact details.
